A bit about me
Before I show you other peoples faces I thought I would show you mine and tell you a little bit
about myself and the reason why I love hair and makeup.
It is because of the endless opportunities hair and makeup can provide is why I adore it so
much. Ever since I was a little girl I was obsessed with Barbie's and their perfect skin, hair,
bodies, and makeup. In reality, no one is perfect, and even if we look at someone else and
think they are perfect, the chances are that person doesnt agree. Everyone has things they
wish to change about themselves and for me, makeup allows me to become a little bit closer
to that Barbie or perfection I always wanted. Following that I think it is amazing how
confident make up can make someone feel.
I also believe it is important to feel confident in your own skin with or without your hair or
make up done, this is an area I myself struggle with but continue to develop on. Makeup and
hair allow a person to express themselves in the same way as fashion, music, poems and any
other expressive device do, and it is for this reason it is so popular world wide.
It is fascinating that 5000 years ago make up and hair was as big as it is today with the ancient
Egyptians, in the essay I have written I explore how makeup has changed from 1950 to today. I
learnt a lot whilst writing the essay and hope you enjoy reading it.

Makeup Tests

This look was inspired by Indian wedding makeup. I love the colours that are used in the Indian culture on women and wanted to try
it myself. For this look I did a bold eyeliner, with a gold shimmery lid going into a brown crease with black outer corners. With this I
used a bright red lip, I think this was a nice contrast in colours. For the hair I used a hair necklace and straightened the hair for a sleek
finish. This is the same girl as on the left before she had her makeup done. Before I did her makeup I shaped and filled in her brows
for her. Before her brows were sparse and the hair was different lengths from where she had shaved them or tried to shape them
herself. I was pleased with the result as was she. I used the Sleek eyebrow kit in the colour brown with a light brown eye shadow over
the top.

I also have a page on the social media site called Instagram. This page is dedicated to makeup and hair and I use it as a platform to
post photos of my looks but also as an opportunity to grow as an artist. It is a great place to look at other peoples work and gain
inspiration. I am very pleased with the account so far as I have only recently created it and within a week had over 100 followers
and am now approaching 150.

How makeup and hair has changed and iconic beauty looks through the 1950s to the 21st century.
Makeup has always been a prominent feature within the media, and is a staple within many womens beauty regimes. From Audrey Hepburn
and Marilyn Monroe to Grace Kelly and Twiggy to Angelina Jolie and Kim Kardashian. For decades women have been taking their makeup tips
from beauty figures and their iconic looks. It is the same with women today as it was with the Ancient Egyptians, women are constantly
experimenting and changing the way they look through the power of hair and makeup. Through the 21st century many women have strived to
change the way makeup is seen and used, whilst also keeping the important hallmarks of different eras alive in beauty today.
Women like Audrey Hepburn, and Marilyn Monroe were idolised by many for their revolutionary red lips, defined eyebrows and short curls. Red
lips seemed to define makeup within the 1950s and have continued to be used ever since and are used consistently today. The 1950s allowed
women to feel sexy as they hadnt before and is often remembered today through women such as Marilyn Monroe. Women today often seen
supporting the red lip include people such as Gwen Stefani and Christina Aguilera, but for many people such as Dita Von Teese their whole image
is centred around the iconic 1950s classic look. It has proved the popularity of the image as she is widely seen as a sex symbol having modelled
for famous fashion designers such as Moschino, Jean Paul Gaultier and Vivienne Westwood, and even has her own lipstick with MAC Cosmetics.
Beauty in the 1960s changed to voluminous blow-dried hair and bold striking eyes. When saying 1960s many peoples attention will be drawn
automatically to Twiggy. Appearing on the covers of magazines such as Vogue and The Tatler, Twiggys memorable makeup look was
recognized worldwide. Similarly to Dita Von Teese the look is still used today. Worldwide sensation Adele is often seen wearing a look inspired by
Twiggy through big eyes, long lashes and cut crease eye shadow. Hair in the 1960s was all about volume, women wanted bigger hair in order to
make themselves look slimmer. This is when a well known method called back combing became prominent. In order to achieve the height they
so desired many women and hairstylists would back-comb the hair until it resembled a birds nest on top of their head and then smooth hair over
the top. The beehive was also a popular extravagant hair style and a volumized bob with curled ends. Perhaps the most well known modern
interpretation of the beehive could be seen on Amy Winehouse or Lana Del Rey.
The 1970s was a decade of great political, economic, social and technological change worldwide especially for women. The changed for women
included being able to vote, being able to study at university, domestic violence was acknowledged, have equal pay as men and Margaret
Thatcher was the first women to be British Prime Minister. Women's liberation and feminism had an impact on the cosmetics industry as women
no longer wanted to be seen as sex symbols. This meant women wanted to take a more natural approach. Cosmetics companies branded their

products as barely there natural so women continued to buy cosmetics whilst using their new found freedom. The 70s also introduced styles
such as hippie and disco, women and men had either very flicked out hair or straight hair held down with a headband, music films and celebrities
influences the hair and makeup of the 70s such as Charlies Angels, Greese, and actresses such as Joanna Lumley, all had a massive influences on
the hair of women in the 70s. Music such as punk and new wave influenced cosmetic industries as punks wore heavy colourful makeup, spiked
hair, shaved hair and Mohicans.
Nothing says the 80s like Madonna. Madonna reinvented big natural brows, big bold eyeliner and dark eye shadow along with crazy hair, she was
edgy and successful and men found her attractive so many women followed suit. The 80s was all about all things neon and colour, the makeup was
no different, coloured makeup was used like never before and cosmetic companies boomed. The 80s are still a big influence today, whereas in the
noughties eyebrows became thinner, now in 2015/16, eyebrows are the centre of attention again. Cyndi Lauper was also a big hair and makeup
influence in the 80s and was similar to Madonna, except she had a more wild style. She had crazy multi coloured hair, piercings and edgy fashion,.
In the 90s makeup swayed back to a more natural approach but kept the lip liner . With influences from people such as Kate Moss, Alicia
Silverstone Mariah Carey, and Julia Roberts. Similar to the 70s women were appreciating natural beauty, whilst having said that, flawless skin was
seen as a must have. On the opposite end of the scale there were people such as Geri Halliwell and Emma Bunton from the Spice Girls, Nicole and
Natalie Appleton from All Saints who explored highlights, straight hair, and dark lip liner. Makeup was growing more and more about
complementing the face rather than wearing makeup just for colour. The makeup and hair in the 90s provides a stable ground for make up and
hair today as makeup looks are based around the 90s, most teenage girls will go through the straightening their hair and getting highlights stage
and natural beauty is a massive industry today.
Music was massive in the 00s and hair and makeup in the noughties was impacted massively by singers such as Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne and
Christina Aguilera. Avril Lavigne was the epitome of grunge-chic with her long hair with different colours and heavy eyeliner and every teenage girl
wanted to be her. On the other hand, women seemed bored of the oh so natural approach and with teenage pop stars booming like never before a
lot of cosmetics companies customers were made up of teenage girls. Glitter and all things girly seemed to be a big thing in the 00's influenced by
stars such as Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. In terms of hair, people like Christina Aguilera and Shakira made braids and bandanas a popular hair
style among many women, and Shakira introduced the sexiness of olive skin tones.

Now, in the 21st century hair and makeup is as prominent as ever and forms an essential part of many women's every day lives inluding
mine! Now in 2016, major hair and makeup influences include the Kardashians, Cara Delevigne, and the Victoria Secret models. More then
ever women are trying to keep up to date with the latest beauty trends and tricks, with the developing internet capabilities there are easier
much more opportunities for women to learn how to do makeup such as online tutorials. It has become increasingly easy for women to
change their appearance not only with makeup but with surgery making normal women want to look like their celebrity idols even more
which enables cosmetics companies to take advantage of this even more and promise their products will achieve the results they want. The
most famous female in relation to hair and makeup at the moment has got to be the Kardashian/Jenner family. In the earlier 21st century it
used to be Kim that was the centre of attention but now Kylie has taken over. Kylie often experiments with different coloured hair and wigs,
the same with makeup and she is often seen in the media. Recently she has brought out her own 'lip kit' as her lips are one asset she is well
known for. Eyebrows are also a massive trend right now the same as contouring, which was made famous by Kim Kardashian and her makeup
artist Mario Dedivanovic.
