Blessings to each of you as we step into the month of February with all its activities. We begin
lent Wednesday, February 10th. We have our youth sponsored Sweetheart Breakfast February
14th and our First Communion classes.
Our Lenten theme this year is: The Many Wonders of Heaven Are Ours Through the
Payment of Jesus Christ. We can live our lives in more victory, joy and peace when we can live
lifes journey each day with the end in mind. Every human being at some point on lifes
journey has an appointment with death. There is no getting out of it. But for the believer who
is saved from the destructive powers of sin, death and hell by faith in Jesus Christ, physical
death becomes a doorway into our wonderful forever home in heaven. We will explore some of
these wonders this Lenten journey of 2016. Jesus said in Luke 10:19-21:
Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents
and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy,
and nothing shall hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice
in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice
that your names are written in heaven.
Enjoy the journey of life in Gods forever family through Jesus Christ, but do it with one eye on
our wonderful home awaiting us in Heaven.
As we prepare for changes at Shepherd of the Pines this year, let us remember that our Lord
Jesus Christ is with us always. He is here to guide and help us. I will be retiring from Pastoral
Ministry and as Pastor here at Shepherd of the Pines Lutheran Church June 30 th of this year. It
has been a wonderful journey with you all. I have experienced Gods presence with us over the
years, guiding and providing for us. His presence has been upon this church from its
beginning and will continue to be upon this church through the changes and into the future.
As you leave the church through the front doors, look up at the picture of Jesus with His
hands upon the church building, and let it remind you to pray for this church, for the call
committee, and that the Lord will guide you to the right Pastor who will lead you into the next
phase of Gods plan for you. Between now and June 30 th lets enjoy the journey together as
we follow our Lords leading. Blessings and Love,

like the world. Often, they are new to the faith or simply have not allowed the Holy Spirit free access to every
area of their souls. They are trying to live the Christian life in their own strength, while still being heavily
influenced by the worlds way of thinking.
The carnal mind has not been fully renewed by the Word of God and still seeks compromise with the world
(James 4:4). Carnal Christians allow the persuasive viewpoints of the ungodly to sway their opinions on
many things, including abortion. Spiritual growth requires us to shed our old ways of thinking as we become
more like Christ. We begin to see things the way God does, and the closer to Him we become, the less we
agree with the worlds system (Psalm 1:1-2).
Pro-choice advocates state that the Bible does not address abortion, so the decision should be the
individuals. While it is true that the term abortion does not appear in the Bible, the principles about the
value of life are there. In Exodus 21:22-23, God wrote into His Law protection for the unborn. If a pregnant
woman was injured, causing her to lose her child, then the one who caused the injury was to be executed:
a life for a life. The phrase life for a life says a lot. God considers the life of the unborn just as valuable
as that of a grown man.
God said to Jeremiah, Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I
consecrated you (Jeremiah 1:5). It was God who created him for a specific purpose. Psalm 139:13-16 gives
us the clearest picture of Gods viewpoint on the unborn. David writes,
For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mothers womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am
fearfully and wonderfully madeMy frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secretYour eyes
have seen my unformed substance; and in Your book were all written the days that were ordained for me,
when as yet there was not one of them.
The Bible is clear that all human life is created by God for His purpose and His pleasure (Colossians
1:16), and a Christian who truly wants to know the heart of God must align his or her viewpoint with Gods.
When we start justifying evil according to our understanding, we dilute the truth of Gods Word. When we
rename adultery an affair, homosexuality an alternative lifestyle, and murder of the unborn a choice, we
are headed for serious trouble. We cannot redefine what it means to follow Christ. Jesus said we must first
deny ourselves (Matthew 16:24; Luke 9:23). Part of denying ourselves is letting go of comfortable lies the
world has fed us. We have to let go of our own understanding and allow God to change us (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Some pro-choice advocates argue that they are not pro-abortion. They say they hate abortion, but
support a womans right to choose. This makes as much sense as saying that you personally hate rape, but
support a mans right to commit it. The rhetoric sounds nicethe mention of choice makes it more
appealingbut underneath is a direct conflict with Gods viewpoint in Scripture.
The Bible is clear: since God is the Creator of human life, only He can determine who lives or dies.
And every person who claims the name of Christ has the obligation to make certain his or her views line up
with Gods Word. Is it possible for a born-again Christian to be pro-choice? Yes. Is it likely that such a
person will remain pro-choice? Not if her or she is allowing Gods Word to transform and renew his or her
mind. (Romans 12:2).
Blessings on the Journey,

Shepherd of the Pines Mission Statement: Connecting People to GodTo Othersand To Service
The purpose of this congregation is mandated for us by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, as found in the words of the Great
Commission (Matthew 28), namely first of all to Go. To leave our walls of refuge, going into all the world, comprising of our families
and neighbors. We plan to achieve our purpose by identifying persons with whom we are particularly well-equipped to serve and reach
with the challenge of becoming Disciples of Christ.
Second, to Make Disciples or in the words of St Paul, To equip the saints (Ephesians 4:12). This is to be understood as helping
people to live the Christian life here on earth. Preparing and encouraging young and old alike to find and to use their God given gifts
and abilities for the extension of His Kingdom, and to grow in fervent love for God and for others.
Thirdly, to Baptize as commanded by Jesus Himself. As God reaches down to mankind with His means of grace, He would have us
baptize His people, bringing them into His family and Kingdom, granting to them life, forgiveness of sins, and eternal salvation.
And lastly, to continue steadfast in His Word, Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. A continued
zeal for the study of His Word, the Bible, is necessary for the growth of any Christian congregation. Thus, the Word of God will be
taught and studied in full measure and His Word shall be the rule and norm of this congregations faith and life.
To that end, our every effort and energy will be used in motivating, training, and putting to use our time, and talents and treasures
to Make Disciples.
