CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

INTRODUCTION
Rationale of the Study
Gadgets are invented at a very fast pace while some important
basic ones are usually ignored. Obsolescence and impracticality of
existing products used in the community are mostly found in the
households because people are more focused on high-tech appliances
in their homes.
One of the common dilemmas in using soap is its tendency to
melt quickly which shortens its useful life. It is costly for the users
since they have to replacing their soaps more often. It is due to these
reasons that the importance of properly storing soaps was given focus
in this study. There are various kinds of soap holders being traded in
the market which are intended to prevent the soap from soaking.
However, many of these products still fail to drain the water which
would keep the soap wet, untidy and be prone to bacterial
contamination.
The researchers have come up with this study to determine the
viability of the product which is a soap holder that would allow the

Problem and Its Scope | 2

soap to last longer and does not become a sloppy mess. (Gasborro,
1990) Moreover, the project if implemented incorporates the issue
regarding waste management particularly on recycling and innovation
into one product, as well as, promotes environmental protection.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The study was formulated in order to determine the viability and
feasibility of the proposed project entitled A Proposed Production of
Magnetic Soap Holder Made from High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
and Its Distribution to Home Depots in Cebu City. Specifically, the
following queries were answered:
1. Is the proposed project viable and feasible in the aspects of:
1.1Technical;
1.2Marketing;
1.3Management;
1.4Financing;
1.5Legal and Taxation;
1.6Financial;
1.7Socio-Economic Desirability and
1.8Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats
2. Based on the findings, what recommendations would be provided
regarding the business proposal?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Problem and Its Scope | 3

The valuable information gathered from this study stretches out

to and involves various areas and personalities bringing them essential
information beneficial to their unique needs.
Prospective Investors
Prospective investors are essential to every business endeavor.
They greatly influence the financial aspect of the business. Every
investment that they venture is expected to produce a corresponding
return. They can use the idea of recycling as a new business venture to
enter into.
Government
This study can help the government formulate projects directed
to the public especially households. The data gathered will serve as a
basis for public officials to encourage the community to participate in
recycling plastics because of the benefits discovered in the study. Due
to the nature of the study, the government can also extend to the
communities the idea of creating recycled products.
Junk Shops
This study provides information to the junk shops regarding the
segregation of plastics according to its different uses. Since the study

Problem and Its Scope | 4

focuses on an alternative use of plastics, they can have an idea on

other possible customers.
Households
The study gives the household information as to the importance
of segregating and recycling plastic waste. The study can give them
ideas on what kind of endeavors they will pursue using the data
presented in the book.
Researchers
This study greatly enhanced the intellectual prowess of the
researchers. It has developed their communication and negotiation
skills thereby improving their ability of social interaction within the
group. Furthermore, it has boosted their confidence and competence in
dealing

with

various

organizations.

The

study

heightened

the

researchers sense of time thereby strengthening their discipline in

time management. As a result, this has increased their overall
efficiency and effectiveness.
Research Adviser
The study further introduced innovative ideas and discoveries.
The diversity of information imposes a challenge that defines their
ability to guide the researchers towards the development of their study
and their personal growth.

Problem and Its Scope | 5

Future Researchers
Since change is inevitable, this study serves as a starting ground
for future researches to utilize some data from the book to enrich their
own studies or to validate or negate the findings of their work.
RESEARCH DESIGN
The research design refers to the systematic plan used to
integrate the different components of the study. A good research
design ensures that the necessary data are collected effectively and
efficiently in order to generate reliable and trustworthy information.
This will facilitate the smooth flow of research activities to minimize
misstatements of information.
Research Environment
The research was conducted through a survey addressed to
home depots in Cebu City. They will serve as the target market since
they sell household supplies which include soap holders. There are 34
identified home depots in Cebu City, from small to big establishments.
From the South, home depots are identified from Mambaling to
Bulacao; from the North, there are home depots from M.J. Cuenco to
Talamban; and from Downtown, home depots from Colon Area.
Research Methodology and Instruments

Problem and Its Scope | 6

The study used descriptive research by identifying the population

according to the characteristics of the target market chosen by the
researchers. The study to be used is the descriptive survey method
whereby respondents would answer questions through interviews and
questionnaires. The researchers conducted a survey through group
made questionnaires in order to gather pertinent information. Since
the total population is small, the entire population was surveyed. The
data gathered were classified, tabulated, analyzed, and interpreted to
determine the viability of the proposed product in the market. The
researchers also referred to other sources of data such as the articles
from the internet, reference materials from the library and inquiries
from experts.
Population and Respondent
In the registration of business establishments in DTI and SEC, it
cannot be clearly determined what kind of products the establishments
are selling. Some hardware stores are selling household supplies while
others do not. Likewise, general merchandisers who are not truly
considered as home depots are selling household supplies. However,
for the purpose of this study, general merchandisers and only the
hardware stores selling housing supplies were considered part of the
home depot population.

Research Procedures
The group made questionnaire was presented to the person
knowledgeable of the products of the company as well as in the selling
of these products. In the conduct of this research, it was presented
mostly to the purchasing personnel of the company and some to the
authorized personnel or representative of the business due to the
absence of the purchasing personnel. The whole population was
considered by the proponents since they are few and accessible.
Other than the information gathered from the home depots, this
feasibility has been organized through the utilization of information
from government agencies, namely: Department of Science and
Technology (DOST), Department of Environment and Natural Resources
(DENR), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Securities and
Exchange Commissions (SEC). Additional information was also being

Problem and Its Scope | 8

inputted by the Technical Education, Skills and Development Authority

(TESDA) as well as previous feasibility studies and online references.
The gathered information was then analyzed according to their
use and classified according to the aspects of the study. This
information was used to forecast the profitability of the business as
well as in creating estimates for the business operation.
Limitations of the Study
In the course of conducting the feasibility study, obtaining
precise, error-free information from the entire population cannot be
easily achieved. Time constraints, the lack of sufficient monetary
resources, the limited area, and the use of estimates are just some of
the factors that hindered the researchers in conducting the study. The
following are some of the instances that the researchers considered to
be limitations of the study.

Some of the respondents did not answer the questionnaires

because it will take up the companys business time or they are

too busy to entertain.

Some internal information that was asked to the respondents
was not supplied due to confidentiality matters that the

management is not willing to disclose.

Other needed information can only be obtained from places
outside of Cebu like Manila, Davao, and other parts of the
Philippines which would entail huge amounts of costs to get.

Problem and Its Scope | 9

Since some data cannot be obtained, estimates based on

conservatism were used.
