Indian-origin filmmaker fights battle against female foeticide in India

UNTIL recently Indian-origin
filmmaker Nyantara Pais Caputi
was perhaps best known for her
short film ‘Desi Confused By
America’ (DCBA). But with
simultaneous walks organized in
various parts of the world on
March 6 to protest against
foeticide, Nyna has also emerged
as a champion of the female child’s
right to live. Married to filmmaker
Gino Caputi, Nyna is currently
working on a documentary film,
‘Petals in the Dust: India’s Missing
Girls’, on female infanticide in
India. The film, expected to be a
powerful commentary on the issue
and government’s apathy towards
it, will likely be completed by
2012.
‘Petals in the Dust’ was inspired
by the Caputis’ own attempts at
adopting a girl child from India
recently. “I was told I would have
at least a two- to three-year wait for
a baby girl. I was surprised to learn
that there were long waiting lists of
families wanting to adopt girls
from India,” she said. “Then the
orphanage that I visited in India
pointed a lake out to me in the
vicinity where baby girls used to
be drowned by their parents.”
Originally hailing from
Bangalore, Nyna now lives in the
San Francisco Bay Area with her
husband Gino Caputi and four-
year-old son Dante Taran Anthony.

When and how did the idea to
have a walk protesting female
infanticide in India materialize?
After I started work on our
documentary film, ‘Petals In The
Dust: India’s Missing Girls’. The
stories the women I interviewed
shared with me made me realize I
needed to do everything that I
could possibly do to create
awareness and bring about change.
How did you manage to rope
in other organizations to have
the walk across countries on the
same day?
I reached out to some non-
profits like Fight-Back in Mumbai
that is fighting female among
other issues and the Pink Pagoda
run by Dr. James Garrow, that has
been involved in saving over
31,000 babies in China from the
one-child policy. I also posted on
the Facebook page of the Walk for
India’s Missing Girls that I was
looking to organize the walk all
over the world. The other NGOs
and women approached me. In
Australia, we have a woman of
Indian origin, who has been
nominated for the Mrs. Australia

What did you set out to
achieve through the walk? What
do you think has been achieved

There were several things that I
wanted to achieve. I wanted
women in India to realize that they
are not alone and people from all
over the world would join hands to
help them fight for the lives of their

year, let us ask ourselves one
question, what will we do with
Jesus Christ? Easter is a wonderful
time of year. For many it's the birth
of new life as the spring season is
upon us. And for many millions of
people, it's the time when they
celebrate the death and
resurrection of the Lord Jesus
Christ. What does Easter mean to
you?
What shall I do then with Jesus
which is called Christ? (Matt
27:22)
One very important thing about
the Holy Bible, which is the
inspired word of the Living God, is
that the Bible always asks
questions of those that read it, of
those that hear it preached, spoken,
and taught. The God of the Bible is
also the God of the whole earth.
The whole of humanity, past,
present, and to come would all one
day have to stand before Him and
give a personal account of all that
had been done, and this of course
would include you dear reader.
The Bible gives to the whole of
humankind the salvation message
from the Creator of all, to all who
would accept it in faith. Now is the
time of year that Christians all over
the world celebrate what God had
done for them all, and this is an
open opportunity for you to accept
what God has also done for you.

He tried to get Jesus off his hands,
but he could not, and neither can
we.
We must all accept Him, or
reject Him, and all those who does
not accept Him, reject Him by that
very act, there are no in-betweens.
We all have the question to
answer, either this side of
judgement, where we find mercy,
grace and the love of God, or on
the other side of judgement when
we stand before the Creator God,
where the question is asked, 'What
did you do with My Son?'
Now I mentioned before that in
the Bible characters we would see
a reflection of ourselves through
the way that they lived and acted,
let me try and show this through
the actions of Pontius Pilate.
Pilate knew that Jesus had done
nothing wrong, and also knew that
Jesus had been brought before him
because of the envy of the Jews
(religious leaders). And so even
today we see so many religious
leaders and followers reject Jesus
and would put obstacles and
barriers in the way to stop people
going to Jesus.
Pilate ruled over a turbulent and
jealous people, and because of this
he wanted to appease the people
and so went along with popular
opinion. How many people would
want to appease family, friends,
traditions, and would just go along
with what they are accustomed to,
to follow a lifestyle that is godless,
or maybe religious, but not follow
the Christ.

innocent man, but was also willing

place in Mysore city,” Saldanha
