Pastors Corner- A Note from Pressley

Dear Friends,
So many of the important moments in life occur around a table.
I encourage you to think back on your life, and of the significant
experiences youve had at a table. Perhaps you can remember
being fed by your mother at the table as a toddler. Perhaps you
remember feeding your mother when she was unable to do so for
herself. Maybe it is joyful moments that drift to the surface of
your memory of a table, moments of exciting news shared and
new life plans dreamed up. Maybe its whats on the table that
you remember: pizza Fridays with your family, your
grandmothers biscuits, your mothers spaghetti sauce. And
maybe, you think of a communion table; that place where
familiarity meets a stirring you cant quite explain, in the
sacramental beauty of ritual. That table is the core of our
identity as followers of Jesus Christ.

An Interrupted Table
Luke 7: 36-50

This Lent, I invite you on a journey through tables of the New

Testament. We will experience an orderly table interrupted by a
woman with costly perfume. We will see how those wily
Pharisees tried to trick Jesus at a table, and how he left them all
agape with his own test of faithfulness. We will hear Jesus
ancient, and yet, timely, words about how the kingdom feast God
calls and requires an immediate response. We will experience
the grace and discomfort of that homecoming table the prodigal
was welcomed back to, and we will explore clean and unclean
eating practices with Peter in the early church of Acts. We will
witness the fury of Jesus overturning a table of greed in the
temple, and we will gather Maundy Thursday to remember what
the table of remembrance we come to in the Lords Supper is
really all about. And finally, when our journey is complete, and
we find our stomachs and souls hungry for the bread of heaven,
we will walk alongside those bewildered disciples who recognized
our risen Lord when they gathered at a table and broke bread
together.
Pull up a chair this Lent, friends. There is plenty of room at the
table.
Grace and Peace-

Pressley
We are one family in Christ,
living in community, celebrating our faith,
called, comforted and
challenged by the Word of God,
reaching out to all persons.

Our Vision:
To grow in God, make Christ known and
serve with love.
Our Mission:
Worship GOD, Grow IN FAITH, Go AND SERVE

Get Ready! Registration for summer camp will be
opening up soon. This summer, Pressley will be
serving as Chaplain for the week of July 17-22,
2016. Eastminster children are encouraged to
register for that week. There are several
opportunities that week including Pathfinders (2nd-5th
grade),and Explorers (6th-8th grade). Well swim,
hike, make new friends and explore all that is around
us in the beautiful mountains in Sapphire, NC!! Save
the date, registration will be available in midFebruary!!

ITS TIME TO SIGN UP FOR SPRING SUNDAY SCHOOL ASSISTANTS!!

Thank you to all the wonderful people who volunteered this fall with our
children's Sunday School classes. It's time to sign up for our Spring
semester. Please follow this link to Volunteer Spot to sign up:
http://vols.pt/2Y5wLJ or contact Lynn at: lynn@eastminster.com and she will
add you to the calendar on the Volunteer Spot website. Thank you for
supporting our children's Christian education!

CHILDREN'S SUNDAY SCHOOL IS IN SESSION! Once again, children K-4

through 5th grade will go upstairs for Sunday school class at 10:30 and return to the
service during the singing of the second hymn, which is right after the sermon.
We are using the Whirl Lectionary curriculum again this year, with the children
reading and discussing the same Scripture as their parents will hear in church. Each
child will be given their own bulletin to take home with discussion starters on the
back to share with their parents. We hope that families use these questions to
further faith conversations at home.

Youth Ministry News

YOUTH SUMMER CAMP Think summer camp at Camp Buc is just for kids? Think
again! This summer Camp Buc is offering a unique week designed specifically for Middle
School and Senior Highs. There will be options including a week of mission opportunities
in the mountains of North Carolina. Save the week of June 19 for this amazing
week. Registration will be available soon.
SOUPER BOWL OF CARING COLLECTION:
On Sunday, Feb. 7th, youth will be in the Commons area following worship to collect
donations for the Souper Bowl of Caring. The Souper Bowl of Caring has partnered with
groups across our state to help spread the word that over 800,000 people in South Carolina
live in food insecure households. That means that 1 out of every 5 people in our Palmetto
State don't know where their next meal is coming from. Since its beginning more than 25
years ago, the Souper Bowl of Caring has raised more than $110 million for local charities
across the nation, and $6 million right here in SC. Our donations will be split between
God's Pantry and United Ministries. Be a part of this movement that is changing the
game! Donate generously on Feb. 7th!!

SOUPER BOWL OF CARING COLLECTION:

We need all of our youth out in force next Sunday, Super Bowl Sunday, to take up
the Souper Bowl of Caring collection. We'll have multiple pots/containers with the two
teams' logos for people to put their donations into, but we need youth willing to hold
those containers and take those donations. Meet in the Commons Room during the
singing of the last hymn to get your container for the collection. Go Panthers!

Youth Parents Advisory Board

Recently, a group of youth parents
met and talked over the youth
program and future
opportunities. We decided to go
forward with a service event at
Animal Care Services near
Cherrydale and also explore helping
out members of our own
congregation this spring. Stay tuned
for upcoming dates! If you know
someone in our congregation that
could use a helping hand with
chores around the house, please let
Lynn know:
lynn@eastminster.com Thank you
to all the parents who attended!

BISTRO SERVICE!!
It's time for our annual Bistro fundraising event!
This year, it will be held on Feb. 14th. This is our
biggest youth fundraiser of the year, helping to
pay for our house at Montreat and other youth
events throughout the year, so we need everyone to
pitch in and help to make it a success.
Barry and Amy Campbell and Eileen and Mark
Osteen are in charge once again this year (BIG thank
you to all of them!), and this is what they need
from our youth:
1) Training on the 7th following worship.
2) Set up after service the 14th and back no later
than 4:00 for Bistro.
***Wear black pants/skirt and white or red top
and comfortable shoes.***
It would be wonderful to see all of our youth
involved this year!

The Gospel of John is the most deeply spiritual of the
four gospels. It includes some of the loftiest and most
loved verses in all the Bible: "And the Word became
flesh...," "For God so loved the world...," "You who are
without sin cast the first stone...," "I am the resurrection
and the life...," "I am the way, and the truth, and the
life." The writing is filled with rich images and
profound truths, but John notes that his aim in writing
the gospel is that his readers will not only believe in
Jesus Christ, but that they "may have life in his name."
This Lent, join minister and author Adam Hamilton and
experience a season of spiritual growth and lifechanging renewal while reading the entire Gospel of
John.

EPC Mission and Outreach Update

TO OUR GAIHN VOLUNTEERS
Many thanks to all of you who participated in the

of the network of twenty-four areahosting churches and eighteen

provide three homeless families
safe lodging, nourishing meals, and
hospitality for a week. Through
your generosity, these family
members were able to stay together
as they confronted the daunting
challenges of being homeless and
living in a temporary shelter.
A special thank you to the following
who signed up to help: Heather Taylor, Lynn and Sandy

So the next time
you are at the store, pick up an extra can of pasta
