Introduction:
Most products involve movement of parts for operation. It is therefore necessary for the
product designer to understand the role of mechanisms in product design and apply this
knowledge during detailed design of products
Problem statement
Part A 30 marks
The performance of products with electronic controls is more reliable compared to
products with manual controls
Do you agree with this statement? Prepare a debate on this topic in 3 pages. Marks will be
given for clarity on subject, appropriate case studies with examples and conclusion.
Part B 30 marks
Select a physical mechanism of a product in consultation with module leader. Study and
understand the working of the mechanism, actuator used, input and output motions,
mechanism elements used to obtain motion transformation, and answer all sub sections in
Part B
B1. Describe the working of the mechanism and its role in the product with pictures
B2. Analyse all the mechanism elements used and how they are connected to obtain
motion transformation with pictures
B3. Generate drawings with dimensions showing the position of the output mechanism
element and other connecting elements for various limiting positions of the actuator
Part C 30 marks
Select a physical mechanism which is different from that used in the product selected in Part
B, but used on another product for similar application, and answer all sub sections
In Part C
C1. Describe the working of the mechanism and its role in the product with pictures
C2. Analyse all the mechanism elements used and how they are connected to obtain
motion transformation with pictures
C3. Prepare and provide drawings with dimensions showing the position of the output
mechanism element and other connecting elements for various limiting positions of the
actuator
NOTE:
Digital drawings with dimensions (in .dwg format) of the selected mechanism are to be
prepared by the student using appropriate CAD software such as CATIA for section B3 and
C3 described below:
