How and why


You are probably aware that your intestines act to break
down food, absorb nutrients and eliminate waste. What is
lesser known is that your intestines maintain fluid electrolyte
balance, and lymphatic drainage. This means that when your
bowels become unclean and partially blocked, toxins begin
to circulate in the body. This happens to almost everybody
sooner or later.

Better than fasting


Although partial fasting is involved in The Ultimate Cleanse,
fasting alone cannot achieve these excellent results. Fasting
can leave you feeling fatigued and toxic. This occurs because
your bowels are not cleared by fasting and in fact can
become dry, actually causing more compaction, and more
toxin accumulation. Flushing of your body only occurs when
special herbs are consumed in conjunction with fasting.

Red meats do not digest easily and refined grains leave a


sticky glutinous residue on your intestinal wall. Therefore a
gradual plaque builds up, just as it does on our teeth with

Why do I need an intestinal and liver cleanse?

Over the years we can accumulate a putrid toxic mass in
the intestines, often compacted and caught in the folds of

How The Ultimate Cleanse works

During The Ultimate Cleanse they are taken in multiple
capsule form and work to soften compacted faecal matter, strip
away plaque build-up, kill parasites and detrimental bacteria.
The healing food you are restricted to for the course, and
the wholesome herbs in The Ultimate Cleanse ensure
that your liver and kidneys are cleansed and their
functions stimulated.
We have prepared a weekly shopping list for all the foods
contained here in our recipes. If you are unable to get any of
these foods just get extra of what you can.
What happens during The Ultimate Cleanse?
Over the first few days your bowel motions become more
frequent and of larger volume. In the next couple of days
fecal impactions and plaque begin to be eliminated, causing
bowel motions of mis-shapen darker material. During the
cleanse your energy may actually increase. However for
some people, energy may be low on day 3 or 4 of the 5
and 10 day programs. Be prepared for this possibility. This
is a day to relax and let your detoxification process unfold.
Typically you will also lose 2 to 3 kilograms a week during
The Ultimate Cleanse. Usually you will also lose a desire for
unhealthy foods and sweets and enjoy natural wholesome
foods. These changes can be life-long for some people.

Can I continue to work or travel?


Yes certainly, as long as you are not too far from a toilet. You
could be passing bowel motions several times a day.
Am I allowed to have coffee, tobacco or alcohol?
The Ultimate Cleanse is an ideal time to quit these habits.
However if severe withdrawal symptoms occur, do not
overstress yourself, just cut back to the best of your ability.
You will still benefit greatly from the Cleanse.
Will I feel uncomfortable in my body?
You can experience temporary discomfort as lodged
materials shift in your body, however this is normally relieved
by the next bowel motion. If you feel bloated, peppermint tea
gives great relief.
What if I feel sick on the program?
Some people have experienced nausea, vomiting or
diarrhoea at the beginning of the program. If this occurs, it
indicates a serious plaque or toxin build-up. Stop the program
immediately and start again very slowly. You are better to try
the diet for 2 weeks before beginning the program and then
try the 25 day plan.
Should I alter my prescription drugs?
Keep taking any current medications and consult your doctor
about any changes. Digestive drugs should not be needed
after this cleanse. See your doctor.

What foods am I allowed?


Most vegetables and fruits, yoghurt, vegetable soups, fruit and
vegetable juices, fruit and vegetable salads, avocados, cold
pressed oils e.g. olive oil, brown rice, herbal teas, natural spices
and herbs.

PREPARATION Stage
An intestinal cleanse needs some preparation. I remind
you that if you have any serious doubt about your health
condition, it is recommended that you obtain your doctors
approval to undergo this herbal cleanse.
Below is a list of dietary changes which need to be followed
for three to seven days before beginning The Ultimate
Cleanse. The main thing to remember is: eliminate starches,
processed foods and stick mainly to fresh fruits, vegetables
and juices, smoothies, soups and yoghurt.
Foods to completely avoid
All refined, processed, and packaged foods.
Breads, pasta, and other wheat-containing products.
All grains, seeds, crackers and snack bars.
All meats, including chicken.
All fried foods.
Eggs, nuts and baked beans.
Sweets, chocolate and soft drinks.
Bananas
Potatoes
Foods to be eaten very moderately (if at all)
Root vegetables (except potatoes).
Brown rice.
Steamed or tinned fish.
Hummus or tofu.
Cheese.
Pickles such as olives, gherkins, onions.
Supermarket juices.
Foods to be eaten freely
All fresh fruits (except bananas).
Raw vegetables.
Vegetable soups (homemade).
Diluted fruit juices (homemade).
Vegetable juices (homemade).
Unsweetened yoghurt.
Herbal teas.
Cayenne, garlic and ginger.
Culinary herbs.
Pure water (2 litres daily).

An ideal kick start to The Ultimate Cleanse is half a teaspoon


of Epsom Salts in water twice daily during the three days
of preparation. You are now ready for the cleansing stage.

Take fruit for lunch and buy vegetables and fresh fruits for
juicing. You can have extra yoghurt and olive oil or cream to
keep energy up.

Taking the herbs


I have tried to keep it as easy as possible while ensuring
the best of results. Follow your common sense when taking
the remedies. Dont worry if you miss something, you can
just take it later without a problem. Continue with your
normal routine, including work (unless very physical). You
can use the juices to swallow capsules. You dont have
to follow our food and juice recipes to the letter and if you
really get hungry, have some yoghurt and a piece of fruit
or an avocado. Extra olive oil on your salad is good for
energy also.

Be certain you have eliminated ALL starches,


ALL meat and ALL processed foods. Eat mainly
fresh fruits, vegetables and juices, soups and
unsweetened yoghurt.

Note: Gentlelax - It is best to empty the Gentlelax capsules


and mix the powder into a glass of water. Otherwise you
should always take the Gentlelax with at least a 200 ml glass
of water.

It is best to gradually bring your diet into line with this


regimen over a few days. First eliminate the refined foods
(including bread, pasta, biscuits, cake and pastry) and fried
foods. The next day eliminate meats and eggs. The next day
drop the nuts and beans. This is the time stock up with fresh
vegetables for making soups, plenty of garlic, chilli, and
spices. See page 37 for a suggested shopping list.

Once you have been on this diet for at least 3 days (preferably
a week) you are ready to begin taking the herbs. From this
point on you will need to follow the diet as strictly as you can.

Shakes & Smoothies (very important)


Shakes and smoothies are a key part of this program because
they are designed to encourage digestive function and
maintain energy levels. Below is a list of especially beneficial
ingredients which should be used in your smoothies. Make a
large 500ml smoothie every morning during your cleanse.
- 2 cups of milk (only if you can get raw milk directly from
the farm), or purified water.
- Organic acidophilus yoghurt (include 1 cup per smoothie).
Remember, yoghurt is OK for lactose intolerance.
- High quality, non-denatured whey protein powder
(2 heaped dessert spoons)
- Pineapples, paw paw and mangoes. High in digestive
enzymes
- Extra acidophillus or probiotic powder (not essential, but
does assist)
The reason a lot of digestive problems occur is due to
insufficient intestinal bacteria and living flora. Many microorganisms assist with digestion and when this is out of
balance the whole body suffers. Conditions like irritable
bowel, colitis, Crohns, celiac, diverticulitis and food
intolerances can be relieved by restoring this balance. The
smoothies may initially cause a bloating effect as they reestablish this balance. Try adding a little cinnamon or a few
fennel seeds to the blender if this occurs. You should feel
very energized and enjoy the whole smoothie experience.
Caffeine and Alcohol withdrawal
Caffeine is found in tea, coffee, chocolate and some
soft drinks. When you stop taking caffeine or alcohol
your body may experience one or more of the following
withdrawal symptoms headaches, migraine, nausea,
vomiting, low energy, or a general unwell feeling.
I recommend that during The Ultimate Cleanse, if it
places extra unnecessary stress on your body, that you
do not completely stop coffee or alcohol (unless this is
your desire). Just reduce to 1 or 2, 200ml servings per
day. This will not interfere with the programs success.

EASY DETOX RECIPE SUGGESTIONS

Easy detox Recipe suggestions


Juices
Delicious juice combinations could contain the following, in
this order of preference. Try not to combine fruit and vegetable
juices. They digest better separately. Beetroot, carrot, apple,
prune, orange, grape, grapefruit, lemon, tomato, pineapple,
feijoa. All of these juices can be combined with black pepper
and or chilli pepper which aid peristaltic action (intestinal
motility). You may find single juices are easier to digest and
add more variety. Perfect for a quick energy boost.

Yoghurt smoothies
This is a great way to start your day. Just take your
favourite fruit (but not bananas - too starchy) and fruit
juice, add some yoghurt or raw organic milk (soy milk
or rice milk preferred), a pinch of cinnamon and blend
until smooth. Throw in some barley grass powder for
more energy.

Fruit salads
Try combining different fruits with plain unsweetened
yoghurt. You can include oranges, pears, nectarines, plums,
peaches, pineapple, kiwifruit, apples, mangoes, cherries,
prunes, apricots. Remember: not bananas (mentioned
above).

JUICES

Apple and carrot juice


Simply delicious, this juice is one of the most refreshing
tasting juices we recommend.
4 carrots
4 apples
Wash and chop the carrot and apples if necessary, to fit in
the juicer. Juice and drink immediately. If you like celery add
two sticks. A little lemon juice prevents these juices from
going brown.

Raspberry and peach juice


Raspberry and peach juice is a thick, sweet, restorative
juice. It is particularly good if you are over-tired or anaemic.
If you find it too thick, add an apple or water.
1 small punnet of raspberries
2 peaches
Wash all the fruit and stone the peaches. Juice and drink
immediately.

Kiwifruit and pineapple juice


4 ripe peeled kiwi fruit
1 medium pineapple with top removed

Tomato juice
This is a vivid, bright red juice. The tomatoes contain betacarotene which helps to boost the bodys immunity to disease
and is great for the skin.
6 tomatoes

Cut the fruit into pieces and blend.


Wash the tomatoes and cut them in half , if necessary, to fit
in the juicer. Juice and drink immediately.
Mango tango
1 mango
1/2 pineapple, or 1 small pineapple
6 strawberries
4 tablespoons of pineapple juice, honey to taste (optional)
Peel the mango and the pineapple and cut them into cubes,
discarding the pineapple core. De-stalk the strawberries.
Pour the pineapple juice over the fruit and leave to soak for
30 minutes. If the fruit is ripe this should sweeten it enough.
If it is too tart for your taste, add a little honey.

Tomato juice with spring onions


8 large tomatoes
2 fat spring onion bulbs
4 large sprigs of basil
6 large sprigs of oregano
Roughly chop the tomatoes and spring onions and put them
into a blender with the leaves from the basil and oregano.
Whizz until smooth.

Cut mango into pieces then add to yoghurt and blend it until
smooth. You can also replace yoghurt with 425 ml of almond,
soya or rice milk.

Kiwi and passion fruit smoothie


4 passion fruit
250 gm of plain organic yoghurt
100 ml of raw organic milk
3 peeled kiwi fruit cut into chunks

SMOOTHIES

Yoghurt and mango smoothie


300 gm of unsweetened yogurt
1 large peeled mango

Cut the passion fruit in half widthways and rub


through a sieve to extract all the juice. Discard the pips.
Put the rest of the ingredients into a blender and whiz
until smooth. Alternativly use a wand blender.

Blueberry and strawberry smoothie


100 gm blueberries
6 large strawberries
425 ml of raw organic milk
This combination of berries and soya can help regulate
the hormonal balance of the menstrual cycle and also can
prevent some of the symptoms of menopause.
Put ingredients into a blender and whiz until smooth.

Yoghurt and prune smoothie


400 gm of unsweetened yoghurt
12 stoned prunes
Prunes are very good on a detox as they have the ability to
move through the body quickly, alleviating build up. Put the
ingredients into a blender and whiz until smooth.
Sprinkle with cinnamon and serve cold.

SALADS
Coleslaw
1/4 white cabbage
1/4 red cabbage
1 large carrot
1 apple
A small handful raisins
A small handful chopped hazelnuts *
4 tablespoons (60 ml) yoghurt/vinegar 50/50 blend
Finely shred the cabbages. Scrape or peel and grate the
carrot. Grate the apple. Mix the cabbage, carrot and apple
then add the raisins and hazelnuts.
Combine the yoghurt/vinegar dressing
with the salad and serve.

Tomato and avocado salad


2 large tomatoes
1 large avocado
Chop into wedges 2 cm wide and sprinkle with spring onion,
basil, chives, cold pressed olive oil and apple cider vinegar.

Beetroot salad
3 large beetroot boiled in skins for 20 minutes. Peel and dice
into 2 cm cubes. Add 100 gm mung bean sprouts, 1 large
shredded carrot, juice of 2 lemons, 20 ml Cider vinegar,
50 ml Olive oil, Chopped Rocket, Parsley or Coriander.

Broccoli and cucumber salad


I head of broccoli
1 cucumber
1 red capsicum
1 orange or apple
Chop all ingredients into 2 cm cubes and dress with herbs,
vinegar and olive oil.
Try a combination of any of the above ingredients into a
green leafy salad.

Rice salad (serves 4) * (25 and 50 day plans only)


3 cups boiled brown rice
2 tablespoons (30ml) cold pressed olive oil
1 onion, peeled and chopped
2 cloves of garlic, crushed
60 g (2oz) flaked almonds
60 g (2oz) pine nuts
1 tbsp (15ml) lemon juice
85 g (3oz) dried apricots
2 tbsp (30ml) chopped fresh coriander

Heat the olive oil in the pan, add the onion and garlic and cook
over a moderate heat for 5 minutes until they are translucent.
Turn up the heat, add the almonds and pine nuts and cook
for a few minutes longer, stirring often, until the onion and

along with the lemon juice, the apricots and coriander.
Mix together then transfer to a serving dish.
Variations: Add onions and leafy greens to the rice. Serve
with pine nuts sprinkled on top*.

SOUP SUGGESTIONS

Pumpkin soup (8 servings)


1 pumpkin
2 carrots
2 large onions
6-8 large cloves of garlic
Cayenne pepper
Curry powder
Take 1 whole pumpkin and dice into 5cm cubes. Add a
couple of carrots if you wish.
Finely chop onions and the cloves of garlic and simmer these
lightly in olive oil until soft adding a pinch of cayenne pepper
and two teaspoons of curry powder (optional).
Add the pumpkin and stir well into onions for five minutes.
Add 4-6 cups of water depending on the size of pumpkin and
allow to simmer until pumpkin is soft. Mash or blend the soup
until smooth adding more water if needed. This soup is nice
served with yoghurt added and a sprinkling of mixed herbs
and cracked pepper. This soup can be made with kumara,
carrot or swede.

Tomato and leek soup (4 servings)


Simmer 2 large onions, 1 large leek and 6 cloves of garlic in
olive oil over low heat until soft. Add one 425 gm tin tomatoes
and 4 fresh chopped tomatoes. 1/2 jar pasta sauce. 1 tsp
turmeric, 1 tsp paprika and 1 tsp carraway seeds. Add water
to make a soup.
Just before serving - add 2 teaspoons of miso. Adding at the
end of cooking preserves the nutrients in miso.
Make other similar soups
using either carrots, Kumara,
onions, parsnip or mushrooms.

Vegetable soup
1 large peeled onion (chopped finely)
2 cloves of garlic (finely chopped)
2 large carrots (diced)
3 leeks (sliced)
4 peeled courgettes (thinly sliced)
700ml of veggie stock
3 tbsp of tomato puree
1 bunch of parsley (finely chopped)
Heat olive oil and saute the onions and garlic for 5 minutes.
Add the carrots, leeks and courgettes and continue cooking
for a further 5 minutes. Pour in the stock and tomato puree
and simmer until the vegetables are soft. Add the parsley
and continue cooking for about 5 minutes. You should get
about 3 servings from this.

More soup ideas


This is recommended as a mainstay in this program so
here is our recipe. Take 6 cups of your favourite vegetables
(pumpkin, carrots, kumara, parsnip, swede, mushrooms,
tomatoes. NO POTATOES, SOUP MIX, BARLEY OR SPLIT
PEAS.) Dice these into 5cm cubes. Finely chop two large
onions and 6-8 large cloves of garlic and simmer these
lightly in olive oil until soft, adding a pinch of cayenne pepper

MAINS

Roasted vegetable feast * (25 and 50 day plans only)

Take generous portions of all the vegetables and cut into
similar sizes. Cook the hard vegetables first in a drizzle of
olive oil. Then add the soft vegetables.

Roasted peppers with millet * (25 and 50 day plans only)


(serves 4)
2 large red peppers
3 tbsps (45 ml) cold pressed olive oil
1 small onion, chopped
2 cloves of garlic, crushed
175g (6oz) millet
2 tbsps (30ml) fresh parsley, finely chopped
600ml (1 pint) vegetable stock
About 8 cherry tomatoes, halved
Heat oven to 190o C/ 375o F Gas mark 5.
Cut the peppers in half lengthways, keeping the stalk
attached, and remove the seeds. Brush the outsides with
a little of the olive oil then place them, skin side down, in a
roasting dish, packed quite tightly so they do not roll over.
Heat 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of olive oil in a separate pan and
lightly saut the onion for about 5 minutes until translucent.
Add the millet, parsley and vegetable stock. Bring to the boil,
reduce the heat, then simmer for about 20 minutes or until
the millet grains are soft.
Stir in the halved cherry tomatoes. Spoon the millet mixture
into the pepper halves. Sprinkle over the remaining olive oil.
Cover the roasting pan tightly with foil and bake for 1 hour
until the peppers are tender.

Heat oven to 190o C/375o F Gas mark 5.


Place the fish in a flat casserole dish after pouring in the oil.
Slice the onion into rings and crush garlic. Rub the crushed
garlic and lay onion rings over the fish. Squeeze one half
of the lemon and spoon some of the oil over the top. Place
under the grill. Serve with a salad.

Spinach with yoghurt


900g of baby spinach leaves
3 tbsps of pumpkin seeds* (25 and 50 day plans only)
150g unsweetened yoghurt
Wash spinach and put into a saucepan with only the water
clinging to it. Add the pumpkin seeds. Cover and cook over a
very low heat until spinach is wilted, about 7 minutes. Drain,
cool slightly and chop roughly. Stir in the yoghurt and serve.

- Steamed silver beet or spinach
- Steamed cauliflower, broccoli, carrots
or cabbage
- Cucumber, celery or carrot sticks with
guacamole (avocado dip) or a little hummus

500gm fresh fish
1 large lemon
1 large onion

1 finely sliced onion
1 finely sliced leek
1 diced carrot
2 stalks of finely sliced celery
110g finely sliced mushrooms
110g mixed sultanas, raisins and apricots
100g of quinoa
Cut the apricots to the size of the raisins. Heat the oil in
a saucepan and saut the onions gently until soft. Add the
other vegetables and the dried fruit, cover and cook gently
until tender about 15 minutes. Add water if it seems to be
drying out. Meanwhile bring 500ml of water to the boil in a
large saucepan. Add the quinoa, reduce the heat, cover and
leave for 10 minutes until all the water is absorbed. Stir in the
vegetables and dried fruit and serve.

MY EASY TO SHOP - CHECK LIST


More juice options
Juice combinations could contain the following, in this order
of preference. Try not to combine fruit and vegetable juices:
beetroot, carrot, apple, orange, grape, grapefruit, lemon,
tomato, pineapple, feijoa. All of these juices can be combined
with black pepper and or chilli pepper if desired. These aid
peristaltic action. You may find single juices are easier to
digest and add more variety. You may wish to check out your
nearest library for books with juicing recipes.
Protein shakes
This is a great way to start your day. Just take your favourite
fruit (sorry no bananas as they are too starchy) and fruit
juice, add some yoghurt or raw organic milk, soy or rice milk,
a pinch of cinnamon. Add 2 heaped dessertspoons of good
quality non-denatured whey protein powder (sugar free) and
blend until smooth. Throw in some barley grass powder for
more energy. This is an excellent blood sugar stabilizer and
really helps keep your energy high during the cleanse.
More fruit salads
Try combining different fruit and adding yoghurt. You
can include oranges, pears, nectarines, plums, peaches,
pineapple, kiwifruit, apples, mangoes, cherries, prunes,
apricots, strawberries, raisins, tamarillos. Do not add
bananas.

TOXIC MATTER

- Move towards more vegetable foods and vegetable


protein sources such as beans, lentils, dahl, tofu, hummus,
chickpeas, corn and brown rice. This should ideally be the
cornerstone of your diet. Base all your meals around a
good protein source. (Vegetarians are known to live 20%
longer and have 20% more stamina than meat eaters).

- Eat light fruit and salad foods when moving fast, ie, at work
or on the road. Save the heavier foods for when you have a
chance to rest. Avoid eating under stress or in a rush.

Follow up important
Now that you have thoroughly cleansed your liver, kidney and
bowels you need to reinstate your bowel flora. Buy one litre
of the best plain, unsweetened acidophilus yoghurt you can
find in the supermarket. Take four tablespoons of this with 2
of your acidophilus capsules every night until finished.

- Include lots of herbs and spices in the diet. These are


highly medicinal and are missing from most western diets.
Herbs are very beneficial for long term health. Try basil,
cayenne, coriander, chilli, curry, cinnamon, ginger, garlic,
mixed herbs, thyme and turmeric.

Follow up diet
Once you have completed this stage of the program you
have completely cleansed your body and the real results will
begin to show. What you do from this point on will determine
how long term the results will be. It is important over the
following week to be very careful about what you eat. I
recommend that you reverse the process of going onto The
Ultimate Cleanse program, one step at a time. Go through
the foods, gradually introducing one at a time and enjoy
the new taste experience. Your diet may never completely
return to the old ways. Food intolerances should now be
gone or easier to identify. Avoid these foods for a while and
give your intestinal walls some time off. This is the general
type of diet recommended, although it is a very basic guide.

Eat only when you are hungry


- Avoid refined starchy carbohydrates like white flour and
sugar, too much potato, chips, bread, cakes, biscuits,
buns, pasta, pastry, etc.

Clearances from the body similar to large unshapely, odd


coloured bowel motions may well occur. This begins for most
people around day three of the program. You may notice
the odd shape of the faecal matter. This is where it has
become lodged within the folds of your intestine. You may
notice the dark colour. This occurs when all bile pigments
have been re-absorbed by the body and putrefaction takes
place. This is common in the western diet, which is high in
refined foods. The stress levels of our fast paced lives, often
cause digestion to take back stage and therefore digestion
becomes inefficient. You should clear all this material from
your body during this program. Occasionally, some people
may need a second program to gain total clearance. But this
is rare and normally a repeat program in six months followed
by an annual cleanse does the complete job.

- Eat only whole foods (fresh fruits and vegetables) and


completely avoid refined products. They have little nutrition
and tend to bind and inhibit digestion.

Maintenance
Repeat The Ultimate Cleanse every year for optimum health.
Even after cleansing and maintaining a healthy diet, it may
still be difficult to avoid some kind of build up. Ideally, for
optimum health you could just have juices for a couple of
days each month and do The Ultimate Cleanse at least once

Am I allowed to have coffee, tobacco or alcohol?


If you are a regular daily drinker or smoker then I
recommend cutting back to the best of your ability,
or ideally stopping completely. However, if severe
headaches occur, you are better off to indulge a little
rather than over-stress yourself. The Ultimate Cleanse
is an ideal time to quit these habits and detoxify.
S
 hould I alter my prescription drugs? You should
keep taking any current medications and consult your
doctor about any changes. Some digestive drugs may
not be needed after this cleanse. See your doctor.

6. W
 hat if I experience bloating and/or constipation?
You can experience temporary discomfort when
lodged materials shift in the body, however this is
normally relieved by the next bowel motion. If bloating
and/or pain occurs for more than 24 hours: Cease
the remedies until this subsides; take 1/2 teaspoon
of Epsom Salts in water, 2 to 3 times in 24 hours;
peppermint, chamomile and ginger teas may help.

9. Will I experience any headaches? Not normally, but it can


happen if you are detoxifying drugs or chemicals. Take a
pinch of Epsom salts in a glass of water twice daily and rub
some peppermint essential oil into the temples (avoid the
eyes). Drink lots of water and breathe deeply as much as
possible. It should pass. If you are prone to migraines then
pain medications are OK.
10. How often can I do The Ultimate Cleanse? Once or
twice a year. It all depends on lifestyle and diet. The less
starchy, processed and refined food you eat, the longer
you can wait.

remedy is peppermint tea, although chamomile, fennel
and lavender teas are also effective. Try an Epsom
salts bath (4-6 cups) or a massage with lavender, clove
or nutmeg oils. You should not normally experience
prolonged or severe discomfort. The program should be
stopped if this occurs, and resumed later.

 an I stop and start? Yes you can manage your own
cleanse schedule. Start at half the dose after a 24
hour rest period for the first day, and then resume the
