DISCUSSION

A. DISCUSSION
The researcher want to elaborate the result of research findings that
encompass two research questions; students attitude and students behaviour
towards English in speaking class.
Students Attitude towards English
Gardner (1980) in Tamimi (2009) stated that attitude as the sum total of
mans instinctions and feelings, prejudice or bias, preconceived notions, fears,
threatsand convictions about any specified topic. According to Likert defined the
term attitude as an inference which is made on the basis of a complex of beliefs
about the attitude object. Ajzen (2005) wrote, attitude is a disposition to repons
favorably or unfavorably to an object, person, institution, or event. Attitude is a
hypothetical construct that, being inaccessible to direct observation, must be
inferred from measureable responses.
Based on the result of questionnaire and semi structured interview,
those revealed that the students of English Education Program had positive
attitude in term of cognitive aspect. Referring to Gajalaksmi study on International
Jurnal of scientific and research for High school students attitude towards
learning English language. Gajalaksmi (2009) emphasized the cognitive aspect
of attitude involves the beliefs of the language learners about the knowledge that
they received and their understanding in the process of language learning. Ajzen
(2005) adds, cognitive responses is responses that reflect perceptions of, and
thoughts about, the attitude object. Thus, a person who holds strong beliefs that
positively valued outcomes will result from performing the behaviour will have
positive attitude. The researcher could say if the students think and have beliefs
that English is a language rescuer for future. She/he already has cognitive aspect
of attitude.
Based on the questionnaire result. The researcher found as many as 33
students (100%) had positive attitude by choosing SA (strongly Agree) and A
(Agree) if English is an important lingua franca in globalisation era (Table
1)knowledge of English offers looking for good job (Table 3) and they learn
English in order to master English (Table 5).

Further, the cognitive aspect is investigated through inteview. The

researcher interviewed for 13 participant on June 5 th, 2015. The result showed the
participants have positive attitude by 7 participants revealed that they considered
English was important and

International language, English was as medium

language when communicating with foreigner by face to face or social media and
also English was a science for them.In addition, for 6 participants also stated by
mastering of English, it makes them easy to know the world, makes them easy
good job and share it to each other
My opinion English is International language. First, English is
knowledge, when we go to abroad,we never know our destiny. Second,
English as mediator for communicating with English Native Speaker
directly or through social.(Sakura-Interview 1-CaoA)
English is important. Because, it is for my self, it makes me easy to get
job like at Bank or as a tour guide. Moreover many computer instruction
and some clues in the airport used English. In addition, we know the
world and can share to others by English. (Tulip-Interview1-CaoA)
Sure. It is very important.English is being the world. If we meet
philippine or vietnam, english is enough. Then, if we will cooperate with
foreigner no need English interpreter. (Flower-Interview1-CaoA)
Yes....English makes me to get job and i do love English Native
Speaker. They seem cool and great (Magnolia-Interview1-CaoA)
Of course. It is vey important. English is not only to share out but to my
self in the future. In this period English is one skill needed to get job.
(Dahlia-Interview1-CaoA)
The participants also showed that they had positive attitude in term of
affective aspect of attitude. Gajalakshmi (2013) stated that effective aspect of
attitude can help the learners to express whether they like or dislike the objects
or surrounding situations. Ajzen (2005) cited affective responses is responses
from which attitudes can be inferred has to do with evaluations of, and feelings
towards, the attitude object. McKenzie (2010) adds, emotional aspect which
known as effective aspect of attitude is component of attitude to involve an
emotional response to the attitudinal object or feel excited when someone hears
plans for the pacts (emotion), e.g a love of English Literature. So, when the
students like to imitate native speaker or like to hear English song. They may
have affective aspect of attitude.

The questionnaire result came up that students of English Education

Program had positive attitude in term of affective aspect by choosing SA (strongly
agree) and A (Agree) as many as 33 students (100%) if they were proud of
English (Table 7), they like speake English (Table 9) and They felt happy when
they speake English to their friends (Table 11)
In addition, the researcher also found that 13 participants have positive
attitude in interview in term of affective aspect.
A participant enjoyed imitating the lecturer or video native speaker of
English, 3 participants were hobby to English.Meanwhile, 3 participants felt proud
of English as their study prgram and considered English was cool. Then, 6
participants loved chatting with English Native Speaker in social media and liked
English as the language of computer instruction in part.
I do.i really love English.Sometimes when i had video of English Native
Speaker, i like for imitating, i dont care my mouth, expression. English
make me crazy. I think improving the English pronounciation, just it.
(Sakura-Interview 2-AaoA)
Sure. I felt good sensation for English.(Flower-Interview2-AaoA)
Yes. When i speak English, i look like a great person. (Canna-Interview
2-AaoA)
I really love English (Ixora-Interview2-AaoA)

Meanwhile,in the conative statement, most of participants showed that

they had negative attitude in term of conative aspect. Mckenzie (2010) stated te
conative component of an attitude refers to the individuals predisposition to
bahave in certain ways,e.g..,attending or not attending English language classes.
Ajzen (2005) adds, conative responses is behavioral inclinations,
intentions, commitments, and actions with respect to the attitude object. So, when
students had tendency to do some activities which related to English like they
tend to use English grammetically or they tend to speak English more in their
class it already show that they had positive attitude in term of conative aspect. On
the contrary, the students tend to had tendency above were still minimum, they
already own negative attitude in term of conative aspect.

On the questioonaire result, Most of participants tend to choose DA

( disagree) as many as 28 students or (84,84%) if they tend to use English
Gramatically (Table 13).Afterwards, as many as 23 students or 69,69% stated DA
(disagree) if they will speak English with my friend (Table 15) and 28 students or
84,84% stated DA if they will speak English in their class (Table 17) .
Further, in the conative aspect is investigated through interview to
compare and omit the hesitancy of data for (T.13-18).Then,the result of interview
showed 14 participants clearly they had desire to speak English but it was still
minimum. They revealed no group or interlocutor, was lazy and most of students
in their class did not speak English. So, their tendency to speak English and use
English grammatically were minimum.
I did. But most of students use Indonesian. So, willingness? It is still
minimum(Flower-Interview5-CnaoA)
Of course i did. But i dont have someone who want speaking English to
me. It troubled me (Magnolia.S-Iterview5-CnaoA)
Sure, if you asked me, i had. Yet, when the others said you are cocky
it losts my wish for speaking English(Sakura-Interview5-CnaoA)
I did.But i hard to do that. (Dahlia-Interview5-CnaoA)
I have, but little.(Tulip-Interview5-CnaoA)
On the other hand, the researcher found the students of English
Education Program had positive attitude in term of cognitive and affective aspect.
Meanwhile, they had negative attitude in term of conative aspect.
Students Behavior towards English in Speaking Class
Behaviourism is a scientific theory which argues that all human activity
may be reduced to behavioural unit (Mckenzie, 2010). Woollard (2010) wrote
behaviourism is a theory of animal and human learning that focuses upon the
behaviour of the learner and the change in behaviour that occurs when learning
taking places.
According to Ajzen (2005) behaviors are typically performed in a
particular context or situation appropriate. Generally speaking, people intend to
perform a behavior when they evaluate it positively, when they experience social

pressure to perform it, and when they believe that they have the means and
upportunities to do so.
On the result of observation in speaking class, the participants had
negative behavior towars English. Ajzen (2005) strengthened Inconsistency of
behavior from one occasion to another can be introduced by factors related to the
person performing the behavior.E.g mood or attentiveness. So, she/he is only
speaks English depend on mood

can be called they had negative or

inconsistency of behavior. To review, negative behavior in speaking class is seen

by students habit which rare to speak English in speaking class.
Shriffin & Scheneider (1997) adds human beings are said to be
creatures of habit; they tend to persist in doing what yhet have become
accustomed to. It is well known, with repeated performance. It can perhaps be
argued that behavioral routine or habits constitute personality traits at the level of
specific behaviors. ( Ajzen, 2005, p.88)
The researcher did observation during 3 meetings. The data observation
showed, during three meetings, when lecturer opened the lesson by greeting to
the students and checking the students attandance list. The students always
responded with present, i am Mr and when lecturer asked students who did not
come, some students statement go hometown Mr;i dont know sir;on the way
Mr;or what did she say, i forget Mr, i dont know what activity is. Based on the
result of observation data, in the opening session most of students tend to speak
Indonesian although it was simple words.
Meanwhile, when the lesson was taking place, the students of English
Education Program (in speaking class) only spoke English when reading and
delivered a received massage(showed in first meeting) and when they were
telling experience(showed in second meeting).Furthermore, in third meeting they
spoke English when they were playing of drama. But if any member of group who
forgot the concept drama, they used Indonesian.
The reseracher found students of English Education Program tend to
use English if it is any taking speaking score in the class, like sending massage by
using jigsaw(first meeting),telling experience(second meeting) and playing drama
(third meeting). On the contrary, when the lecturer did not give assignment, they
tend to use Indonesian as communication tool.

Moreover, the research was clarified through interview. The result of

interview showed that the participants tend to have negative behaviour in
speaking class. Most of participants stated that they rare to speak
English, because most of students spoke Indonesian as communication tool in
speaking class, they will be regarded as arrogant person by others and also they
spoke English depended on mood.
I speak English in my class depend on my mood. Actually good mood is
nothing. So, i rare to speak English in my class.
(Sakura-Interview6-Behavior)
I really love speaking English. But i rare speak English in my class.
Because most of students use Indonesian as communication tool and
my firend look me like an arrogant when i speaking English. ( Dahlia
interview6-Behavior)
Actually i already try speaking English in my class. But no more
response. Almost 95% they respond by speaking Indonesian. So, i rare
to speak English more. (Tulip-Interview7-Behaviour)
Indonesian is still dominant in my class. Thus, It makes me to speak
nothing.(Gazania-Interview6-Behavior)
Sorry i rare to speak up.It is not reach 30%. I really wish my firends
speak English to me. But, they speak English depend on their mood.
(Magnolia-Interview6-Behavior)
Furthermore, Based on the result of observation and interview. The
students of English Education Program had negative behavior towards English in
speaking class. It shown by their habit in speaking class, they rare to speak
English although they had been in speaking class.
In a nutshell, the students of English Education Program had positive
attitude in term of cognitive and affective aspect. Meanwhile, Most of students of
English Education Program had negative attitude in term of conative aspect.
Moreover,The students of English Education Program showed negative
behaviour towards English in speaking class. Based on the indication of students
attitude and students behaviour towards English in speaking class. Then, It
indicated most of students had problem like inconsistent between attitude and
behaviour towards the language which is being learnt by them.In other words,
There was obviously cognitive dissonance.Festinger (1959) defined Cognitive
dissonance is inconsistency between two beliefs exists when holding one belief
with holding to the other. (Ajzen, 2005, p.26)
