Training Workshop and Kit Provide Tips for Teaching ValueStream Mapping

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The nonprofit Lean Enterprise Institute (LEI) will run a
special workshop in Cambridge, MA, to teach company trainers how to best use its comprehensive
value-stream mapping kit, Training to See.
The workshop will run May 21, 2008, at LEIs office at One Cambridge Center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Registration information, workshop details, and faculty descriptions are at the Education page of the
LEI web site at http://www.lean.org/Workshops/ by calling (617) 871-2900, or by emailing
registrar@lean.org. The workshop, which is included in the $2,750 price of the kit, gives trainers
hands-on experience with the Training to See kits materials, which are designed for manufacturing
environments.
The kit includes, among other materials:
A Facilitators Guide for leading value-stream mapping workshops, including tips for having a
successful training session. 20 Participant Guides. A CD-ROM with facilitator slides and forms for
starting and sustaining the lean production transformation. A starter lean library consisting of Lean
Thinking, the Learning to See workbook; and the Lean Lexicon glossary. An 11-by-17-inch ValueStream Mapping Pad with 50 sheets. A value-stream mapping stencil with 32 icons to aid drawing. A
review template to evaluate progress toward the future-state map.
The kit and workshop give trainers the materials and guidance they need to take people through the
value-stream mapping process of selecting a product family, drawing a map of its current state to
identify the root causes of waste, drawing a map of a much leaner future state, and developing a
plan to implement the future state to achieve immediate results.
The kit is based on the proven approach and lessons in Learning to See, LEIs breakthrough
workbook that introduced the value-stream mapping tool.
About Value-Stream Mapping
Value-stream mapping is a fundamental initial step in a lean transformation because it leads to a
better overall flow in an entire process instead of isolated improvements to a single point in a
process. As a result, mapping creates a blueprint for applying other tools and running kaizen events.
It also helps people see beyond the symptoms of waste to the root causes so they can make more
substantial and sustainable improvements.
