Distinctions as to Purpose
By Laura Turlington

Everything is made of energy. Energy can also be called life force. Not only is everything made of energy, but everything
is made of the exact same energy. Water, fire, wind, rocks, insects, animals, humans, and planets are all built from the
same fundamental energy, the same life force. In fact everything we humans create in our lives is made from the very
same energy that created us, created the trees, created the stars. What distinguishes one creation from another is the
intent that directs the energy in one way or another. Everything we can identify in our universe, every bit of creation,
has observable qualities which result directly from the purpose of that bit of creation. We could also call this purpose
desire.

In our day to day lives, through socialization and agreement, we learn to identify certain energies as having certain char-
acteristics. We describe something as having “high quality” energy or “low quality” energy. The only real difference be-
tween the two is our interpretation of what that energy feels like. It is easiest to imagine this when we think of the en-
ergy produced by a battery. Would we ever say that the battery’s energy is good or bad? Not likely. Energy is imper-
sonal. It is life force. We may say it has a certain quality, or it can fulfill a certain purpose, or it stems from a particular
desire, but we would be hard-pressed to call it outright good or bad. The energy we experience in our day to day lives is
no more good or bad than the battery’s energy.

We make energy personal as we experience it and then judge it through our individual interpretive system. When we
make energy personal, we make it a tool of the apparently-separate small self, forming it with small self perspectives.
Small self perspectives are characterized by qualities such as fear and limitation. When we see energy as impersonal,
free of our personal projections, we experience it as the infinite wonder that it is: the life force that seeds and feeds all
creation, the expression of us as our unified, complete, infinite-selves. In the end, energy is energy is energy, and it is
only distinct as to purpose and by the desire used to direct that energy.

What opportunities do we create for ourselves when we view energy in this way; infinite and distinct only as to purpose
and desire? We create the opportunity to engage with life at a level where it cannot be influenced by habitual fear and
limitation. We live the awareness that we are completely connected to everything that there is at all times; that we are
one being with many expressions, distinguished only by the way we coalesce the energy of the universe in a given form
at a given moment. We experience miracles, or blessings, when we engage with life by directing our energy from our
heart’s desire. Blessings are the gifts we receive from the universe which acknowledge our truest nature. From this
point of view, the real blessing is the realization that the gift, in whatever form it arrives, has come to us from ourselves,
not from something outside of ourselves. The grandest blessing of all is the deep awareness that nothing is outside of
us.
