Dear Parishioners,
Our scripture readings today are just magnificent. Isaiah is
speaking at a very sad time for the people of Israel. They are in
captivity in a foreign land; Jerusalem is in ruins no sign of life! Yet, the prophet Isaiah tells
of a future glory; a messiah who would build the New Jerusalem, just like the new wine in
Cana.
In St. Pauls letter to the Corinthians, we are reminded of the variety of the Gifts of the
Holy Spirit. Each person has a gift to offer. Sometimes we dont recognise those gifts in
ourselves or in others. The Holy Spirit gives the gifts of teaching; the gift of faith; the gift of
healing; of proclaiming Gods Word; the gift of wisdom we all use these gifts in various
ways as individuals, as parents, as helpers, as sisters and priests. All are to be used for Gods
glory and for building his kingdom on earth.
Now in Cana in Galilee for the wedding feast; note this Sunday follows the Epiphany
and the Baptism of Our Lord this is the third manifestation of whom Jesus is. The story
isnt just about turning water into wine, it has more implications. Notice St. John speaks of a
sign not a miracle; the first of many signs given by Jesus to tell us who he is.
He is the new bridegroom at the wedding feast; the running out of wine indicates that
old ways are gone, now is a new beginning I have come that you may have life and in
abundance. This abundance and generosity is seen in the 120 gallons of wine Jesus gives.
It tells of Gods generosity to us all.
Note that Mary is there at the beginning and at the foot of the cross but knows her
place: Do whatever he tells you! This is our guide in following Jesus.
Today is PEACE SUNDAY we need to see Jesus in all people and especially those who
are enslaved in any way. While human beings suffer and are exploited, tortured and abused,
then we cannot remain silent. That is a challenge for us today. Please be as generous as you
can to the PAX Christi retiring collection today.
Week of PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY 18 25 January: We pray for unity among
Christians as Jesus prayed: that all may be one.
FAREWELL: We bid farewell to Fr Samuel on Friday last as he returns to Ghana, we
thank him for his time with us and wish him well in his ministry.
HELLO: We welcome Fr Edward Flynn who will be with us over the weekend. He has
just finished his work in Geneva for Vivat International and is now awaiting further
appointment.
Have a wonderful week.
Fr Joe

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY IN
