Front Cover: Light blue and white is used on the front cover of Billboard magazine. Light blue connotates purity,
cleanliness and culturally based interpretations. Light blue is a very calm colour and bright, this stands out to the
audience and draws their attention. However, light blue can also connotate sadness and melancholy. This
mixture of colour communicates a mixture of thoughts and emotion to the audience. This is appealing to
the target audience, as they can Identify with these emotions. This is an example of the uses and
gratifications theory, which explains that an audience consumes a text because they can identify
with characters, places and themes/emotions. Sans serif typography is used for masthead. This
typography connotates strength and masculinity. Sans serif typography is effective as it is
bold, stands out to the audience, which compels them to consume the text. Conventions
are broken in the design of this magazine. The masthead is down the side of the cover.
This is effective, as the layout is associated with this magazine and, in a way, can be
seen as a logo. This is recognisable and appealing to the target audience. The
star on the front cover is looking up. The lack of direct address is effective, as
it creates an enigma to an active audience, wondering what hes looking
at. This magazine also breaks conventions, as it is very minimalistic.
There are only a few cover lines and a buzz word is used, that says
The Weekend. This is used to stand out to the audience and
draw their attention. This is appealing to the target audience,
as some connotations of the weekend are; partying,
relaxation, freedom and fun. This compels the
audience to consume the text, as it suggests the
genre of music is pop, as popular music is often
used when partying. A pull quote is also used.
It says The pop-star life is a new challenge.
This is effective as it makes the text
more interesting and compels the
audience to consume the text.
Billboard Magazine is published
by John J Kilcullen. Although this
cover breaks conventions, it appeals
to the target audience, as these
broken conventions are associated with
this magazine and the audience can
recognise it. The colour scheme is polysemic
and connotate emotions that the audience can
identify with. I feel that this cover is effective at
appealing to its audience using broken conventions.
There are a
mixture of colours used on
this double page spread. This
Connotates a mixture of emotions
and opinions. Different sections
of texts are highlighted and are multicoloured. This is used to draw the audiences
attention and/or anchor text to The appropriate
image. The use of cartoons is effective. They
enhance the colour scheme and links the two pages.
Cartoons have the connotation of childhood and suggests
that the magazine is aimed at a young, but mature audience.
The images, used on this double page spread, are of artists and
bands. Celebrity endorsement is effective in music magazines as
they act as opinion leaders and compel the audience to consume the
text. An audience is more likely to read a text, if it involves and artist they
know and/or trust. In most of the images, the artists are giving the audience
eye contact. This form of direct address is effective, as it involves the audience
and draws them in. Certain words in the text are highlighted, this is used to
interest the audience and draw them to different sub-topics of the text. Pull
quotes are also used, these are used to break up the text, compel the audience
and draw them to that page. Product placement is also used. This is effective
as it allows the audience to use a different media platform. This targets a wider
audience. This is an example of audience segmentation, which explains that
you can segment/target a wider audience through the media platforms your
product is available on. Informal language is used on this double page spread.
This appeals to the target audience and suggests that the magazine is aimed
at young adults. I feel that the use of colour is effective, as it stands out to the
audience and compels them to consume the text.
ROLLING STONE
Front Cover: Red, white and black are used for the colour scheme for this front cover. Red has connotations of
strength, power, determination and love. This is effective as it links to the star, Adele, as her songs tend to be
about these things. This is appealing to the target audience. White is considered the colour of perfection, it
connotates innocence, purity, goodness and light. Black connotates power, elegance and formality. This
sets up a positive representation of Adele, which the audience can identify with and compels the
audience to consume the text. This is an example of identification in the uses and gratifications
theory, which explains that an audience consumes a text because they can identify with ideologies,
characters and/or locations. Serif typography is used for the masthead on this front cover.
This has feminine connotations and appeals to a female audience. The colour red is
effective as it stands out to the audience and draws their attention. The main cover line
is black on white and also stands out to the audience. This front cover breaks
conventions, as the cover lines are on the right hand side of the page. This is
effective as this can be seen as iconography of the text and will be recognisable
to the audience. There are lines under each cover line to makes the text easy
to understand. This is an example of transparency in the utopian theory.
On the front cover, Adele is wearing a dressing gown, no make up
with wet hair. The fact that she is not wearing make-up makes
her a positive role model for younger women by promoting
ideologies about natural beauty. These ideologies are
effective, as Adele is the opinion leader and compels the
audience to consume the text. This is an example
of two step theory, which explains that an
audience consumes a text because they
trust the star (opinion leader) and
unquestioningly consume. The
picture of Adele looks as though
she has just washed (been in
the shower). This is identifiable
to the audience, therefore compels
them. The cover lines suggest that
a lot of the content is about artists. For
example one says The Weeknd SEX,
DRUGS AND R&B. Formal language in used
on this cover. This suggests that this text is
aimed at a mature audience and this is
appealing to them. This text is published by Jann
Wenner.
Contents Page:
The use of primary
colours; red and green, stand
out to the audience and draw
their attention. Red connotates
strength, energy and power. This sets
up a positive representation to the
audience and is appealing to them. Green is
a calm colour on the eyes and connotates peace.
The contrast between the green bushes and the
in white clothing, makes the star stand out and compels
the audience to consume the text. The use of black and
white photography is effective as it sets up the connotation
of unity and all the star in the image being on the level and equal
to each other. Black connotates formality and power. Bold, red, sans
serif typography is used to section the Contents. Black typography is
used for the title of each story and a Smaller font is used for the anchor text
for each story. The use of font size Is effective as it organises the page. This is
effective as it is clear to the what the stories are and what they are about. This is
an example of transparency in the utopian theory, which explains that an audience
consumes a text because it is easy to understand. The images used on this contents
page are of stars, who of different age ranges. This targets a wider audience and appeals to
them. The middle image of the man standing in white clothing is standing with his hands by
his side. The represents him as confident. There is also an image of a woman singing. The caption
says Grimes releases her new album, Art Angels, last month. This is effective as it gives the audience
Information about an artist, which compels them to consume the text. Formal language is used in this
text, this is effective as it suggests the the text is aimed at an older audience and this appeals to them. In
the features section, the first two stories are about popular artists; Adele and The Weeknd. This layout is effective,
as it is said that an audience reads a page in the z formation, which means that they would see the artists names.
If they are familiar with these artists, this will compel them to consume the text. This is an example of a demographic
Audience, based on preference. This suggests that this text features in pop artists, as well as rock & roll. This targets
a wider audience and compels them to consume the text. I think this contents pages use of conventions is effective as
it organises the page and makes it easy to read. The use of colour draws the audiences attention and compels them to consume
the text. The use of star images target a wider audience based on preference and creates a sense of community/fandom. This is
an example of community in the utopian theory, which explains that an audience consumes a text to feel part of a community.
