BasicallyaQuadcopterisaQUADROTORhelicopterthatisliftedandpropelledbyfour
rotors.Aquadcopterisaflyingvehiclepossessing4identicalrotors,evenlyspacedaroundthe
centralfuselage(hub).
BrushlessDCmotorsareusedasrotors&theyusesymmetricallypitchedpropellers.
Controlofvehiclemotionisachievedbyalteringthepitchandrotationrateofoneormore
motors,therebychangingitstorqueloadandthrust/liftcharacteristics.Variousmovementsare
possiblebyvaryingthedirectionofrotationofpropellers&byalteringthespeedofthemotors.

ThisisthemostimportantbasicpartofaQuadcopter.Asthenameindicates,thecopterhas4

GenerallyBLDCmotorsarereferredinKVslike,850KV,1100KV,1400KV,1800KV,..
Manypeoplenewtoflightgetconfusedbybrushlesselectricmotorratings,specificallytheKv
ratingthinkingKv=kilovolts(1kV=1000volts).Thisisnotthecaseatall.TheKvratingofa
brushlessmotorreferstohowmanyRPMitturnspervolt.
TheKVratingonaBLDCmotorisequaltoRPMperVOLTappliedtothemotor.SoaBLDC
motorwithaKVratingof1000KVwillspinat1000RPMwhen1voltisapplied,ifyouapply
12voltsthemotorwillspinat12000rpm.

makeitspin.Themotorsrequiresomespecialphasecontrolelectronicsthatiscapableof
generatingthreehighfrequencysignalswithdifferentbutcontrollablephases,buttheelectronics
shouldalsobeabletosourcealotofcurrentasthemotorscanbeverypowerhungry.
ESCsdotheperfectjobofcontrollingBLDCs..TheESCsissimplyabrushlessmotorcontroller
boardwithbatteryinputandathreephaseoutputforthemotors.Forthecontrolitisusuallyjust
asimplePPMsignal(similartoPWM)thatrangesfrom1ms(minspeed=turnoff)to2ms(max
speed)inpulsewidth.
Thefrequencyofthesignalsdoesalsovaryalotfromcontrollertocontroller,butfora
QuadCopteritisrecommendedtogetacontrollerthatsupportsatleast200Hzorevenbetter
300HzPPMsignal,asitshouldbepossibletochangethemotorspeedsveryquicklytoadjustthe
QuadCoptertothestableposition.

Oneachofthebrushlessmotorstherearemountedapropeller.The4propellersareactually
notidentical.Ifyouhavealookatthepictureaboveyouwillnoticethatthefrontandtheback
propellersaretiltedtotheright,whiletheleftandrightpropellersaretiltedtotheleft.
ThisreasonforthisisthatthemotortorqueofandthelawofphysicswillmaketheQuadCopter
spinarounditselfifallthepropellerswererotatingthesameway,withoutanychanceof
stabilizingit.
Bymakingthepropellerpairsspinineachdirection,butalsohavingoppositetilting,allofthem
willprovideliftingthrustwithoutspinninginthesamedirection.Thismakesitpossibleforthe
QuadCoptertostabilizetheyawrotation,whichistherotationarounditself.
Thepropellerscomeindifferentdiametersandpitches(tilting).Youwouldhavetodecidewhich
onetouseaccordingtoyourframesize,andwhenthatdecisionismadeyoushouldchoseyour
motorsaccordingtothat.
