High Strength,

low alloy steels

Flat products, hot rolled into high strength steels for cold forming

1 Description and advantages

2 Typical applications

These steels conform to the European standard EN 10149.2 :

1995. This type of steel is called a high strength, low alloy (HSLA)
steel.
High strength, low alloy steels are characterised by low carbon and
alloy element contents, which give them excellent functional properties such as suitability for cold forming, profiling, welding and coating. Their strengthening mechanisms of precipitation hardening and
grain size refinement enable the achievement of high strength levels.

Advantages of HSLA steels:

They combine improved weldability, due to the very low carbon level, with good formability. Their mechanical characteristics facilitate
forming on presses and automated lines. They are further characteriHSLA steels are generally for structural parts such as welded tubes,

beams and profiled or slightly pressed parts.

Thanks to their high elasticity limit (Re), they are particularly suited
when a reduction in weight is required. This is why these steels are
often used to replace conventional structural steels.

Automotive: pressed chassis and reinforcement parts, beams or

welded tubes.

HSLA steels are used in sectors such as :

Industrial vehicles, tractors, trailers and skips as chassis components (resistance to fatigue).
Lifting and handling equipment (cranes, fork lifts, platforms, warehouse shelves, lifts).
The agricultural sector for chassis and protective elements.
Roll bars, buildings, containers, urban lighting masts, concrete
mixers
