Getting Started In Writing

(Arle, Jan Renn O.)

A. Making a Start

Draft your introduction. Catch your readers interest

Activate background knowledge. Review restored information.
Follow the plan or order. Follow sequence of events.
Cite your supporting points and expand them. Give enough details to
support your idea.
Wrap things up. Dont leave a hanging idea. End up by restating the main
idea or summarizing the details presented.

B. Setting up Circumstances

Relax. You may write with the TV switched on. It is important to find
instances that put you in the mood for writing.
Set a place for writing. Find a place where you will not be disturbed; where
there is proper lighting and enough space for your needed materials.
Established a routine. Set activities that will help you get started, like
preparing your materials and picking up snacks to keep you going.
Change places. If you have difficulty starting your paper, find another
place.
Lessen disturbances. Disturbances cant be avoided but can be lessened.
Put your cellphone in silent mode or switch on answering machine before
you start writing.
Avoid excuses. Theres always an appointed time for everything, and it is
to write.
Give way to inspiration. Anybody and anything can be your inspiration.
Choose your best time. Set a definite to writing but if the schedule doesnt
work well, change your usual timeframe.

C. Stating and Using a Thesis

A thesis is a single declarative sentence that states what you want your
readers to know, believe, or understand after having read your essay.
Exact thesis sentence. Make use of concise and specific ideas. Take on a
subject upon which reasonable people could disagree.
Keep a single central idea in the thesis sentence. Only one idea is stated
in your thesis. Deal with a subject that can be adequately treated given the
nature of the assignment.
State your thesis positively. Pieces of evidence can be found in a positive
thesis. Assert your conclusions about a subject.

D. Making an Enjoyable Start

Set a time limit. Finish a page of your draft before the buzzer rings.
Slow to a crawl. Try to write something, even not a page in fifteen minutes.
Begin badly. You may start writing in a scratch of paper and mess up the
blank; it doesnt matter, just write.
Begin writing your interests. Write down the thought that comes first in
your mind.
