Whether youre a busy parent and/or working

full time, we know it can be difficult to t
learning into your life. At learndirect, we want
your learning experience to be exible.
Some of our courses and qualications give you
the option to do your learning either at home
or in one of our centres around the country.
Theyre slightly different in pace and youll get
support throughout your learning.
How can I learn?
In one of our centres

If you enrol for your qualication through one of
our centres, youll get face-to-face support from
our friendly staff. When learning in a centre,
there will be elements of online learning as part
of the qualication. In most cases youll be able
to continue your learning from home, work or
anywhere you have an internet connection.
During your learning, youll have regular
progress reviews with your tutor at your centre
(or by phone or email) to make sure youre on
track with your learning.
Learning through a centre is exible, so how
long it takes depends on your needs and
circumstances.
Through our centres you can get a
qualication in:
life skills, job seeking and work skills
everyday skills like maths, English and IT
vocational qualications*.
At work
If you want to learn on the job, we can help whether youre in work already or are looking for
a job.
Apprenticeships are work-based, so youll earn
a salary while you learn. If you dont have a job
yet, dont worry - for most subjects we can help
you nd an employer to do your Apprenticeship
with. Theyre also a great option if youre
already in employment and looking to improve
your prospects. Apprenticeships are available to
anyone aged 16 and over.

Most of your learning will be done on the job

with some elements of online learning as part
of the qualication. Your trainer assessor will
support you throughout by visiting you at work,
by phone or through interactive online support.
Apprenticeships generally take between 12
and 24 months. You can nd out more about
Apprenticeships on page 17.
We offer Apprenticeships in a wide range of
industry areas. For more detail, see our full list
on page 38.
Our Traineeships are perfect if youre aged 1624 and want to get the experience to kick start
your career and get noticed by an employer.
Youll do a placement to give you the skills
that employers are looking for and build your
condence for future jobs. Youll also have the
chance to develop skills to prepare you for
work, or an Apprenticeship, including CV writing,
interview techniques, time management and
problem solving at work.
Our vocational certicates* can be completed
more quickly. Theyre ideal if youre already
working, sponsored by an employer or doing
voluntary work or a work placement.
Youll be assessed on the day-to-day tasks you
do at work (or in a work-like setting) and you
can complete your learning from home, work,
or anywhere you have an internet connection.
To make sure youre on track with your learning,
youll have regular progress reviews with your
tutor which can be done face-to-face at one of
our centres, as well as by phone and email.
How long it takes depends on your needs and
circumstances. On average, it takes around six
to nine months to gain a vocational certicate.

Online
Whether you choose to learn in a centre or at
work, many of our courses have elements of
online learning as part of the qualication. This
means in most cases youll be able to continue
your learning from home, work, or anywhere
you have an internet connection. As you look
through this course guide this will be indicated
with the online symbol listed next to the
qualication title.
What will it cost?

A lot of our qualications wont cost you
a penny. Depending on what level you
will be working towards and your age,
your qualication could be funded by the
government, or you could be eligible for
a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan. For some
qualications, there might be a charge. See
page 34 to nd out more.
How do I know which qualication is right

for me?
Before you enrol with us, well check which type
and level of qualication you should be working
towards. If you want to complete a qualication
through your job well look at whats right
with your employer. Well also check what
qualications and skills you already have, so we
can put together the right mix of learning for
you. This means you only do the courses you
need to - so you dont have to learn what you
already know.
As well as our funded courses and

qualications, we offer a wide range of short
online courses that are available to buy from
learndirect.com. With topics covering many
aspects of work, business, ICT and all modern
languages, our short online courses will give you
instant access to new skills.

High quality care during the early years has

a lasting impact on childrens future learning
and life chances. One of the most valuable
resources that children and families have
during this time is the staff who support
them.
With our Childcare Apprenticeships, youll play a
key role in caring for young children and aiding
their development. You could work in a nursery,
pre-school, school or childrens centre.

Apprenticeship*
Our Childcare Apprenticeships give you
skills to work in a wide range of roles. The
Apprenticeship will enable you to assist as a
childcare practitioner supporting all areas of
childrens development. By progressing to the
Advanced Apprenticeship you will be able to
take on more responsibility both within your
team and for the children in your care and
you will become a fully-edged childcare
practitioner.
Your Apprenticeship will help you to develop the
skills you need to maintain childrens well-being
and provide the best environment for them
to grow in all areas: for example, socially and
emotionally.

Our Traineeships give 16 24 year-olds the
opportunity to develop workplace skills and

Dental nursing
Are you looking to get into dental nursing?

Or maybe youre one of the more than 11,000
dental nurses currently working without a
qualication?
Since 2008 dental nurses have to hold or be
working towards a qualication recognised by
the General Dental Council (GDC), but theres
a shortage of courses leading to qualications
for GDC registration. Thats where we can help our Dental Nursing Advanced Apprenticeship is
accepted for registration with the GDC.
A Dental Nursing Apprenticeship can lead to
exciting job prospects too! Research* carried
out in the dentistry sector and analysis of the
industrys future trends found that dental nurses
were the most recruited-for role in 2010/11,
with 50 per cent of dentists having recruited a
dental nurse. You could be working in doctors
surgeries, hospitals, the armed forces or working
with the community. You can also go on to
further training to become a hygienist, dental
therapist or orthodontic therapist.
Whether youre just starting out, or youre in
dental nursing but now need your qualication,

Our short online courses start from as little as
17.99 (+VAT), so you can get the skills you need
without having to spend a fortune.
It depends on the course, but many can be
completed in just a few hours. Short online
courses are provided with between 1 and 12
months access (depending on the course) to
ensure plenty of time for you to complete. You
can pace yourself and revisit your learning as
often as you like during this time.
Will I get a qualication?
Most of our online courses are not linked to
a qualication - but there are exceptions, like
our MOS certication packages, PRINCE2
certication, ECDL courses, food hygiene and
some of our professional IT courses.
What support will I get?
