Missionary Lesson Outlines

PLEASE CHANGE THE FILE NAME BY ADDING YOUR NAME AND SECTION BEFORE UPLOADING

Your assignment is to create a master lesson outline based off the full lesson outline contained in Preach
My Gospel. Using the template below, you are to add two additional aspects to the pre-made lesson outline.
First you need to read each section of the Preach my Gospel lesson.
Next are required to read AND mark each of the scriptures recommended in the Scripture Study box
connected with each principle of the missionary discussion (not just the ones contained in the lesson outline). If
you do not answer yes I will assume you did not read them.
Next you need to create a list of questions for each sub-principle to assess an investigators understanding. You
do not have to have a question for every possible doctrine in the sub-principles but make sure to cover the major
ones the ones you feel it is important for an investigator to know.
You will then need to explain how you would teach the principle to an investigator with little knowledge of the
gospel. List some specific teaching methods you might use to teach these principles such as; read scriptures,
summarize, ask questions, testify, use visual aids, etc. Remember: detailed / meaningful / appropriate.
You will be graded using the rubric below. Notice that to receive full credit or an A, your work needs to rise
above that typically done by students hence it needs to be done very well.
For an example of how to do this please view the examples contained on Learning Suite.

PROJECT SCORING RUBERICK How your project will be scored.

The Plan of Salvation

I read AND marked each of the scriptures recommended in the Scripture Study box connected with each principle of the
Gospel of Jesus Christ Lesson in Preach My Gospel (not just the ones contained in this lesson outline): Yes / No (Bold one )
Pre-Earth Life: Gods Purpose and
Plan for Us
1.

God is our Heavenly Father, and

we are His children (see Acts 17:1634;
Hebrews 12:9).
2.
God has a plan for our happiness.
Jesus Christ is central to that plan.
3.
Gods plan of happiness makes it
possible to return to His presence (see
Moses 1:39).
4.
Our eternal progression depends
on how we use our agency (see 2 Nephi
2:2729).

What relation do we have with God?

What is Gods plan for us and who does it revolve around?
Because of the Plan of Salvation we can do what?
What gift from God enables us to choose to use the Plan of
Salvation?
(believer in bible) Ask the investigator where they think they came
from. Explain that our individual had to come from somewhere, and
explain that God is our Father in Heaven. Read Galatians 1:4.
Explain that in the Bible it is stated many times we are Gods
children.
Ask the investigator if they really believe in God. Ask them why
they think God cares so much about us. Read Genesis 1:27 and
explain that God created us in his image, and we are his children.
Bear testimony that God really is our Father in Heaven, and when
we pray and talk to God we are talking to a loving Father.
Ask the investigator if they are perfect. Explain that you arent
perfect either, so how can we be good in the eyes of God? Explain
that through Jesus Christ we can fulfill Gods plan for us. Bear
testimony that Jesus Christ is the center of the plan for us.
Show the Mormon message The Mediator. Explain that we arent
perfect, and so through Jesus Christ we can be forgiven of our
imperfections in the sight of God.
Read Moses 1:39. Ask the investigator what they think eternal life
means. Explain that it is being forever in the presence of God, and
as the scripture states, any Father would want their children to come
home. Emphasize that it is only through Jesus Christ that we can
return home, because we need someone else to pay our sins for us,
because no unclean thing can be before God.
Read the parable of the prodigal son. Ask the investigator how they
feel when they are away from their family. Explain that God wants
us to return to him, and we can through his Plan of Salvation. Bear
your testimony in the Plan of Salvation that we can have hope to be
perfected through Christ.
Explain to the investigator that agency is the freedom to choose.
Ask the investigator what would happen if we didnt have agency,
and maybe give some modern day examples of peoples that dont
have freedom to choose in the world, like during slavery in the U.S.
Ask the investigator if the last time they did something wrong, that
they knew that they were doing something wrong. Explain that one
of Gods gifts to us was this freedom to choose and know right from
wrong, and that it is essential for us to choose rather than be forced
to because of what will come in heaven.
Read Moses 4:28. Clarify that Heavenly Father said that we were
like him knowing good from evil, and being able to act on it.
Explain that without this blessing we cant every progress, because
we would be stuck listening to others and not acting for ourselves.
Bear my testimony of the importance of agency and progression.
I read (not scanned) the entire section: Yes / No (Bold one )
Who created the earth, and why did they create it?
Ask the investigator how they think the world was created. If they

Christ created the earth (see Hebrews

1:13).

Agency and the Fall of Adam and Eve

Adam and Eve were created in Gods
image (see Genesis 1:2627).
2.
In the Garden of Eden they were
innocent and lived in Gods presence.
3.
Because they partook of the
forbidden fruit, they were cast out of the
garden (see Moses 4:1931). This is
called the Fall.
4.
They became mortal, were able to
have children, and were also subject to
sin and death (see 2 Nephi 2:2225;
Moses 5:11).

think it was by science, explain that God uses science to create.

Explain that Jesus Christ created this earth and all of the creatures
on it as a place for us to come down to receive bodies and be tested.
Read Moses 2:1.
Ask the investigator by what process did animals and plants and
this earth and all of the elements get made. Explain that it was
through Jesus Christ, who made this earth so that we could live on
it. Use an example that it would be very unlikely for an explosion of
random words and phrases to create a dictionary, and even more
unlikely for an explosion to create the pages and ink that make up
the words and phrases. Bear my testimony that Christ had a hand in
the creation of all things, and that he made this earth for us as a time
of testing to see if we can follow by faith on his name.

Who were Adam and Eve? Who did they look like?
What were Adam and Eve like in the Garden of Eden?
What happened when Adam and Eve partook of the forbidden fruit,
and what is that event called?
What were the consequences of leaving the Garden of Eden?
Read 1 Genesis: 26-31. Explain that Adam and Eve were created in
Gods image, and we are his children. Bear testimony that prophets
and apostles have seen the Lord and have testified that they are
personages who look like us. Can read out of Joseph Smith History
or the brother of Jareds account of seeing God.
Clarify that the investigator understands that we are children of
God. Draw a parallel to our parents here on earth. Ask the
investigator if they have ever been able to tell that a child is
someones kid. Explain that just like how children look like their
parents, we look like ours. God created us in his own image. Bear
my own testimony that God looks exactly how we do, and that we
are striving to become like him.
Ask the investigator what life would be like without knowledge of
good or evil. Explain that this is how Adam and Eve lived,
innocently without any knowledge of good things or bad things.
Read Moses 2:26-31.
Draw a comparison to a little child. Little children dont have a
knowledge of good or evil in the beginning, so they need their
parents help to guide them along life. This is how Adam and Eve
were in the Garden of Eden. They were like little children, who
lived in the presence of God but didnt realize what was good vs.
evil, they just existed.
Ask the investigator what they think a fall is. Explain that Adam
and Eve fell from a higher state into one where there is physical
death and spiritual death, which is separation from God. Read
Moses 4:19-31 and explain that because they violated Gods
commandment, and became like gods, they couldnt stay in the
garden, because of the tree of life, which if they partook they would
become like God but without the experience or wisdom that God
has.
Ask the investigator what they do when they have one of their
children or colleges disobey. There has to be a consequence, and the
consequence for Adam and Eve for disobeying God was to leave
the Garden of Eden. Make sure to emphasize that this was part of
Gods plan for us, not a mistake by Eve. Bear testimony of the
necessity of the fall in the plan of salvation.
Read Moses 5:11 with the investigator. Explain that God gave two
commandments to Adam and Eve in the beginning, the
commandment to multiply and replenish the earth and the

Our purpose in life is to find lasting

peace, joy, and happiness as families
and to prepare to return to live with God.
We came to the earth to be tested
(see Abraham 3:2425).
We gain a body of flesh and bones,
but we are subject to physical death.
God gives commandments. If we
obey, we are blessed. If we disobey, we
sin and receive the consequences.
All sin must be paid for, either by
ourselves or by Christ (see D&C 19:15
20).
We make choices, and we all
commit sin (see Romans 3:23).
We have experiences that bring us
happiness and also sorrow.
We cannot overcome either
physical or spiritual death without Christ.

commandment not to partake of the tree of knowledge of good and

evil. However, they had to take of the fruit in order to follow the
plan of salvation and have children and fall away from God so that
we can prove by faith that we can follow the commandments of
God. Make sure they understand that it was part of the plan, not an
accident, and that physical death now occurs because of the fall, as
well as good and bad things, like joy and sorrow.
Share a personal story of how when I didnt make my high school
soccer team, I was the lowest of the low and the saddest anyone
could ever be. However, because of that experience now every time
I play soccer for fun or competitively I feel joy of the playing.
Explain that there is an opposition in all things, and that in order to
gain true wisdom there has to be opposition and to prove ourselves
to God we have to have opposition. The opposition that came from
the fall is temporary spiritual and physical death, as well as good
and bad events and emotions. Bear testimony in the essential
opposition in our life.

What is our ultimate goal in life?

Why were we sent to this earth?
What did we receive when we were sent to this earth? How do we
exit this world we live in?
If we follow the commandments, what are two blessings we can
receive? What are two consequences we might have if we disobey
the commandments?
How is our sin paid for?
Who is perfect?
What emotions do we experience here on earth?
What is the only way we can overcome spiritual and physical
death?
Ask the investigator what they feel the purpose of life is. Listen to
what they have to say, and then explain that it isnt necessary to feel
pain or sorrow, but it is to find joy through the gospel and families.
Read 2 Nephi 2:25. Ask the investigator if they feel like this is true,
that God really does just want the best for us.
Talk about Elder Uchtdorfs talk saying that Gods purpose for us is
joy, not trial. Bear my testimony that I know that life even though it
is hard, we are supposed to find peace and joy as we live together as
families.
Use a school parable. Ask the investigator why we have tests in
school. We have tests so that the teacher can see how far we have
progressed and measure our progression. However, we also have
tests for ourselves, to provide motivation to study and learn the
subject, instead of just giving up or not learning as much as we
could. Compare this to our time on this earth. We are being tested
on this earth on the commandments that God has given us. Make it
clear to the investigator that the end goal is to live with Heavenly
Father and become like him. This means that we need wisdom and
experience that only will come from experiences that we have on
this earth, and if we pass the test we can return to God again.
Read Abraham 3:24-25. Explain that we have to be tested in order
to prove to Heavenly Father that we will follow his commandments
and be as righteous as we can. However, we are not being tested on
answers that we dont know, we are being tested to see if we apply
the answers that we do know, which is more of a test of will and

obedience. Bear my testimony that tests are good, and that the test
here on earth is one to help our eternal progression, that we can
eventually become like unto God.
Compare gaining a body to the glove and hand example. Our spirit
is our hand and the glove is the body. When we lived we God we
just were a spirit, and didnt have a body. However, when we were
born on earth we obtained a body. This is like putting on a glove
over the hand that is the spirit. This glove can be torn or ripped and
will eventually die, but our spirit will remain.
Explain that God has a body of flesh and bones. Read Doctrine and
Covenants 130: 22. It explicitly states that God has a body of flesh
and bones. We need then to obtain a body of flesh and bones to
even begin to hope to become like unto God. However, because of
the fall of Adam, we are subject to physical death.
Ask the investigator if they have ever been told off by anyone for
doing something wrong. Ask them why people correct each other.
Explain that people correct each other so that the one can get better
and more like the other. This is what God does for us. He sets us
commandments that clearly state how we should live our life to be
in accordance with how he lives his. If we follow these
commandments we are blessed. If we dont follow these
commandments we will receive the consequences of our actions,
whether or not they be here on earth or later after the resurrection.
Share a personal story. Explain how many times I have served while
I should be working on something that has a timeline, but I
eventually finished the project and was made to feel better by
serving. Explain that this is how blessing from Heavenly father
work. If we follow his commandments and do what he says, we
may not always be physically blessed but will have been blessed
spiritually by him in getting closer to him and the eternal reward of
everlasting and eternal life. Explain that when we sin we dont
necessarily receive physical or temporal consequences but that we
will definitely have consequences up in heaven after we die and
leave this earth. Invite the investigator to share an experience where
they feel they have been blessed by following the commandments
of God.
Ask the investigator about the concept of mercy and justice. Also
ask them if they have every met a completely perfect person.
Obviously they couldnt have, and so explain that no unclean thing
can return to heaven again. Read 1 Nephi 10: 21. Explain that we
cant pay completely for our sins here on earth, and so we have to
have someone else pay for our sins, or else we cannot enter into the
kingdom of heaven. Explain that Christ is that mediator, who takes
all that we can do and adds upon it until the full debt has been paid.
Christ paid through the atonement, when he felt all of the sins that
everyone has and every will commit, as well all of the experiences
that everyone has ever had, good or bad.
Show the Mormon message the Mediator. Bear my testimony
that only through Christ can we pay for all of our sins. Bear
testimony of the importance of the atonement, and maybe share a
verse in Alma 5 sharing Almas testimony of the atonement as well.
Share very clearly with the investigator how I and we all on have no
hope of ever repaying for everything on earth, and we dont want to
be repaying it up in heaven.
Ask the investigator to name some good things and some bad things
about being able to choose what we do whether it is good or bad.
Explain that we all make some good and some bad choices, it is part
of our learning experience. Share an experience of a child touching
a hot pan and getting burned. It may not have been pleasant at the
time, but that small amount of pain will help prevent a potential lot
of pain in the future if the lesson is not learned. This is what we are

meant to learn by sinning here on earth.

Read Romans 3:23. Emphasize to the investigator that every makes
mistakes, so they dont have to worry about being too much of a
sinner, as long as they rely on the lord and savior Jesus Christ and
do as much as they can, he can do the rest. Emphasize this by
bearing my testimony in the atonement and also in doing all that
you can to repay for your sins. Meet Jesus halfway there, dont wait
for him to come to you.
Ask the investigator what type of emotions they have felt. Ask them
which ones they enjoy, and which ones they dont like to have.
Explain that since the fall of Adam everyone experiences both joy
and sorrow. Emphasize that we will always find joy if we follow
Gods commandments, because we will be blessed and also feel the
spirit as we try and do good.
Share a personal example of when I was in a terrible mood. My dad
forced me to come out and help a lady move. I remember having a
bad attitude and not getting anything out of the experience. Contrast
that with when I was feeling like going to help organize donations
while I had a school project was a waste of time. However, I went
and still remember the feeling that I had. This shows that even when
we do what is right, we have to have selfless attitudes and have the
right motivation. Bear testimony that we all have highs and lows
but that through the gospel we can receive joy.
Ask the investigator what they think spiritual death is. Explain that
is it separation from God, and that occurred when Adam and Eve
left the Garden of Eden. We also had physical death as a
consequence of Adam and Eves actions. We know that to return to
God we need to be cleansed of our sins and have a body of flesh
and bone. To overcome both we need Jesus Christs help. Spiritual
death can be overcome by the atonement of Christ. Physical death is
overcome by Christs resurrection, when his body was restored to a
perfect frame after he died. All men and women will be resurrected
and conquer physical death, as it is part of our gift coming to this
world.
Read 1 Corinthians 15: 21-23. Explain that without Christ we
couldnt conquer death or sin. Explain that Christ was prepared
from the pre-earth life when he said send me. Bear my testimony
of the unobtainable gratitude we owe Christ and how he is our
loving older brother and savior from spiritual death and physical
death.
I read (not scanned) the entire section: Yes / No (Bold one )

The Atonement
1.

Because Jesus Christ overcame

physical death, we will all be resurrected
(see Alma 11:4143).
2.
Through Christs Atonement we
can become clean from sin so that we
can return to live in Gods presence (see
2 Nephi 9:89).
3.
Christ will forgive our sins as we
have faith in Him, repent, receive
baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost,
and endure to the end.

1.
2.
3.

How are we able to overcome physical death?

What does the atonement enable us to do?
What do we have to do in order for Christ to forgive our sins?

Use the story of the hand and the glove again. Explain that the
glove is our body, and the hand is our spirit. After death the glove
and the hand separate, and without the atonement they would be
separated forever. However, with the atonements power, the glove
is restored to a perfect form and reunited with the hand again.
Ask the investigator what they think happens after we die. Explain
that we will be resurrected because Jesus was resurrected. Explain
that is it part of the blessings that we will receive from choosing to
come down to earth and receive a body. Bear my testimony of the
resurrection and of the prophets who bore witness of the nail prints
in Jesuss hands and feet.
Review with the investigator what spiritual death is. Ask the
investigator to share with you a time when they felt in darkness or
spiritually dead, or if that doesnt feel right, explain a time when I

did. When I was in junior high I stopped having the correct

motivation and desire in the church, and I stopped caring about the
gospel. Those were the darkest and most depressing years of my life
so far, just because I wasnt following the gospel or using the
atonement to repent of my sins, so that I could eventually return to
Gods presence.
Draw a comparison with spiritual death and kids being at school.
The kids want to return home, and the parents want to see the kids
as well. That is how God is, and the only way we can is the bus that
takes the kids home, which is Jesus Christ. However, the bus wont
just pick the kids up, the kids have to walk to the bus. Compare this
to Christ and us as the kids, who need to do everything we can to
use the atonement in our life in order for us to travel home to our
Heavenly Father.
Read 2 Nephi 31 with the investigator to go over the doctrine of
Christ. Explain that we have to meet Christ halfway to use the
atonement, and clarify that grace of God alone isnt enough to save
us, we have to be willing to work for it. Go over the fact that we
need to participate in saving ordinances, such as baptism, the laying
on of hands to give us the gift of the Holy Ghost, and repent and
endure to the end following the commandments and trying our best.
Read Press On by Elder Wirthlin. Explain that though Christ died
for us, we need to do stuff as well in order to be forgiven. We cant
just beg and be given food, we have to work for it. Emphasize
enduring to the end as a most essential part of utilizing the
atonement. After repenting we cant just go on doing the same stuff
over and over, we have to try and change and always be getting
better. Bear my testimony in the truth of enduring to the end and the
blessings we will get from enduring well.

3.

What will happen eventually to everyone on this earth when they

get old?
Where do our spirits go after death?
What are the two types of states we will live in in the spirit world?
Ask the investigator how they feel about death. If they are afraid of
death, explain to them that everyone dies, and that though it may be
painful Jesus felt everything that we ever will. Also explain that
death is just another beginning of a journey, and that death is not the
end. Bear my testimony of death being the gateway to resurrection,
not the end.
Ask the investigator if they have ever heard of anyone not dying.
Explain that everyone has to die, it is part of the transition from an
imperfect state to a perfect state. Bear my testimony that death is
just another step in the overall plan of salvation.
Read Alma 40: 11. Explain that the period between death and
resurrection is called the spirit world. Explain that it is a transitory
state where how we feel now on earth is how we will feel in the
spirit world. Emphasize that there will be no difference in
temptations or in the way we think, that we wont all of a sudden
gain a testimony of Christ.
Explain that there has to be a period of time between death and
resurrection and judgement, because there are many people that
have died before that havent been resurrected. Explain that this is a
place where our spirits go and that it doesnt change how we think
or who we are. Bear my testimony in the spirit world how it doesnt
change who we are.
Read with the investigator Elder Condies talk about the Saviors
ministry in the Spirit World. Explain that while we are there, we are
to minister as well. Ask the investigator if they think that the spirit
world will be different than the world now. Explain that it wont be,

The Resurrection, Judgment, and

Immortality
1.

Our spirits and bodies will be

reunited in the resurrection (see Alma
11:4245; 40:23).
2.
We will return to Gods presence to
be judged according to our works and
desires.
3.
If we have repented, we will
receive mercy.

Eternal life is a gift of God given to
those who fully obey the gospel of Jesus
Christ (see D&C 14:7).

and that people who are unhappy here because they dont have the
gospel will be unhappy there, and people that have the gospel will
be in a state of paradise in the spirit world.
Read Alma 40: 12-14. Expound off of the doctrine it gives that
people will either be in a state of happiness or a state of misery
depending on what we did here on earth. Bear my testimony in the
importance of taking ahold of the gospel here in this life rather than
waiting.

What happens at resurrection?

What happens at Judgement?
What are the consequences of true repentance?
What do the righteous receive as a reward?
Using the hand and glove lesson, explain that our hand and the
glove, our spirit and our body, will be reunited again at resurrection,
and that our body will be in a perfect state, a body of flesh and
bones.
Read Alma 11: 43. Ask the investigator how they would feel to
receive a body without faults, such as a body without diseases or
blemishes, or any muscles problems or bone problems. Bear my
testimony in the importance of receiving a perfect body, and testify
that I wont undervalue this gift.
Ask the investigator how they think we will be judged on
judgement day. Explain that Jesus knows the thoughts and intents of
our hearts, and has also suffered through all that we have suffered,
and so is a perfect judge for us.
Share a personal story. Explain how I have been judged by others,
whether on a day to day basis or in an event like a tryout. Explain
that it cant really be fair because it is just based on performance,
not the inside or circumstance. Bear my testimony that I am grateful
for Christ as my judge, who knows exactly who I am and how I
ended up like what I am.
Show The Merciful Obtain Mercy Mormon Message. Explain
that in order to obtain mercy we need to stop doing what we are
doing wrong and try and change. Explain to the investigator that we
can only receive mercy if we showed mercy and if we followed the
correct steps to repentance.
Share a personal story about my parents disciplining me when I
dont forgive my siblings when I have just been forgiven by my
parents. Compare it to the parable of the king and the servant,
where the king forgives the servant of a huge debt and the servant
doesnt forgive his fellow servant for a few pence. Explain that we
must repent and also show mercy to obtain mercy in the last day.
Ask the investigator what they feel the best reward could be if they
made it to heaven. Explain that we will live forever in eternal joy
and happiness with our father in heaven, and we can do that if we
fully obey the doctrines of Christ. Bear my testimony of the
importance of families and how awesome it will be to live eternally
with our Father in Heaven.
Read Doctrine and Covenant 14:7. Explain that we must repent,
endure to the end, be baptized, and receive the gift of the Holy
Ghost to have eternal life. Emphasize the importance of following
the example of our savior Jesus Christ, and maybe read some 3
Nephi 11 to the investigator to show an example of how Christ

How is it decided what our rewards shall be?

Who will receive the celestial kingdom?
Who will receive the terrestrial kingdom?
Who will receive the telestial glory?
Ask the investigator how they think we should receive our
rewards. Explain that in heaven it is based on how we acted with
what information and circumstances we had on this earth. Bear my
testimony that the judgement will be fair because Christ felt all that
we have, and that if on this earth we can align our desires with God
we will be in a good spot during judgement.
Read Doctrine and Covenants 137: 9. Compare rewards based on
work and desire to rewards in life, such as in a career. Ask the
investigator if this seems fair to them. Explain that Christ will be
the perfect judge because he knows our desires, our knowledge, and
all of the work we have ever done.
Read Doctrine and Covenants 76: 50-70. Explain that the Celestial
kingdom is the highest kingdom and the kingdom in which the
whole Godhead resides, and that only the followers and believers in
Christ reside here. Here they have the potential to become as God
himself.
Compare the Celestial kingdom to the Sun. It is bright above
compare, so bright one cant look at it. The glory and happiness
found in the Celestial kingdom are bright beyond compare, and
only the righteous who accepted the gospel can live there, and
become like unto God.
Read Doctrine and Covenants 76: 75 and 79. Define the terrestrial
kingdom as the kingdom of almost, the kingdom in which the
people go who were good but didnt receive or follow the doctrines
of Christ. This could include the people that had the gospel but
didnt follow it.
Ask the investigator which is brighter, the moon or the sun. Explain
that the terrestrial kingdom has the brightness of the moon to the
sun compared to the celestial kingdom, but is still greater than the
stars. Explain that people who dont accept or dutifully follow the
gospel but are still good will go here.
Ask the investigator where they think the remaining people will go.
Explain they will go to the telestial kingdom. Explain that the
people that go here are the people who sin and dont repent, but still
came to the earth and so will receive a reward.
Compare the stars to the sun and the moon. Although they are not
nearly as bright, they are brighter than the earth. Compare this to
the telestial kingdom and all of the other kingdoms. Bear my
testimony of the 3 kingdoms and my desire to go to the one that will
bring me the most happiness, the Celestial kingdom.
