The path
The worlds leading long distance runner in 1954 was a man named Roger Bannister. At this time in
history, no one believed that it was possible for a human being to run a mile in less than four minutes.
The experts said that it could not be done. But Roger Bannister did it. Less than a month later, an
Aussie named John Landie broke Bannisters record by running it nearly 2 seconds faster. The sports
world began to wonder when they would see Landie and Bannister on a track together.
It happened on August 7, 1954 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Landie led the race and thought that
he had Bannister beaten. As he was coming toward the finish line the thought entered his mind,
where is Bannister? How far behind me is he? Overly curious, he just couldnt handle the question
anymore; he glanced over his left shoulder to see how far Bannister was behind him. At that very
moment, Bannister pulled past Landie on his right side. With less than 70 yards left in the mile-long
race, Bannister was ahead for the first time. He tore through the tape at 3:58.8 seconds. Landie
followed a scant less than a second later.
For the rest of his life Landie would lament, If I hadnt looked back I would have won that race. I
lost my focus. In looking back, I stumbled just enough to allow Bannister to overtake me.
So it is in life. Heres a word from the Word

LIFE CARE OF TULLAHOMA

Mary Ann Roberts

Brothers, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: forgetting what is
behind and reaching forward to what is ahead, I pursue as my goal the prize promised by Gods
heavenly call in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:13-14)
