Regarding quality
extremely pleased with Beldens products Belden
offers the best product for the least cost.
Regarding capabilities
We had a problem with the boots on the universal joint
assemblies from our previous supplier. Belden
engineers came here to meet with our engineers to
resolve the problem and redesign the parts. The boot
redesign was included on our assemblies within days.
We have had no problems since.
Regarding delivery
the delivery time has been reduced since I first
started doing business with Belden. Belden
prepared themselves by stocking many of our
frequently ordered parts.
Regarding delivery
Belden cut their delivery in half by planning for
our orders and stocking components in
anticipation of our next release.
Regarding capabilities
We now buy other components from Belden. A Belden
Sales Rep came to our facilities to look at how we were
operating our equipment. She took back part samples
back to your [Beldens] engineering department. They
suggested some changes and offered to make the parts
for less than we were getting them before. Were
getting a superior assembly thats cost effective.

A high-quality Belden double universal joint provides the same reliability and service life as
the Belden single universal joint with a maximum working angle of 70. Double universal
joints provide accurate positioning and flexible action under difficult operating angles.
Operating angles up to 70
Uniform speed ratio between driving and
driven shafts
With Belden double universal joints, higher torque can be transmitted at greater angles
than with conventional flexible couplings where parallel misalignment occurs. Belden
double universal joints are available in the same wide variety of materials and finishes as
the single universal joint. Lubricant retaining flexible boots are recommended for operation
in corrosive environments. See page 8 for hub configurations available.

Belden design engineers can specify a universal joint assembly to meet most unique
requirements. In addition to the high-quality alloy steel standard of Belden universal joints,
assemblies made from alternate materials with a wide selection of end hubs and finishes
are available. Beldens capabilities allow us to provide a precise, reliable, and durable
universal joint suited for many applications in most environments.
The applications for Belden custom double universal joints are endless, and limited
only by the imagination, because they are found in everything from aircraft to packaging
machinery.
The majority of Belden's universal joints are custom designed and manufactured, therefore,
a wide variety of end hub configurations are offered. The five conventional hub types, in
either male or female, are available in metric or inch sizes. Solid hubs are also available.

A quick-change feature is available on our custom double universal joint, which allows
the universal joint to be quickly removed and replaced without tools. This is an important
feature when machine downtime is crucial. The quick-change universal joint consists of
two back-to-back single universal joints connected with a spring loaded intermediate
shaft. Pinning of outer yokes is not required because the spring tension on the
intermediate shaft holds the quick-change universal joint secure at each end.
Engineering
The engineers at Belden are disciplined in all
aspects of power transmission components and
employ sophisticated CAD technology to develop
conceptual, assembly and detail drawings
required for each customers application.
Many of Belden's custom made products go through several design changes before a
final design is approved. Belden can eliminate the time and sample cost by providing
rapid prototype service. Your 3-D digital concepts can be converted to physical
concept models in less than a day. Your concept models can achieve unprecedented
levels of idea transfer during progress meetings.
Unique non-toxic base materials can be infused with wax to allow for investment
casting or with resins to generate sturdy concept models.
Belden military standard universal joints are precisely designed and manufactured for a
variety of applications. These include specifications where low deflection rates, high
strength-to-weight ratios and long service life are essential.

If the universal joint assembly is going to operate in an atmosphere that is polluted with
chips, dirt, acids and/or other abrasives, it is highly recommended that flexible boots be
specified on the original assembly. These boots play an important role in protecting the
joint and keeping it fully lubricated. Proper lubrication will prolong the useful life of an
assembly by a factor of as much as five.

At Belden, forged universal joints are available to those customers requiring a universal
joint of uncommon quality at an affordable price. Belden initially developed this universal
joint in response to a customers request. We have expanded our line to include various
sizes of forged universal joints commonly sold through the automotive market.
12
The forged cross and bearing style universal joint is the industry standard in steering.
Other uses typical for this style of universal joint are agriculture steering and linkages,

Steel Leveling/Straightening
Belden supplies high strength universal joints to many manufacturers of varied steel
processing equipment, including sheet steel leveling and straightening machines. Belden
has answered the demands of this industry by providing specially designed universal joints
to handle the greater torque conditions of this application.
20
Beldens special leveling universal joint starts as high strength alloy steel. Next, Belden
engineers enlarged the profile on the connecting end of the universal joint, which
dramatically increased the strength of the universal joint. This allows our leveling universal
joint to greatly exceed the torque capacity of standard universal joints.
Beldens professional team worked with machine builders to create a better universal joint
for the steel processing industry.
Rollforming
Beldens universal joints have also proven successful in the steel processing specialty of
rollforming. Beldens special rollforming universal joint is similar in design to our high
strength leveling universal joint, for it handles the tough conditions of the machinery used
in rollforming. The rollforming universal joint also out performs other universal joint
manufacturers products in such conditions.
As on our leveling universal joint, Belden has expanded the torque capacity of the universal
joint by making design changes to the profile of the universal joint and upgrading the
material. The basic function of the universal joint remains the same, but the mechanical
properties are augmented. Engineering advantage and cost savings will be realized if you
choose Beldens rollforming universal joint for your rollforming original equipment.
Screw Machines
Beldens universal joints are found in many types of machine tools, because the function
of the universal joint makes it an integral component of machine design. The design of
various CNC screw machines includes universal joints that are required to run at a high
RPM, while retaining a precise linkage, ie., low backlash and near constant velocity.
Minimal backlash
Continuous operation
21
Beldens universal joints combine proven technology with engineering finesse to meet
the demands of this application. A specially designed needle bearing universal joint
effortlessly endures the extreme RPM with negligible backlash, providing a precise and
durable connection. Belden can custom design a solution to your most severe machine
tool application, so promptly forward your specifications to our experienced professionals
for assistance.
Belden Inc. was originally founded as a manufacturer of multiple spindle drill and tap
machines, so our expertise in this area is unparalleled. As the industry leader, Belden is
consistently designing new and innovative products for this enduring and flourishing
market to eliminate the common problems machine tool manufacturers encounter.
Beldens universal joints are designed for increasing length of operation and facilitating
quick installation, both of which decrease down time. Our universal joints are affordable,
precise, and delivered when required due to our stocking programs and just in time
deliveries. Let Beldens 30 plus years of experience in this industry help you to
overcome cost, design and delivery obstacles.
Conveying + Packaging
Beldens products within the conveying and packaging group are each unique to the
OEMs specifications, but regularly, Belden suggests alternatives to improve upon the
product and lower the overall cost of the universal joint. The universal joints supplied to
these manufacturers typically include value added features to our already outstanding
universal joints.
Belden offers design enhancements such as boot covers, material upgrades, alternate
finishes, quick change features and various universal joint style options that increase the
value of our universal joints. Beldens universal joints are always custom manufactured to
surpass our customers requirements. We work with our clients and offer products they
are proud to include on their original equipment.
Medical Equipment
OEMs typically challenge Belden with the following criteria: provide quality universal
joints on a narrow, pre-determined schedule at a cost within their budget restrictions.
MRI manufacturers added specifications particular to their industry: a finished, ready to
install, surface corrosion resistant universal joint assembly that could handle a large
angle of operation.
22
Beldens team of professionals worked with the OEM, and responded to their terms with
a double universal joint assembly complete with shafting and a corrosion resistant finish.
The double universal joint assembly allowed for the large angle of operation and the surface
was black oxided to insure resistance to surface corrosion. Belden also provided the
shafting, so that the product was ready to install, meeting all the customers specifications.
Electronics
Belden universal joints can handle the harshest environments and the application within
the electronics field is proof. A manufacturer of circuit boards included in their machine
design a universal joint to be cyclically dipped into 600 degrees F molten solder, and
they came to Belden for assistance.
23
The Belden team answered their challenge by proposing a stainless steel and silicone
booted universal joint. Both the materials of stainless steel and silicone operate under
the high temperatures and corrosive conditions. The boot also prolonged the operating
life of the universal joint. Beldens material suggestions proved to prevail over the harsh
environment, and today, Belden still enjoys being their singular universal joint supplier.
Aerospace
The world's manufacturers rely on Belden's universal joints for their most intricate power
transmitting functions. Beldens capabilities bring even the most difficult universal joint
applications within reach, as in the case of an aerospace companys request for a
universal joint that was to be installed as a bleed valve actuator on a 737 jet engine.
The customers specifications called for the material to be a specialty alloy, and also
included a special heat treat and separate plating process. Our customer met with
Beldens manufacturing professionals to first hand communicate their requirements and to
inspect our manufacturing facility and processes. Belden delivered the parts on time and
completely per customers specifications proving that Beldens team approach and
knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes suits all universal joint applications.

Couplings
special requirements.
Zero backlash
The B series of couplings has a cut pattern consisting of two sets of two cuts. Each set of
cuts has two beams that overlap each other, much like a thread that has multiple starts.
These beams are slightly shorter in rotational length than those of the C series. This gives
the coupling higher torsional stiffness (lower windup) for greater accuracy. In general,
these beams are thicker than those in a C series coupling of an equal outside diameter,
this gives the coupling greater torque capacity. Due to the thicker beams and the shorter
length these couplings sacrifice some flexibility to obtain the greater performance.

Oldham Couplings
A robust, three part coupler rated for intermittent operation, the Belden Oldham coupling
has zero backlash, high torsional stiffness and offers easy connection of drivers in blind or
difficult installations. The Oldham coupling is widely used for motion control, typically in
positioning tables, fluid delivery systems, and similar applications.
Electrically isolating
Flex-free mechanical action-low
bearing loads
28
A key feature of the Oldham concept is the exceptional, flex-free, radial misalignment
capability it provides. As there are no restoring forces, bearing loads are low. Its operation
should not be confused with the jaw coupler which works on different principles.

Soft Flex Couplings are three piece couplings consisting of two zinc alloy hubs and a soft
plastic multi-tooth sleeve. With each of the two hubs mounted with set screws onto to the
driver shaft and the other to the driven shaft, the soft plastic transmits torque across the
hubs through sheer connection. The sheer connection compensates for angular and
parallel shaft misalignment providing protection from vibration and shock loads, and
provides electrical insulation. These couplings are easy to install and maintenance free.

Bellow Coupling:
31
Belden Bellow Couplings have excellent kinematic properties and torsional stiffness of a
very high order. They are suitable for servo drives and satisfy the criteria for highly dynamic
position and velocity control systems. The flexible mid-section provides complete
absorption of angular and parallel misalignment, and end play while maintaining uniform
rotational speed.

Disk Coupling
A Belden Disk Coupling is a uni-body type that provides an extensive twisting hardness
and prominent mobility. Belden Disk Couplings are high precision couplings that meet
lifetime longevity. It allows uni- or bi- directional rotation up to 20,000 rpm. The major
applications are high speed movement control systems, critical loads, dynamo meters,
precision encoders and so forth.

Terminology
Belden Incorporated
Universal Joint
A mechanical device that can transmit torque and/or rotary motion from one shaft to
another at fixed or varying angles of intersection of the shafts axis.
Also know as the Cardan or Hooke joint, the pin and block is the simplest unit
available. It allows for a more positive transmission of rotating power or torque than
conventional flexible couplings.
A forged cross with a needle bearing connection provides minimal backlash and
precise positioning without compromising torque capacity.
Needle bearings are installed at the pin ends to reduce backlash and increase
precision and RPM capability.
Torque
Torque is the force that causes rotation. Operating torque is the amount of torque
that is transmitted during normal operation. Torque is commonly expressed in poundinches (lb-in), pound-feet (lb-ft), or Newton-meters (Nm).
Multiply pound-inch (lb-in) x .112985 for Newton-meters (Nm).
Multiply pound-feet (lb-ft) x 1.35582 for Newton-meters (Nm).
Torque can be calculated using the following formula:
Torque (lb-in) = Horsepower (h.p.) x 63024
rpm
Axial Misalignment
Axial misalignment is the amount of axial movement (end play) between the shafts,
which is typically caused by motor vibration. Axial misalignment is measured in
length units.

Parallel Offset
Parallel offset is the parallel distance between shafts, and is measured in length units.
Torsional Stiffness
Angular Misalignment
Zero backlash refers to the amount of side to side play within a coupling assembly.
