Use of social media in the Department of Immigra5on and Ci5zenship
Purpose
The purpose of this sec.on is to provide guidance for all Department of Immigra.on and Ci.zenship
employees and contractors on the use of social media tools.
What are social media tools for online communica5on?
Social media include a range of new tools and technologies. The following list is not exhaus.ve nor does it
cover all pla?orms:
Blogs—an online journal of opinions, brief paragraphs and informa.on that can be updated regularly.
Wikis—web‐based systems for genera.ng web pages, allowing users to collaborate by adding, removing
and edi.ng content collec.vely.

subscrip.on.
RSS (Really Simple Syndica.on [RSS]—allows users to receive updated informa.on from websites, blogs
or podcasts without having to visit a website repeatedly. RSS provides open and .mely communica.on

Social bookmarking—refers to group‐based collec.ons of links to ar.cles and media. Users bookmark

Social networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, My Space and Flickr—provide users with
infrastructure and resources to connect and communicate with each other and share and exchange

Virtual worlds (such as Second Life)—allow users to create a physical online iden.ty and socialise with
each other, create objects and buildings and conduct sales.
Official use of online communica5on tools
All online communica.on on behalf of the department must be authorised. The process for doing this will
depend on the nature and purpose of the communica.on.
Working with online media in an official capacity is subject to the same standards required by the Public

These include:

official purposes in connec.on with APS employment
dealing appropriately with informa.on, recognising that some informa.on needs to remain confiden.al
being apoli.cal, impar.al and professional
delivering services fairly, effec.vely, impar.ally and courteously to the Australian public
behaving with respect and courtesy, and without harassment
being sensi.ve to the diversity of the Australian public
taking reasonable steps to avoid conflicts of interest
making proper use of Commonwealth resources
upholding the APS Values and the integrity and good reputa.on of the APS.
