This year the Home Tour comes to the North end of Mount Baker!
Visit homes that span a full century of home building in our
historic community: a mid-century modern home from the 1950s,
a splendid 1970s home, eco-cottages built in the 2000s, and two
original Charles Dose homes.
Guests may walk the tour, or use our free shuttle transportation
between homes. Tours run continuously from 10:00 AM to 4:00
PM, no appointment necessary. After the tour, please come to
the Clubhouse to enjoy complimentary tea, coffee and cookies or
purchase a festive mimosa. On Home Tour day the Clubhouse also
hosts the annual Arts & Crafts Fair featuring local artists - a great
place to shop for unique holiday gifts.
The Home Tour is the largest fundraiser for the Community Club.
Donations help make other events possible, like Day in The Park
and the Community Potluck. We need your support. Please join us
on December 5. You wont want to miss this tour!

ITS TIME TO RAISE THE ROOF

Craig Norberg has been pounding the pavement and knocking on

doors in our neighborhood asking home owners to be a part of the
Mount Baker Home Tour, an historic and beloved event. Craig has
served as the lead organizer for the 2013 and 2015 Home Tours and
Arts & Crafts Fair.

Our one-hundred-year-old Clubhouse is in dire need of many

repairs and upgrades, most importantly replacement of the roof and
the oil-fired boiler. We must literally raise the roof for the Clubhouse!

A native of Seattles north end, Craig grew up in Laurelhurst. (I)

always recognized Mount Baker as one of the most sophisticated
neighborhoods in Seattle. This is Olmstead design! Craig exclaimed.
Good design contributes to an extraordinary experience, and in our
case, a beautiful neighborhood. Mount Baker is a really special place.
When Craig attended his first Home Tour in 2011 he was happily
surprised to find Norberry Tile jobs in several of the homes. He
took that as a sign and decided to help organize the next Home Tour.
The 2013 Home Tour coincided with the centennial of the Mount
Baker Community Clubhouse. Craig wanted homes that year to reflect turn of the century architecture, so he chose only homes built
the same year as the Clubhouse. Funny lesson learned, said Craig,
most hundred year old homes have the same floor plan!

Craigs appreciation for good design carries over into his profession
- and passion - as owner of Norberry Tile & Plumbing located on the
31st Avenue ridge in Mount Baker. Step into Craigs studio and you

tile work and selection of plumbing fixtures. There are many truly
unique pieces. No more white tile, says Craig of his efforts to gently
nudge customers toward more artistic tile choices. Although if you

This years Home Tour will include homes built throughout our
neighborhoods history, from turn of the century to the 2000s.
Ask Craig what his ideal tour of Mount Baker homes would be, and
he cant stop listing one glorious home after another. Hes an architectural history buff and knows many of the neighborhoods gems by
heart. Craig was actually planning to step down as Co-Chair for the
Home Tour, but got so excited listing off his dream homes that he
was hooked for another year. Lucky us!

Fundraising for this project began with an incredible $100,000

large project grant from the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods.
Now we must match the grant with monetary and labor donations.

How long am I a member? As long as you live, work or attend
school in Mount Baker.
How do I join? No need to apply. Membership is automatic.
What do members get? You are invited to every neighborhood
event we host. Members receive a discount on clubhouse rentals.

Craig has helped organize the Home Tour - making it one of the
most anticipated events of the year! The Mount Baker Home Tour
and Arts & Craft Fair is a giant undertaking. As Programs Director
of MBCC, I am personally thankful to Craig for working with home
owners to create an interesting tour of homes and celebrating the full
100 year history of architecture in Mount Baker.
Besides the neighborhoods architecture and design, when asked if
there was anything else he loved about Mount Baker, Craig revealed,
Mount Baker happens to have the perfect incline for my rollerblading style.

MIND THE GAP: A MOUNT BAKER ART INSTALLATION

Many Mount Baker residents may be unaware of our neighborhoods rich history. As part of the Seattle Design Festival this past
fall, Mount Baker resident and designer, Noah Jeppson temporarily
transformed the pedestrian overpass (at Martin Luther King Way
South and Rainier Avenue South) into an outdoor gallery of inspirational neighborhood stories.
For two weeks Noahs installation, entitled Mind the Gap,
explored a literal bridge connecting historic Mount Baker to the
urban development around the light rail station. The installation
also addressed equity gaps in accessibility, infrastructure, and culture that frequently follow transit-oriented development in historic
neighborhoods.

The Kindiependent Kids Rock concert series is back at Mount

Baker Community Club.
Kindiependent is a collective of like-minded musicians passionate
about cultivating a vibrant kids and family music scene in the Pacific Northwest. Two Saturdays a month, December through April,
Kindiependent bands perform rock concerts for kids right here at
our historic Mount Baker Community Clubhouse (2811 Mount
Rainier Drive South).
The Kindiependent bands are: Caspar Babypants, Recess Monkey,
The Not-Its!, Johnny Bregar, The Harmonica Pocket, and Brian
Vogan & His Good Buddies.
Full series passes are on sale now! A full series pass gives a family of

RECIPE: MAMAS EASIEST SQUASH SOUP

Its cold and wet out there! Come inside and have a big bowl of
rich, nourishing, delicious squash soup! Rich in vitamins, fiber and
healthy fats, this soup is a great choice for anyone making a healthy
shift in their diet, and especially pregnant and nursing mamas to
support babys healthy nerve development. Enjoy!

STEP 3: Add coconut milk and stir.

VARIATIONS: Add fresh or dry thyme, sauted diced onion and

squash(es) on a shallow baking dish and bake 45-50 minutes, or

Do you like to write? The View is looking for volunteer writers. No previous experience required. Candidates should be at least one of the following: 1) A neighbor in Mount Baker, 2) Someone who enjoys writing, or
3) Someone who cares about the Mount Baker community. Contributing
writers are welcome, but not required, to attend editorial meetings, which
take place three times a year.

In Seattles rainy, cold months, it can be tempting to glue ourselves

to the couch for the winter. But, staying active will make you feel
better than binge-watching the latest show. Exercise can elevate
mood, increase muscle tone and prevent weight gain.
One way to stay active is to incorporate small changes into your
daily routine. For example, you might start your day with a short
walk. Try going with a buddy for encouragement and support.
Another way to stay active is by making fitness fun. Take advantage of the skiing and snowboarding nearby, or join a local walking group to keep yourself motivated. Indoor activity can also be
exciting. Try something new, like a dance class or indoor soccer or
bouldering. Local fitness studios also offer fun activities, like the
free monthly Fitness is Fun event at Pulse Fitness.
Regardless of the activity, exercise will release endorphins, helping
you feel better and more excited about staying active throughout
the winter.
