ZIKA VIRUS

Tel: (718) 285 7801

FACTS ABOUT ZIKA

22 countries and territories in the Americas are

aected.
Parts of US are home to Aedes mosquitos, which
spread the virus.
Zika spreads through mosquito bites. A normal
mosquito can become a carrier if it bites a zika infected
person.
Illness is usually mild, & symptoms resolve after 2 to 7
days.

PREGNANT WOMEN

Zika is linked to a terrible birth defect called

microcephaly, which is characterized by a shrunken
head and incomplete brain development.
Pregnant women are most at risk during their first
trimester, but there is evidence the risk continues
into the second trimester as well.
The virus can be transmitted during labor, sexual
contact, blood transfusion or lab exposure, but we
don't yet know if Zika can be passed on through nursing.
Zika virus does not seem to pose a risk of birth defects
for future pregnancies.
CDC has advised pregnant women to stay out of
countries where the Zika virus is circulating.

Sexual partners can protect themselves by using

condoms to prevent spreading sexually transmitted
infections. People who have Zika virus infection can
protect others by preventing additional mosquito
bites.
