INTRODUCTION

In this documentation, a theoretical construct of a community is intended to be

designed for a power distribution system.
The locality presented would be a setting of an urbanized area, consisted of About
200 residents, situated in various planned locations. Commercial establishments outlined
are set ideally for a typical community needs and are zoned so as to provide a maximal
accessibility for the residents. Distinct favorable locations are also made intended for
industrial buildings and establishments in a way as to avoid any possible adverse impact on
the residents congenial living.
Local geography of the project area is established as a plane flat landmass,
measuring approximately 185 hectares and is surrounded by other various cities.
Herewith, this documentation proposes the specification of the requirements needed
for the Hacienda Heights Village power distribution project.

SECONDARY DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM

CAPACITY OF THE DISTRIBUTION TRANSFORMER
Calculations in this section are done through Demand Factor Method. Listed below
are the typical home appliances loads and their respective power ratings.
Typical Electrical Loads:
Water Heater 4,500 watts
Range / Oven 8,000 watts
Central Air Conditioner 6,000 watts
Clothes Dryer 5,000 watts
Dishwasher 2,000 watts
Lighting, Fans, Appliances, Other 7,500 watts

Overall rating sums up to 33,000 watts or 33KW. Peak power demand rating of each
resident in Hacienda Heights Village averages to about 20,000 watts or 20 KW. Hence,
computing for the demand factor yields;
20 KW
D.F =

= 0.606
33 KW

For transformer T11p that supplies 4 residential buildings, MVA rating is calculated;
33,000 watts X 4 = 132,000 watts
At 0.606 demand factor; 132,000 watts X 0.606 = 79,992 watts or 80 KW
79,992
Applying a power factor of 0.8 yields; VA=
= 94,108 VA
0.85
Or 94,108 VA Single Phase
For transformer T21p that supplies 3 residential buildings, MVA rating is calculated;

33,000 watts X 3 = 99,000 watts

At 0.606 demand factor; 99,000 watts X 0.606 = 59,994 watts or 60 KW
59,994
Applying a power factor of 0.85 yields; VA=
= 70,581 VA Single Phase
0.85

For transformer T31p and T41p, similar calculation as with T11p is employed and thus yields
94,108 KVA; single phase is the requirement for both transformers.

For transformer T51p that supplies a police station, fire station, casino, three social bars and
two convenient stores, load computation are as follows;
For police station and fire station of 250 square foot area and yields 7.7 watts per
square foot as set by NEC, 250 X 7.7 = 1925 Watts

Casino consumes 7.6 watts per square foot and has a floor area of 600 square foot.
600 X 7.6 = 4560 Watts

Social Bars are set to have an average power consumption of 27.3 watts ore square
foot and has a floor area of 500 square foot. 500 X 27.3 X 3 bars = 40, 950 Watts

Convenient Stores which has a total area of 500 square foot and consumes 13.0
watts per square foot; 500 X 13 X 2 stores = 13,000 Watts

Total power consumed by the said establishments connected together yields;

1,925 + 4,560+ 40,950 +13,000 = 60, 435 Watts.
0.8 demand factor and 0.85 power factor applied results to 56,880 VA

For transformer T61p that supplies two commercial banks and a fast-food restaurant, load
computation is as follows;
A commercial bank having a floor area of 1500 square foot floor area and is set to
consume 9.2 Watts per square foot; 1500 X 9.2 = 13,800watts X 2 banks = 27,600
watts

A fast food restaurant having a 1,500 square foot floor area is set to consume 27.3
watts per square foot. Total power consumption will be;
1500 X 27.3 = 40,950 watts

The establishments being connected to a single transformer yields;

27,600 + 40,950 = 68,550 watts Demand factor value of 0.8 and Power factor of
0.85 will give a 64,517 VA

Transformer T13p supplies a city office for which NEC implements 7.7 watts per square foot
estimate value for commercial transformer loadings. City hall land area measures 4,860
square foot, which yields a power consumption of;
4,860 X 7.7 = 37,422 Watts or 37.42 KW
NEC sets a 0.8 value for demand factor; 37,442 X 0.8 = 29,953 Watts
For 0.85 p f; 29,953 / 0.85 = 35,239 VA, 3 phase

Transformer T23p supplies a grocery store. NEC implements 10.1 watts per square foot
estimate value for commercial transformer loadings for such establishment. Grocery Store
floor area measures 7,290 square foot, which yields a power consumption of;
7,290 X 10.1 = 73,629 W
0.7 demand factor yields; 73, 629 X 0.7 = 51,540 Watts
0.85 p f; 51,540 / 0.85 = 60,635 VA, 3 phase

Transformer T33p supplies a church.9.7 watts per square foot is the estimated value for
commercial transformer loadings for such establishment. Church floor area measures 8,500
square foot, which yields a power consumption of;
8,500 X 9.7 = 82,450 W
0.8 demand factor yields; 73, 629 X 0.7 = 65,960 Watts
0.85 p f; 65,960 / 0.85 = 77,600 VA, 3 phase

commercial transformer loadings for such establishment. For a sports field that measures
35,000 square foot, power consumption yields;
35,000 X 7.7 = 269,500 W
0.7 demand factor yields; 269,500 X 0.7 = 188,650 Watts
0.85 p f; 188,650 /0.85 = 221,941 VA, 3 phase
Transformer T53p supplies a school. 10.2 watts per square foot is the estimate value for
transformer loading requirement. For an academy that measures 18,500 square foot, power
consumption yields;

18,500 X 10.2 = 188,700 W

0.8 demand factor yields; 188,700 X 0.8 = 150,960 Watts
0.85 p f; 150,960 /0.85 = 177,600 VA, 3 phase

Transformer T63p supplies a central mall. 13.0 watts per square foot is the estimate value for
transformer loading requirement. For a central mall that measures 25,500 square foot,
power consumption yields;
