Year 2 Newsletter

January 2016
Welcome back! I hope you had a lovely Christmas. I would like to take this
opportunity to congratulate the children on a wonderful performance of this
years Nativity. They really were bright, shining stars.
This half term we are joined by Miss Finlay, a trainee teacher who is excited to
be working with us. Our topic is Our Wonderful World! We will be learning
about Qatar in the United Arab Emirates, learning about the contrasting
geographical features and about life there. We will be setting up a link with a
school in Qatar and learning about Islamic culture.

Literacy
In Literacy, we will be reading and writing play scripts, poems and
stories from other cultures. We will also be learning about
persuasive writing and creating our own slogans and adverts.
Ways to help
Read with your child every night and sign their Reading Record
If you havent already, register your child at the local library
and visit regularly encourage them to take out books that
interest them.

Maths
In Maths, we will be learning to compare numbers and to know what each
unit represents in 2-digit and some 3-digit numbers. We will be measuring
mass using scales to help us to bake a cake. We will then learn about
symmetry and different features of 2D and 3D shapes. Then we will learn
how to work out the total cost of a set of objects and how to calculate
and give change. At the end of the half-term, we will be learning to
multiply and divide which will help us to solve multiplication and division
problems.

Encourage your child to practise their times tables.
Make use of opportunities for your child to tell the time (e.g. if your child has breakfast at 8
oclock, practice telling the time on your clock while they are having breakfast).

Science
In Science we will be learning more about where different animals live and how
they survive in their habitats. We will be looking at desert animals to link with
our geography topic about Qatar. We will also be learning about mini-beasts and
investigating where they like to live.

Creative Curriculum
Geography We will be learning about Qatar and how it is different from Preston. We will
explore the geographical features of Qatar (e.g. desert) and how the weather is different.
Computing We will be learning how to use Scratch to program animations.
RE We will be learning about Islam and why religious rituals are important to Muslims.
Art We will be learning about Ilana Yahav and creating our own pictures with sand.
PE- This will be on a Wednesday and Thursday each week. Please make sure that your
childs PE kit is in school.
French We will be learning the names of different countries.
Music We will be learning to play tuned and untuned instruments. We will also have a go
at composing our own music.
PSHE We will be learning about British Values and our roles as citizens of the world.

Homework
Children will be sent homework (either Maths or Literacy) every Friday. This must be
returned to Mrs Nicholson by the following Wednesday. Spellings will also be sent out
every Friday for a Spelling Test the following Friday.
