II. NARRATIVE REPORT:

Starting Over Again: Everything you need to know about
Relationships
ST Chapel, Adamson University
November 25, 2015
For the ECE students to relive their faiths, to renew their spiritual
selves and to reinforce their beliefs, AUECESS (Adamson University
Electronics Engineering Students Society) conducted its religious and fifth
activity entitled Starting Over Again: Everything you need to know about
relationships held at ST Chapel last November 25, 2015.
Starting Over Again became the participants bridge for reconnecting
and refreshing their relationships. This activity focuses on relationships not
limiting to romantic ones but also tackling relationship with friends, family
and especially to God. The good thing about holding this event is that it is a
reminder that religious practice should be incorporated within us even in
school or in each of our daily lives. In this activity, the AUECESS officers
participated in the event as well in contrast with the organizations other
activities.
The struggle that the organizations officers strived with administrating
this event was finding participants. That day started with so much stress but
ended with overflowing blessings and learning. This day planned by God
through Brother Mark Macaraeg, our recollection master from The Feast
Dasma. Our recollection talked about everything basic we needed to know
about relationships, the talks begun with self recognition, appreciation and
acceptance of strengths and weaknesses. Followed by familial essence, then
by how waiting for the perfect love story written by God would be so worth it.
The registration started early at 7:00am and ended at 8:00am.

ORIENTATION / OPENING REMARKS AND PRAYER

The recollection started off with at least 40 participants; however

this didnt break our hearts, for everything starts with small things, this
number of students gave us hope that more would come and that more
would hopefully appreciate, learn and feel the presence of God that day.
In spite of the fact that it started small, the number of people increased
dramatically as the early hours pass seeing the professors not having
classes that day. The recollection master was Brother Mark Macaraeg, a

graduate from Christ the King Mission Seminary in the year 1996. He is
famous for being a retreat master and a pro-life speaker, and for his
intelligent and emotional talks even in other schools.
First, he taught the participants what he calls the open body
position. The open body position is done by sitting upright, having your
feet in contact with the ground and having your hands in open idle
position on your lap. He also introduced three procedures to at least follow
to have a meaningful interaction. The number one represents silence, the
number two means to do the open body position and the number three
stands for listening to the one speaking in the front. He didnt want to be
strict but didnt want to have his talk bear no meaning to the other
participants.

Morning Activities

After the introductions, Brother Mark officially started the event by

opening it with a solemn prayer. He prayed for all the participants and that
they pray for him in return.
The first relationship to be talked about is the relationships between
friends. It is beneficial for individuals to engage in social relationships as it
is vital to our well-being. Study says that socially engaged adults age more
successfully. Having to choose your own friends always make a difference.
The people around an individual greatly influence ones mind. The retreat
master pointed out the importance of being socially active and for that he
asked the participants to go around and hug every person they can within
the time even if they dont know the person.

Figure 2. The first hugging scenario

He tried to raise the liveliness of the crowd by making them hooo in

unison. To further break the ice, he then made the participants massage the
person to the right and after a while return the favour. These activities made
it easier for the participants to be more comfortable with their seatmates
even if they again dont know the person.
For the last morning activity, the participants took a test where its
purpose was hidden until it was over.
The Personality Test

Each participant shall write the numbers 1 to 20 in a piece of paper

For every number, there will be four words
The participants will choose only one word from the four
Each participant should be undoubtedly honest for the test to work
Each word will have a corresponding attribute attached to it
The letter that represent for each quality will not be revealed until It
was over
The participant will list on how many S,M,P or C theyve gotten
The letter with the highest number shall be encircled
The letter with the second highest number shall be underlined
The highest number will be their given personality and the second will
be their secondary personality
The S stands for Sanguine, M for Melancholic, P for Phlegmatic and C
for Choleric

Talk 1: (Who Am I?)

He made the participants that got the most S stand. He revealed that
every personality has its own pros and cons. The Sanguine personality is the
optimistic, socially active and confident individual but a bad finisher,

forgetful and insensitive. He advised the people who got the sanguine
personality and made them appreciate their strengths and avoid their
weaknesses. Then, he made the Choleric personalities stood. Choleric people
are the ones with the most leadership quality, a direct social interaction and
always the first ones to act but they are easily angered with their little
tempers. With the same procedure, he advises them what they have to
improve and what they have to avoid for them to become better people. The
Melancholic people are often artists, perfectionists and orderly people but
negative, judgmental and jaded. They are the opposites of sanguine and it
means that embracing a little of your opposite can mean a change. The last
personality is the Phlegmatic personality. They are people who are forgiving,
adaptable to change and not easily angered but passive, unmoving and often
bullied. This personality is the opposite of the choleric personality. Like the
melancholic, learning to have a bit of what they lack will surely change their
life for the better.

Figures 3. Participants showing their delight as they realized that the personality test was accurate

The purpose of this talk was to boost self esteem, confidence and above
all, respect for oneself. It also made us embrace diversity within each other.
Participants were made to accept each other even if they are different
individuals.

Figure 4. Friends accepting each others differences

Finishing the personality test, the retreat master offered another prayer
and a song of praise before proceeding to announce a break for the
famished.

MASS

After the first talk, mass was held for the feast day of the Miraculous
Medal from 12-1. As part of the religious event, it wont be complete if the
activity doesnt have a mass. Like our traditional Roman Catholic mass, it
proceeded as the scriptures are concerned. The sermon of the priest in the
homily is usually the highlight of a mass. There were two students who
werent listening much and were reprimanded by the priest. Due to this
event, the priest opened his homily with relation to this incident. He said that
the problem with students is that they dont listen and always complain if
they dont pass. He also noticed that students of Adamson University often
look gloomy and troubled as if gravity is weighing them down two times than
ever. He noted that people tend to forget that in God, there is no big deal.
This means that people frequently succumb to their problems and make it
like it is the end of them. People forget to put everything in Gods will.

Afternoon Activities
Talk 2: Setting Goals (What am I doing and will I be able to
achieve my dreams?)
Dream boards were tackled for this talk. What exactly are dream
boards? These are boards wherein one pastes their goals in life, dreams,
wants, needs and other stuffs. Bro. Mark said that, it was a way to set our

goals in life, and to believe that God would be more than willing and able
to make it come true. We just have to wait. Also, he said that, dont dream
small, dream big and have faith that God will give it. Lastly, the talk
answers the question Is there such a thing as forever? the answer is
yes, but with God.
The retreat master opened up about his late father physically abusing
him when he was in his care. He related it with college students pursuit of
future. He said that we should value our education as our parents worked
hard for every single coin or money they give us. Another activity was
held but first he made the participants bow their heads, pray and let God
help us remember the things that left an impact to us.

Figure 5. Participants letting God help them

After allowing the Almighty to help each of the participants, they

were instructed to scatter preferably away from their friends and section
their papers into two parts. The first part will be filled with sweet words
told to them by people especially their parents that make them happy
each time they think of it. On the bottom of it, the words they want to
hear from people around them and for the second part, the painful words
that hurt them until that day. Following that, each of the participants will
find a partner and discuss the words written in their paper in turns. A lot
of the participants were emotional during this part of the activity.

Figure 6. Participants finding their own place of silence

Subsequently, the participants were guided again by Brother Mark

to accept the things that were said to them and let God into their system
as He will help each of us with our struggles. Then again, he made the
participants do their routine hug as every participant was in need of
guarantee.

Figure 7. Participants appreciating the little things

Thereafter, the retreat master called for a snack break as the talk
will continue up to the very end of the topic.
Talk 3: True Love Waits
This last talk is deep and strikes through our hearts, different kinds
of relationship that is existing in our generation was discussed one by one
and little by little, the good and the bad ones. He made the boys and girls
of the participants separate sides.
In this generation, the topic about love is being broadly integrated
into the culture. Younger and younger teens are having relationships as
the center of their lives. It is becoming more and more of a priority and it
is not rare anymore for people even as young as elementary and high
school students. He stressed that even if you already have a special
someone, it is not certain as to until when will your story lasts. He pointed
out that studies should be a students top priority and that there is an
appointed time for everything, this is still not the time to waste your time
for a romantic love and you will not need to rush. God will make the way
for two people to meet and then finally you will know that true love really
waits.

The participants received a lot of education from this talk as he

even went to the sensitive part of the topic, the premarital sex. He
discussed the difference between the holy and the evil of the discussion.
He emphasized the importance of marriage. After having that delicate
topic, he proceeded to discussing the important thing women often forget,
the importance of self value. He narrated that God created women with so
much hardship and complexity. He ended the talk with advices for the
young generation as to how to strengthen a relationship and what degree
of seriousness should be invested for different levels of love. The activity
ended with a song of praise and an ending prayer.
Brother Mark was awarded at the end of the activity for his
inspirational talks. The organization gave him recognition and small prizes
for attending AUECESS religious activity.
From this point on, it can be safely said that the event was indeed a
success. The event had more participants than what it had anticipated.
Through this recollection, students were able to know themselves more
and they were able to reminisce and realize their past mistakes. The
participants were able to appreciate the value of themselves, their
parents, goals, friends, futures and their relationships with God. We may
not able to control where to start and it is up to us to take the challenge
or leave it but the heavens will find a way to guide and set us to the right
path.

III. CONCLUSIONS:

A. How did STARTING OVER AGAIN relate to our organizations

mission and vision?
As student leaders of Adamson University Electronics Engineering
Students Society (AUECESS) we are expected to inspire others in practicing
the Vincentian values, by serving as role models for them and to establish an
organization that shall promote and foster harmonious relationship among
ECE students. A way to fulfill our mission is through the conduction of
starting over again. Starting over again solely focused on how to be
spiritually mature in terms of our relationship with our family, friends, special
ones, self and with God. Some of the Vincentian social values were actually
shared, experienced and learned in this activity, these are the principle of
the dignity of the human person, the principle of respect for human life which
reminded us that every human being is created in the image of God and that
every person is unique in his/ her own way, and the best way to give respect
is to have respect for oneself first. Another is the principle of stewardship
which tells us that we are the manager of Gods wonderful creation and for
us to be entrusted with His wonderful blessings, we must be entrusted with
nothing at all. And of course, the principle of human equality and the
principle of the common good.
We might not know, how the activity affected our community spiritually
but we can say that the Holy Spirit really moved the students hearts.
Because we can say that the activity was able to mend relationships, was
able to teach forgiveness, love and understanding, was able to inspire in
terms of goal achievement, was able to boost self-confidence and esteem
and most importantly, was able to convey how God loved them so much and
how interested He is in their lives, wherein these things can actually be the
greatest step to have a harmonious relationship with one another and not
just among the ECE students.
