ReneMagrittewasaninternationallyacclaimedsurrealistartistofalltime,yetitwasnotuntilhis50s,whenhe

ReneMagrittewasbornin1898,toawealthymanufacturerfather.In1912,hismomwasfounddrownedinthe
RiverSambre.Shehadcommittedsuicide,andthefamilywaspubliclyhumiliatedbecauseofit.From1916to
1918,RenedecidedtostudyattheAcademiedesBeauxArt,whichwaslocatedinBrussels.Helefttheschool,
becausehethoughtthatitwasawasteoftime.Allhispaintingsafterwardreflectcubism,themovementswhich
wasintroducedbyPabloPicassandwasverypopularat 2/6

thetime.In1922hemarriedGeorgette,andtooka
numberofsmalljobs,includingpaintingcabbageroses
forawallpapercompany,inordertobeabletopaythe
bills.
Duringtheearlyperiodofhiscareer,shortlyfollowing
hismarriage,ReneMagrittewouldspendthefreetime
thathehad,creatingartformsandworkedonanumberof
piecesitwasduringthistimeperiodthatherealized
surrealismwastheartformwhichhemostenjoyed.The
ThreatenedAssassinwasoneofhisearliestpiecesin
1926,whichshowcasedthesurrealiststylewhichhehad
beenworkingonTheLostJockeywasanotherpiecethat
heintroducedin1925,whichalsoshowcasedthisart
form.Overthecourseofhiscareer,heproduceda
numberofvariantsonthispiece,andchangedtheformat
torecreatewhattheviewerwasexperiencing.
In1927,ReneMagrittehadhisfirstonemanshow,which
tookplaceattheGalerielaCentaurieinBrussels.During
thisperiodofhislife,hewasproducingnearlyonepiece
ofartworkeachday,whichmadeforanextensive
showing,andavarietyofuniquestylesforvisitorsofthe
exhibittosee.Butcriticsheapedabuseontheexhibition.
Depressedbythefailure,hemovedtoPariswherehe
becamefriendswithartistAndreBreton,thefounderof
Surrealism.In1924,AndreBretonpublishedhisfamous
bookTheSurrealistManifesto,inwhichhebased
Surrealisttheoryonasimplisticunderstandingofthe
psychoanalysisworkofSigmundFreud,inparticularhis
InterpretationsofDreams.From1927,through1930,
ReneMagrittebecameactivelyinvolvedinthesurrealist
group,andmuchoftheworksduringthistimeperiod
weredescribedascavernous,withmanyofhispaintings
showcasingbizarrescenes,withahintoferoticism.
ToMagritte,whatisconcealedismoreimportantthanwhatisopentoview:thiswastruebothofhisownfears
andofhismannerofdepictingthemysterious.Ifhewrappedabodyinlinen,ifhespreadcurtainsorwall
hangings,ifheconcealedheadsunderhoods,thenitwasnotsomuchtohideastoachieveaneffectof
alienation.Heemployedthistechniqueataveryearlystage,forexample,TheInventionofLife,TheLover,and
TheCentralStory,thesearecertainlyhismajorworks.
Everythingweseehidesanotherthing,wealwayswanttoseewhatishiddenbywhatwesee.
ReneMagritte
DuringtheGermanoccupationofBelgiuminWorldWarII,MagritteremainedinBrussels,whichledtoa
breakwithfellowartistAndreBreton.AfterthefalloutwithBreton,ReneMagrittebrieflyadoptedacolorful,
painterlystylein194344,aninterludeknownashis"RenoirPeriod",asareactiontohisfeelingsofalienation
andabandonmentthatcamewithlivinginGermanoccupiedBelgium.Duringthistime,Magrittesupported
himselfthroughtheproductionoffakepaintingofVanGogh,Picasso,andPaulCezannethisventurewaslater
takenoverbyhisbrotherPaulMagritte.

ReneMagrittestayedinBrusselsfortheremainderofhislife.Duringthemajorityofhiscareer,hiswork
followedasurrealiststyle,andheveryrarely,ifever,strayedawayfromthisform.Muchoftheworkhecreated
depictedsimilarscenes,andrecurringthemes.Someofhisfavoriteswerefloatingrocks,orcreatingapainting
withinapainting,andhealsousedmanyinanimateobjects,withinahumanfigure,creatingthedistinctstyles
whichotherartistsdidnot.
Duringthecourseofhiscareer,ReneMagrittewouldalsousefamouspaintings,whichwerecreatedbyother
artists,toputhisownsurrealisttwistonit.Oneoftheworkshedid,wasrecreateTheBalcony(apieceafterthe
masterpiceofthesamename,byEdouardManet),andinthispiecehereplacedthefiguresthatwereinthe
image,withcoffins.This,wasonewayforMagrittetoshowcasehisstyle,andtocreateauniquedesign,forcing
viewersofhispieces,tolookoutsideofthenorm,andfocusonthedistinctivefeatureswhichwerenot
originallypresent.
Alongthesimilarlines,andwithafocusonthesurrealiststylewhichhestayedtrueto,duringhiscareer,Rene
Magrittebegantoworkonsculpturesatalaterpartofhiscareeraswell.Hehadaplayfulandprovocativesense
ofhumor,whichworkedintomanyofthepieceswhichhecreated,andwhichbecamesomeofhismostwell
knownpiecesthroughoutthecourseofhiscareer.Onesuchexampleofthisistheseriesofpipepaintingswhich
hecreated.Thefascinationhehadwithaparadoxicalworld,isclearlyseenwhenyouviewtheentireseriesasa
wholepiece,ratherthanviewingtheimagesontheirown.
AlthoughinrecentyearsmanyoftheworkscreatedbyReneMagrittehavebeenonexhibit,duringthecourse
ofhiscareerhealsohadcertainfeaturesexhibitedinBrussels,aswellasaroundtheworld.In1936,oneexhibit
washeldinNewYorkCity,andfollowingthis,tworetrospectiveexhibitswerealsoheld.Onewasin1965,at
theMuseumofModernArt,andasecondwasheldin1992,attheMetropolitanMuseumofArt.

Notonlywereanumberofartistsintriguedby,andinfluencedbytheworkReneMagrittecreated,butpopular
culture,andtheartworldingeneral,wereextremelyinfluencedbyhiscreative,anduniqueabilitytotake
somethingsoordinary,yetmakeviewersofhispiecesseesomethingcompletelydifferent.Hisabilitytopresent
figuresinasuggestive,yetquestioningmanner,madehisworkextremelydesirable,especiallyduringthe
1960s.Infact,muchofhisworkhasbeenplagiarizedandusedinbooks,printads,andothermanners,dueto
thedistinctstyle,andtheinabilityofartiststocreateinasimilarmanner.
Althoughhediedin1967,ofpancreaticcancer,muchoftheworkofReneMagritteisstillondisplaytoday,in
hishometown,andaroundtheworld.Notonlydidheintroduceanewstyle,hewasaleaderinthesurrealist
style.And,hebroughtanentirelynewwayoflookingatart,withthepaintings,aswellassomeofthe
sculptureswhichhecreated,duringthecourseofhiscareer.
