Enhancement of Electrical Power Quality Using UPQC

For Grid Connected Wind Energy System

Abstract:
It has always been a challenge to maintain the quality of electric power
within acceptable limits. Integration of wind power with the electrical grid
affects the power quality by generating harmonics in voltages and currents
along with increased reactive current. The proposed scheme focuses on
diminishing these power quality issues using Unified Power Quality
Compensator (UPQC), an active power filter device. A Battery Energy Storage
System (BESS) is connected to the UPQC at the point of common coupling
(PCC) to increase the effectiveness of power quality improvement. The
harmonic parts of load current are reduced by developing and simulating
the control scheme for the UPQC in MATLAB\SIMULINK.
The enhancement of power quality of a grid connected wind energy system is
achieved mostly by employing any one of the FACTS devices of shunt or
series compensation. Shunt compensating devices such as Static VAR
Compensator (SVC) and Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM)
improve the power factor and reduce the Ferranti effect. Series
compensating devices such as Static Synchronous Series Compensator
(SSSC) reduce large voltage drops at the load end. Employing UPQC where
both shunt and series active power filter functionalities are integrated
together to achieve superior control over power quality problems is a wiser
option for improving the power quality of the grid.
In steady-state condition, grid connected wind farms must provide
oscillatory services like the conventional power plants, e .g reactive power
compensation, voltage and frequency regulation etc. In transient conditions
wind farm must withstand harmonic distortions, voltage sags and swells.
The voltage variation, flicker and harmonics cause malfunction of grid
equipments and reduce the power quality and power reliability at the
consumer end. To mitigate these power quality issues, UPQC, which is a

combination of shunt and series compensation devices is employed with the

integration of BESS at the point of common coupling.
UPQC , the hybrid active power filter device, consists of two three phase
inverters- inverter 1 and inverter 2 cascaded in series with the supply
voltage and parallel with the load respectively. The series compensator
(inverter 1) operated in PWM voltage controlled mode injects the voltage in
quadrature advance to the supply voltage sustaining the load end voltage at
desired value. The shunt compensator (inverter 2) , a STATCOM based
current controlled inverter injects the current in to the grid cancelling the
harmonic part of load and induction generator current. The Battery Energy
Storage System (BESS) connected at the point of common coupling regulates
the supply voltage by maintaining constant DC capacitor voltage. In this
scheme induction generator is used as the generating machine and the wind
generation is based on constant speed topology with pitch control turbine for
simplicity.
The Unified Power Quality Compensator (UPQC) based control scheme for
power quality improvement of grid connected wind energy system is
developed in MATLAB/SIMULINK. The integration of UPQC with Battery
Energy Storage System (BESS) at the point of common coupling facilitates
maintaining the smooth voltage profile and reduction in harmonic
distortions in the load current. UPQC, having versatile ability of shunt and
series compensation, is utilized to enhance the power quality of the grid
effectively.
