Life Post Coal: The Transition of Senftenberg

from an Economy of Extraction to a
Landscape of Leisure
Professor: Eve Blau
Reconceptualizing the Urban: Berlin as Laboratory
Fall 2015
Senftenberg is just one town involved in a larger regional
effort to transition the Lusatian economy from one of
lignite mining to a lake region for respite and recreation.
This project focused on the period of transition: the
entities and policies that influenced the creation of
Lake Senftenberg, the details of the physical restoration
process, and how the result is informing policy and
planning decisions in the region today. The diagrammatic
timeline highlights the period in which critical events
and policies influenced the transition of Senftenbergs
economy and landscape.
The plan for Lake Senftenberg originated before major
environmental concern for the pollution of lignite mines.
Lusatia is commended for its proactive planning for the
future, assuming a time in which the rest of the mines
would be exhausted. The series of maps to follow will
document the physical transition of the land over the
20th century to today so we can see the drastic changes
in land use as mines are created, closed, and reclaimed.

Softscaping South Bay: Creating a More

Resilient Newmarket
5 Sea Level Rise (c. 2100)

Professor: Dan DOca

Second Semester Urban Planning Core Studio
Spring 2015
This project studies the Newmarket/South Bay area and
how it will be affected by sea level rise. While the site is
not in the flood plain as defined by FEMA, it is vulnerable
to inundation with the 5 sea level rise and even more so
with the 200 year 7.5 sea level rise. The risk of this area
flooding is heightened by the fact that this is an industrial
area and much of the land has been polluted throughout
the years.

7.5 Sea Level Rise (c. 2200)

This area is one of Bostons most viable industrial

districts. However, with the industrial nature comes huge
swathes of impervious pavement. When also considering
surrounding streets and rooftops, practically the entire
site is an impervious surface. This condition will only
exacerbate local flooding issues.
For my intervention, I proposed to majorly increase
the amount of soft surfaces to create a more resilient
industrial district. The goal is to use green infrastructure
to both manage storm-water runoff and filter pollutants
before they enter the bay. Also, to create a safer, healthier,
and more enjoyable environment for the districts
employees. This plan will implement various techniques
such as permeable pavement, bioswales, infiltration
fields, and green roofs. It is critical to do all of this while
maintaining the functionality of a viable industrial and
commercial district.

A lack of social and
physical mobility has
long played a critical
role in destabilizing
the community
around the Pruitt-Igoe
site. The difficulty
of commuting in
and out of North St.
Louis and the sites
disconnection to the
surrounding city is
preventing the areas
development and
reurbanization.
I am proposing to
create an overlap of
multiple transportation
systems and networks
to reconnect the
Pruitt-Igoe site
to the rest of the
neighborhood, the
city, and the entire St.
Louis region.

Zoom on North Jefferson Ave: A Model

for Further Greenway Development

pruitt igoe now

independent
proposal

By allowing the
copious amount
of vacant lots
surrounding the site
to be incorporated
into a new expanded
greenway network,
the corridor will
provide various
programs for the
neighborhood
and allow the land
(often a brownfield)
to remediate and
prepare for possible
future development.

What will a Greenway bring to the community?

gathering information

the neighborhood of
Wellston: a beutiful,

de-urbanization. We

a site and collected
samples of materials

Study Abroad in Florence, Italy: Selected Works

21

study abroad: florence, italy

timeline
Florence was
built as a city of
merchants, so
material production
has always been
integrated into the
urban fabric. This
concept remains in
our perception of the
modern city, in which
products such as
tourism, fashion, and
food are legitimized
by a made in
florence label. In this
timeline I break the
history into chapters
of production and
overlap maps of the
growing city with
artifacts of material
cutlure that are
significant to the
development of
Florence.

22

study abroad: florence, italy

exploring the
streets
In a city such as
Florence, the best
way to understand
the urban design,
history, and culture
of the city is to get
out and walk the
streets. In this project
I studied one of the
most traveled paths
in Florence: from the
Palazzo Vecchio,
over Ponte Vecchio,
and to Palazzo Pitti.
Through perspective
and section drawings,
I observed how the
urban fabric affected
my experience and
how I understood this
well-known area of
the city.
