(These Guidelines are part of contents in the Manual for Practical Training)
1.0

INTRODUCTION TO PRACTICAL TRAINING

Practical training is structured for a combined period of 17 WEEKS where students spend on
industrial placement allowing them the opportunity to exercise their technical and managerial
skills in real situations. This shall contribute towards enhancing career knowledge and early
exposure of professional training to equate with current practice.
1.1

Objectives

Upon completion, students should be able:


1. to apply the knowledge, technique, skill and current quantity surveying tools
necessary for quantity surveying practices (C6, P6, A3)
2. to develop positive values, ethical, moral standards, teamwork and leadership
Skills in quantity surveying practices (C6, P5, A5).
3. to conduct a small scale survey and to prepare systematic structured technical
reports in related to quantity surveying current practices (C6, P7, A5).
To achieve these objectives, the practical training report shall be done in such a way that
these objectives are met, especially on the overall understanding of the industry working
environment. The report shall be original work of the student.

2.0

PRACTICAL TRAINING REPORT

Students are required to submit the tasks in the form of reports and specific works assigned.
The assessment and appraisal of the students performance are as follows:

2.0

REPORT (20%)

Students are required to write a report on a project/case study depending on the


firm/organization the students are attached to.
This report shall consist of the following headings:

This report shall be between 3000 to 5000 words. (not including appendices)
Use of photos, figures, graphs, statistics, and plans etc. will enhance the reports
assessment.

Special Task- ECA (10%)


Students are required to prepare Elemental Cost Analysis (ECA) as a special task. The
Elemental Cost Analysis is based on the manual and standard form prepared by Institution
of Surveyors, Malaysia. The Assessment Coordinator shall brief the students on this special
task, which includes the following:

i)

The project selected for the ECA shall fulfill the following criteria:
project handled by the firm/organisation in which they are attached

ii)

project shall be awarded within the last three (3) years, either under
construction or already completed

Preparation of ECA shall be based on the ECA Manual by ISM.


A complete submission shall comprise the following:
i)
ECA Form 1, 2 & 3
ii)
A3 drawings on plans, sections and elevations.
iii)
Calculation of gross floor area (GFA)
iv)
A copy of the General Summary of Contract Sum (cost
breakdown)

Students are strictly prohibited from reproducing completed ECA from ISM
(Institute of Surveyors Malaysia) or ECA prepared by other firm/organisation.

This report shall consist of the following:

Employers Appraisal (40%)


This appraisal serves as a feedback from the employers on the overall performance
of the students during practical training and will form part of the assessment.

Log Book (10%)


Students are required to record their daily activities in a log book. The log book shall
be checked by the supervisor every week or once in every two weeks.
Students are required to read and understand all instructions given in the logbook
and duly fill all information required. They shall also record precisely the nature and
scope of work done and keep all entries updated, e.g. project title, scope of work
related to the project.
A sample of logbook and log book entries is attached as Appendix I and Appendix II
respectively.
Interview (20%)
Interview will be held by lecturers towards the end of practical training session to
assess their learning progress and to gauge the employers comments.
During the visit, the lecturer shall assess the following aspects:

Type/quantity of job/work undertaken


Understanding of the office procedure and Quantity Surveyor tasks
The students learning and attitudes progress.
Understanding of the written report.

Attendance
Students are required to give full concentration on the practical training at all time as
specified by the Coordinator. They are not allowed to ask/take any leave from the
place of training unnecessarily without permission of the firms supervisor.
Attendance shall be recorded in the attendance sheet provided, weekly signed and
endorsed by the firms supervisor. The attendance report will become a basis for the
firms supervisor to assess the students commitment on the training.
A sample of attendance sheet is given in Appendix III.
Replacement day for mc must be an equivalent with total day of the mc.

3.0

FORMAT OF WRITTEN REPORT


Students are required to prepare the reports in a systematic manner.
Students shall request from the supervisor an allocation of one hour per day for the
preparation of reports.
The format of the reports shall be as follow:

All reports shall be typed in double spacing, A4 size, Arial 11.


The reports shall be from reliable sources;
a)
Interviews with the relevant consultants and contractors.
b)
Newspaper reports and relevant magazines.
c)
Site visits.
Relevant photos and figures shall be attached together with the report where
necessary.

SUBMISSION OF REPORT
A copy of the report shall be submitted to the visiting lecturer during the visit. The
report / special task shall be the property of the Department.
The date of the visit shall be advised by the Coordinator prior to the visit.
