Although the motor car is not yet 100 years old,


two centuries have passed since the beginning of the machine
age. Mankind now approaches the last quarter of the twentieth
century and is taking part in a second technical revolution of a
magnitude and momentum undreamed of only twenty years ago.
The computer is now a fact of life. Electronics, chemistry
and space travel are developing at a fantastic pace. 9ur fut~re
will be influenced by a new concept - "absolute engmeerm~ :-engineering which is independent and self-controlled. Thi~ is
sophisticated engineering, benefitting from the latest technical
aids with which to ease mankind's workload. To leave man free to
do all the things that only he can do - to investigate, to research,
to make decisions, to live. This is the new aim of mankind.
This new age, in which old-fashioned ideas are gradually
being swept aside, in which man is now beginning to explore
infmite space, is typified more by the car than anything else. And
a dream has become reality - a dream of a technically perfect car
which, by the very fact of its existence, sets merciless new standards.
This car challenges all others - even those of its own marque.
It is not a celebrity, because celebrities may themselves go out
of style, it is a pioneer, a car for the future. It has no ancestor.
The Mercedes-Benz 600 symbolises the future, a future
which is attainable today. Its automatic, electronic and hydraulic
operation makes it decades ahead of its time, yet it is here - now.
Scientists and engineers are rightly proud of the 600. Their
pride stems from having been present at the birth of a new
element in automobile design. This element was the complete
creative freedom Daimler-Benz AG gave to its designers freed om to start afresh taking account of the best lessons of the
past but owing nothing to previous production items. For more
than six years all their talent and imagination was devoted to
producing one car, a car which would show the way to the future.
A car which could incorporate all their ingenuity and skill. They
gave it a wealth of automatic, hydraulic and electronic equipment,
yet where orthodox, rather conservative components were found
to be the best, these were retained. The steering wheel, for
example was examined in the light of recent research to see
whether 'something better might not be available. In the event
the wheel was retained, but in its fmal form even this had become
a sophisticated piece of engineering.
The Mercedes-Benz 600 is the only expensive car which has
become exclusive by virtue of its performance rather than its price.
There are cars which are even more expensive. The MercedesBenz 600 is not a car to be bought merely for show, however,
and those who do so may not be absolutely satisfied with it.

But someone who needs both the most comfortable and


the most modern car currently available, and incidentally wants
to make a contribution towards progress, will find what he
wants in the Mercedes-Benz 600.
The owner of a car such as this aligns himself with the
opinions expressed in its design.
For this car stands apart from the rest, all too often examples
of grandiose opulence in ':Vhich vast areas ~f sheet metal cover
little in the way of technical and mecharucal refmement. The
person who calculates greatness by the foot does not assess this
car fairly.
Those who say "It should be even more expensive, since
then it would attract even more attention" are also out of
sympathy with the ideals the car represents.

The Mercedes-Benz 600 is a quiet, powerful car. Its superior
performance is a hard fact, one which sets new standards.
Take a look inside. Everything you expect is there, but is
unexpectedly different. There is no ~ngine nois.e. Seat~ .are
moved hydraulically (therefore silently) mto the desrred po~1t1on.
The luggage compartment lid opens and .closes automatically,
the radio aerial retracts. The temperature is controlled. The car
is raised or lowered to the appropriate height according ~o the
load or other needs. And if the driver wishes to amuse himself
between business decisions, all that is required is slight pressure
of the right foot to show a sports car who's the boss.
You can sleep in this car, you can rule from i~ - some do.
You can make serious decisions or take your fishing tackle to
your favourite lake. The car puts .other road traf~c at a di~tance
from you. It provides the best m. comfort, while ?ffermg an
opportunity to get the utmost enjoyment from dr1vmg. A~ a
time when man is busy exploring space, we feel we are domg
something for the traveller here on earth.

A slight tum of the paddec;l steering-wheel centre plate enables

turned back to lock the wheel again.
The shock absorbers can be set either hard for high speed
driving or soft for comfort at lower speeds.

The height of the complete car can also be varied to give extra
ground clearance.

The standard summer ventilation panel beneath the instrument

The optional air conditioning system is efficient even when the
outside temperature is very high.

ball type nozzles,
which are adjustable
in all directions.

All seats are anatomically contoured. Seat springs are of varying


depth and are tuned to match the car's suspension at all speeds.
No tiring vibrations are transmitted to the occupants, however
far the car is driven.

Safety: Impact energy absorbing body sections, front and rear,


rigid passenger compartment (safety cell) in which all parts which
may come into contact with the body in an accident are either
padded, rounded or collapsible. For example, the instrument panel
is designed to yield progressively in stages. The steering column
will not impale the driver, there is a large padded centre plate
on the steering wheel with a buffer cup under the plate. Telescopic steering column and many other features. The safety principles are standard to Mercedes-Benz and there are none more
stringent.

There is a time switch on the courtesy lights, they go out


automatically, ten seconds after the door is closed. Four cigar
lighters are fitted, also a thermometer on the instrument panel
which gives the outside temperature. These features are standard
equipment.
Purchasers may specify extra lamps, a fifth cigar lighter, a
centre partition, tables, telephone, a bar, different seating or a
larger interior.
Although the Mercedes-Benz 600 is assembled on a production line - a special one - it is made almost entirely by hand.
Cars are made only to order. So special requests can often be met,
even if they are not shown in our specification. Sometimes even
very unusual requests. If someone really wanted to, they could
have bright green upholstery with pink rugs.
There is one aspect though, in which we will not deviate.
We will not alter the design in ways which will impair the
safety factors. In this we are sure that manufacturer and owners
agree. Changes in body-styling are also out of the question.

Naturally, the Mercedes-Benz is a car which is often used


on occasions where prestige is important. For those who require
it, a limousine version is available, with a rear compartment 30
inches longer than in the standard saloon.
Seats in the .rear compartment can be fitted "vis-a-vis" or
in two rows one behind the other. There are also further types
of seating arrangements available on request.
The master craftsmen entrusted with the manufacture and
assembly of the Mercedes-Benz 600 have acquired such a high
degree of skill, knowledge and experience that every car is a
masterpiece, in all senses of the word.
There is only one aspect of their knowledge which is not
revealed, the names of the customers.

The key of the Mercedes-Benz 600 looks different to other


car keys.
And when it is put into the lock of the driver's door and
turned, the other doors are also unlocked.
Conversely, when the driver's door is locked, the other doors
are also locked.
The locks on the boot and fuel tank are incorporated in the
same mechanism.
This system illustrates two points, first that modern engineering can be amusing as well as clever, second that the key to
a Mercedes-Benz 600 is more than just the key to a car. It is the
key to new, refreshing, powerful, silent and splendid means of
transportation.
It is engineering developments such as those in the
Mercedes-Benz which assure a bright future for the motor car.

Sono trascorsi meno di due secoli dall'il1izio dell'era delle


macchine, !'automobile non ha ancora cento anni, e gia noi viviamo, in questo ultimo terzo del secolo XX, la seconda rivoluzione
tecnica, di una forza e di una portata tali che ancora 20 anni fa
nessuno avrebbe potuto neppure irnmaginare.
II computer e divenuto indispensabile. Elettro11ica, chimica
ed astronautica danno w1 decisivo impulso a questo sviluppo.
Al nostro futuro si apre una dimensione totalmente nuova: ,,la
tecnica autostabile" che controlla se stessa e opera automaticamente per mantenersi in azione. Essa e ormai perfetta e munita di
ogni mezzo atto a sollevare l'uomo; renderci liberi di dedicarci a
cio che solo l'uomo puo fare, questo e il suo nuovo traguardo:
liberi di interrogare, di ricercare, di decidere, di vivere.
A questa Epoca, che va lentamente sacrificando un' antica
visione del mondo e volge ormai il Suo cammino allo spazio

Liberta creativa e stata concessa dalla Mercedes-Benz ai suoi
progettisti. Per piu di sei anni essi hanno lavorato con tutte le loro
capacita e la loro libera volon ta ad un modello destinato a far
entrare !'automobile nel futuro. Essi hanno dato alla MercedesBenz 600 il meglio di cui fossero capaci. Le hanno dato qualcosa
come ventimila Marchi di automatismi, apparecchiature idrauliche ed elettroniche, e le hanno dato pure quel volante un poco
all'antica, di gusto chiaramente conservatore (che peraltro si rivela
un perfezionato volante di sicurezza e puo essere registrato persino in altezza).
La Mercedes-Benz 600 el'unica traleautomobili di alto costo
ad essere divenuta esclusiva non per il suo prezzo ma per la sua
potenza. Vi sono automobili che costano di piu. Chi dunque vuole
investire il suo danaro in null'altro che in rappresentanza, non sara
completamente soddisfatto della Mercedes-Benz 600.

Chi invece vuole acquistare I' automobile insieme piu comoda


e piu moderna offerta attualmente, e oltre a cio apprezza la sensazione di valorizzare il progresso, trovera nella Mercedes-Benz
600 tutto cio che desidera.
Chi apprezza questa automobile mostra di apprezzare anche
alcune altre cose. Perche la 600 rivela in modo inequivocabile una
serie di modi di vedere che entrano afar parte della sua costruzione.
Cosi la 600 disdegna le barocche sovrabbondanze nella linea,
prive di sostanza automobilistica. Chi ne misura la grandezza col
metro e la raffronta al costo, non rende giustizia a questa vettura.
Per tutti coloro che dicono: ,,Si sarebbe dovuto farla pagare
piu cara, e sarebbe certamente guardata con ancora maggiore
stupore e meraviglia" per costoro non vi puo essere che un sorriso.
La Mercedes-Benz 600 e una silenziosa e possente automobile.
Essa si e imposta con la forza delle sue doti di potenza al di la
dei confmi.
Sedetevi all'interno. Tutto e come al solito, eppure totalmente diverso. Nessuna percezione di rumore dal motore. I sedili
vanno automaticamente, a comando idraulico, nella posizione
desiderata, antenne fuoriescono, cofani si chiudono, la temperatura varia a piacere, la vettura si solleva fmo al livello desiderata,
e quando, tra unaimportantediscussioneel'altra, vi saretestancati
di tutto cio, potrete per divertimento lasciarvi alle spalle una
vettura sportiva.
In quest'auto potete dormire e nulla vi disturbera. Potete

dirigere di la, molti lo fanno. Potete prendere importanti decisioni,


seduti all'interno di essa, oppure portarvi il necessario per la pesca
e andarvene verso il grande mare azzurro.
In questa vettura abbiamo lasciato un paio di metri tra il

vostro corpo e il traffico esterno. Per la vostra comodita non


poteva essere fat to piu di quanto e stato fatto. Noi Vi ridiamo il
massimo possibile gusto del viaggiare in automobile. In un'epoca
in cui si conquista il cosmo, abbiamo ritenuto giusto fare qualcosa

Con un imP-ianto di climatizzazione supplementare possono
essere compensate anche estreme condizioni esterne di temperatura.

Quando e montato
l'impianto di climatizzazione, l'aria refrigerata puo essere
inviata direttamente

Tutti i sedili hanno una conformazione anatomica. 11 loro molleggio distribuito in profondita e accordato esattamente al molleggio del veicolo e ao e vero ad ogni velocita Gli occupanti non
sono assoggettati a oscillazioni affaticanti, indipendentemente
dalla lunghezza del percorso.

Per la sicurezza: sezioni anteriore e posteriore ad assorbimento

le parti contro cui i corpi degli occupanti potrebbero essere
proiettati, sono volta a volta imbottite, arrotondate oppure

e molto altro ancora. La sicurezza di questo veicolo corrisponde
allo standard di sicurezza Mercedes-Benz.
Non esiste nulla di piu efficace.

Lilluminazione per l'accesso e dotata di un interruttore a


tempo. 10 secondi dopo l'entrata essa si spegne automaticamente.
Vi sono ben 4 accendisigari. Anche un termometro che riporta
all'intemo l'indicazione della temperatura estema appartiene alla
dotazione normale.
Pua anche avvenire che si desideri un'altra lampada, un quinto accendisigari, una separazione tra sedili anteriori e posteriori,
tavolini di lavoro, un bar, un telefono, altri sedili o un abitacolo
notevolmente piu ampio.
La Mercedes-Benz 600 esi montata su una (propria) catena,
ma tuttavia prevalentemente amano. Ogni esemplarevienecostruito su ordinazione. Esiste quindi la possibilita di tener conto di
gusti particolari, anche non previsti nel programma delle dotazioni
speciali. Anche inconsueti. Sono stati forniti su espressa ordinazione persino rivestimenti verde-erba con moquette rosa
Esiste tuttavia un limite che non puo essere superato, e sicuramente su cio sono daccordo construttore e compratori: non
vengono effettuate quelle modifiche che potreb bero compromettere gli elementi costruttivi della vettura volti alla sicurezza. Sono
pure impossibili variazioni stilistiche.

Poiche la Mercedes-Benz 600 e costruita anche per quella


cerchia di persone alle quali compete il dovere di essere rappresentative, esiste anche una esecuzione allungata della vettura. Essa
offre 3/4 di metro in piu di spazio per i sedili posteriori.
E'possibile l'applicazione dei sedili posteriori ,,vis-a-vis"
oppure in due ftle una dietro l'altra. E'possibile avere poltrone
imbottite o seggiolini ribaltabili o una qualsiasi altra terza
soluzione.
I maestri a cui e affidata la costruzione di questo veicolo
hanno accumulato un tale grado di conoscenza ed esperienza, che
ogni esemplare che lascia le loro mani e un capolavoro, nel significato tedesco o meglio svevo, e quindi piu di questa parola.
Solo in un caso essi tengono per se cio che sanno: i committenti di queste vetture rimangono anonimi.

L a chiave della Mercedes-Benz 600 appare diversa dalle


altre chiavi d'automobile.
Quando essa viene inserita nella serratura della portiera del
guidatore e viene ruotata, anche tutte e tre le serrature delle altre
portiere si sbloccano.
Chiudendo a chiave la portiera del guidatore anche tutte le
altre vengono bloccate.
Anche la chiusura del bagagliaio e quella del tappo del serbatoio dipendono da quell'unica piccola rotazione di una sola
chiave nella serratura della portiera.
L'effetto di tutto cio e duplice. Primo, si dimostra che la
tecnica moderna non solo e perfetta, ma puo anche divertire. Perche e un divertimento far saltar sued abbassare nuovamente i tasti
di bloccaggio; secondo, viene dirnostrato che la chiave della
Mercedes-Benz 600 apre non solo la porta di una automobile, ma
anche quella di un modo di viaggiare nuovo, magnifico, possente,
silenzioso, esaltante e ristoratore.
