Lighting technology

Lighting solution
Art and economic efficiency no contradiction.

In the sphere of art, there is one absolute requirement:

any damage to the works of art in the collections must be avoided.
Garry Thomson / The Museum Environment, 1978

And there is another requirement:

to make art accessible to the viewer

This implies the use of:

luminaires systems with highly effective electronic and
optical systems, to be used with modern light sources (Ra >90)

Technical lighting features experiencing art

Light for pictures

The definition of light is as much a

technical as it is a conceptual
decision.
Through light, panels can be given
a mystical character or be
illuminated as pure objects.

67

Technical lighting features experiencing art

Light for pictures - spotlight with oval outline lens and barn doors

What is decisive is the intention of

the artist or of the curator, but also
conservational considerations and
the choice of the correct angle of
illumination are of importance.

68

Light for pictures - OT-DE wallwasher with asymmetrical light

Moreover, conservational aspects

and the choice of the right angle of
illumination are of importance.

Light for objects

As a rule, art objects are

illuminated by several luminaires
from several directions, in order
not to reduce three-dimensional
plasticity to two dimensions in the
beholder's eye.
In the process, the special
challenge is to attractively set the
stage for the art objects concerned
without, however, dazzling the
viewer from any position.

Daylight - 1A

The continuous spectrum of

natural daylight is the measure of
all things. The human eye is
conditioned to seeing and
recognizing things in daylight
settings. Accordingly, artificial light
sources are modeled on daylight.

ARCOS spotlight system (Design: David Chipperfield)

The new ARCOS luminaires range

once again underscores
Zumtobels lighting technology
expertise in the area of functional
lighting for museums and art
galleries.
The spotlight is available in four
different sizes, including a wall
washer version. Separation of the
light source, reflector and
accessory holder makes re lamping
and replacing reflectors or
accessories easier, for which
usually no tools are required.

ARCOS TUNABLE WHITE: a revolution in lighting

LED luminaire with constant

luminous flux, with colour
temperatures to be chosen
between 2500 K and 6500 K, as
required. Can be adjusted via BUS
signal or manually, directly on the
spotlight head.
Maintenance-free thanks to service
life of 50,000 hours.

ARCADE wallwasher - flexible utilization

Spotlight, wallwasher and uplight all in one!

Depending on the position of the
luminaire housing, which tilts
through 2 x 90, the light emanating
from the parabolic specular
reflector will produce for different
effects.
Aligned in a horizontal position, the
light is projected uniformly onto a
vertical surface.
The rather more vertical spotlight
position, on the other hand, results
in a stronger focus of light on the
vertical surface.

STARFLEX fibre optic system

With its convenient modular design, the

Starflex fibre optic system offers a wide
range of creative lighting applications.
A diffuse lighting atmosphere can be
created just as well as dramatic accent
lighting - even in the case of art objects
that are highly sensitive to light and
heat.
Depending on requirements, the
number, length and diameter of the
optical strings can be chosen freely and
combined with a light outlet that
corresponds to the desired beam
pattern.

8

Applications
Specially designed facades

Illuminating and mediatising

While up until the recent past,
facades were often used as
approved advertising media or to
announce events, they are
increasingly being designed as
luminous objects lately.
Artistic signals are being provided
even on the outside of art and
cultural buildings.
Dynamically changing lighting
installations turn into ambassadors
of art which are visible from afar.

18

Applications museums and art houses

Entrance areas and foyers

Impressive overture:
The historic entrance hall of
the Statens Museum for Kunst,
Copenhagen, has been gently
illuminated by diffuse light.

19

Applications museums and art houses

Entrance areas and foyers

Reception, guidance and

orientation
Just like an overture, entrance
areas and foyers put visitors in the
mood for the enjoyment of art and
culture.
Accordingly, the importance of
architecture and light is particularly
high.
The aim is to combine welcoming
spaciousness with operational
necessities.

20

Applications museums and art houses

Exhibition areas

Recognising and experiencing

While so far, wall washers and
accent spots have dominated the
lighting concepts in exhibitions
areas, today there is a clear trend
towards integrated lighting
solutions with light sources hidden
in the architecture.
Ever more frequently, luminous
ceilings oriented towards daylight
with electronic controls are being
used.

21

Applications museums and art houses

Display presentation

Displaying and preserving

In display lighting, it is the widearea character of the luminous
ceiling in combination with
spotlights and floods which shows
off the work of art to optimum
effect.
Where objects are positioned along
the wall, the solution will be
uniform or partial wall illumination
using wall washers, as well as the
exact outlines provided by framing
spotlights.

22

Applications museums and art houses

Congress and conference areas

Communicating and giving lectures

One of the main topics in
communication areas is flexibility.
Audiovisual media, such as screen
presentations or video projections,
are used in this area of application
and on the spur of the moment.
Accordingly, it must be possible to
quickly and easily adapt the
lighting situation.

23

Applications museums and art houses

Restaurant and catering facilities

In their architecture, catering and

shopping areas in museums need
to match the overall architectural
design.
Today, there is a preference for
minimalistic interior designs with
correspondingly modern lighting
solutions. Apart from neutral
general lighting, up lights and
down lights as well as wallmounted luminaires are in line with
contemporary tastes.
Decorative lighting solutions are
rather avoided.

25

Applications museums and art houses

Access areas

Guiding visitors
While in exhibition areas the
architecture will usually submit to
art, many access areas clearly
express the architect's design
concept.
Stairways and corridors often show
the architect's very own style, thus
creating quite a special experience
of space.

26

Applications museums and art houses

Administration and service

Conceiving and organising

It is not so much screen-based
work but rather communication
with artists and exhibition
managers, as well as the
development of new concepts that
determines the lighting in the
administrative and service areas of
any art or cultural institution.
Apart from meeting general
ergonomic requirements regarding
workstations, the aesthetic concept
is being implemented in these
areas, too.

27

Applications museums and art houses

Car parks and rooms for service and technical equipment

Parking and working

Transport-related infrastructures
are an absolute must for arts and
cultural institutions addressing a
wider public.
(Underground) car parks are the
first direct point of contact between
the building and the motorized
visitor.
Apart from a high level of safety,
security and easy orientation,
therefore, a welcoming first
impression should be achieved.

28

Applications museums and art houses

Car parks and rooms for service and technical equipment

In addition to horizontal
illuminance on all roadways and
parking areas (recommended by
experts), it is above all the
uniformity of lighting that makes
any car park building safe and
attractive.
In combination with large vertical
lighting components, proper
general lighting provides
protection against car burglary and
car theft.

Vienna Museum Quarter architect's statement

"It's always the same procedures

that are being invented anew every
time. Basically it is all about how to
achieve an objectifying type of
lighting."

Museums are no sterile zones.
In the Leopold Museum, carefully
integrated daylight establishes a link
between the world of art and the world
"outside".
Through large panoramic windows,
the outside world becomes part of the
exhibition.
On the lower levels of the Leopold
Museum, extensively backlit luminous
ceilings provide a substitute for
daylight.

12

Project art and art houses

"The decisive aspect in prestigious

interiors is the immanent
atmosphere, the emotional grasp of
the room; earlier master-builders
tried to achieve this through their
impressive art of directing
daylight."

Kress & Adams Atelier fr Tages- und Kunstlichtplanung, Cologne

"The collection of the WallraffRichartz Museum comprises three

main topics, each of which has
been assigned one exhibition level:
The Middle Ages on the first level,
baroque painting on the second,
and finally, on the top level,
impressionism."
