RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
Masters Thesis in Progress: Sociocultural influences of the doctor-patient relationship on
pain perception
Department of Psychology, University of Miami, Miami, FL
Defense Date: April 2016
Chairperson: Elizabeth R. Losin, Ph.D.
The goal of this study is to examine psychological, sociocultural, biological, and neurological factors
influencing patient pain perception in the doctor-patient relationship. Patient participants and clinician
participants will complete simulated clinical interactions in which the patient will receive heat
stimulations on the forearm using a Medoc Pathway Pain & Sensory Evaluation System. Skin
conductance response (SCR), heart rate (HR), facial expression, and inflammatory cytokine data will
also be taken. Findings may help providers more accurately assess and treat patient pain in clinical
and nonclinical health settings.
