System Integration
The process of creating a complex information system that may include
designing or building a customized architecture or application, integrating it with
new or existing hardware, packaged and custom software, and communications.
Most enterprises rely on an external contractor for program management of most
or all phases of system development. This external vendor generally also
assumes a high degree of the projects risks.
melting the existing systems and new technologies to form more capable
systems that are intended to take on additional tasks, exhibit performance,
and/or enhance existing systems
a logical, objective procedure for applying new and/or expanded performance
requirements in an efficient, timely manner to the design, procurement,
installation and operational configuration consisting of distinct modules (or
subsystems), each of which may embody inherent constraints or limitations.
System integration is the process of developing an all-round information system
that encompasses building a user centered application and integrating it to
existing or new hardware. It can also be said to be the procedure of melting
existing systems and marrying it with new technologies to make a new system
with more capabilities to replace existing ones to perform additional tasks and
attain improved performance or enhance existing systems.
How well a business performs depends on how well its business processes
are designed and coordinated. Well-designed business processes can be a
source of competitive strength for a company if it can use the processes to
innovate or perform better than its rivals. Conversely, poorly designed or
executed business processes can be a liability if they are based on
outdated ways of working and impede responsiveness or efficiency.
What are some examples of business processes and how would systems be
integrated to address these processes?
Examples of business processes include receiving orders, invoicing, shipping products, updating
employee information, or setting a marketing budget. Business processes occur at all levels of an
organization's activities and include events that the customer sees and events that are invisible
to the customer. The term also refers to the amalgam of all the separate steps toward the final
business goal.
Why is it necessary for any systems integration project to have realistic cost
data? What types of costs need to be considered? Is it possible to accurately
forecast systems costs?
