working for a number of well-established manufacturers in the wireless
communication industry.
In 1989, with a wealth of electronic design experience behind it, the
Company progressed into the manufacture & design of safety
equipment.

number of well known lighting manufacturers with its range of
conversion equipment, and distributing its products through a large
number of major and independent electrical wholesalers.

2 Introduction
Design guide
The below information outlines the design requirements of BS5266
Parts 1 and 7 (EN1838). This information is intended to be used for
guidance only as some local authorities may have additional
requirements.
Determine the location of the points of the emphasis as outlined

below:
Research & Design

The Company has an in house laboratory, where all of our products
undergo numerous tests using the latest apparatus to ensure their
safety and compliance to the relevant British standards. Among some
of the appartatus being operated are an environmental oven (endurance
& heat tests) and EMC testing equipment.
PCB Assembly
All electronic circuits are designed and assembled in house using state
of the art automated PCB assembly technology, ensuring efficiency and
reliability.

Ensure that the safety signs & the exist signs throughout the
escape routes are illuminated within two meters and updated to
the latest format as illustrated below.

BS5266 Parts 1 and 7: 1999 states that a minimum of 0.2 lux

lighting level is required any where along the central line of a
clear & unobstructed escape route. Escape routes that may be
obstructed or have possible risks must have a higher
unspecified lighting level.

In areas where a potentially hazardous activity (involving vehicles,

moving machinery, flammable or corrosive liquids) may continue
after the failure of the normal lighting supply, special
consideration is required.
Illuminance should be maintained at a minimum of 10% of the
normal lighting level and 15 lux shall be provided with 0.5
seconds of normal supply failure.

Glossary
Anti-Panic (Open) Area Lighting
Is that part of the emergency lighting which provide illumination to
reduce panic and enable the public to reach an escape route
safely.
Ballast
Is equipment to control the operation of a fluorescent lamp from a
specified low or high voltage AC or DC source (typically between
12 & 240 volts).
Battery
One or more cells providing the power in the event of mains
failure.
Ballast Lumen Factor
Is the ratio of the light output of the lamp when the ballast under
test is operated at its design voltage compared with the light
output of the same lamp operated with the appropriate reference
ballast supplied at its rated voltage and frequency.
Central Battery System
Is a system in which the batteries for a number of luminaries are
housed in one location. Occasionally to supply luminaries to a
complete building or More usually for one lighting sub-circuit.
Combined Luminaire
An Emergency Lighting luminaire containing at least two lamps,
one of which is energised from the normal lighting supply and the
other from an emergency lighting supply. Such a luminaire is
intended to sustain illumination at all material times.
Emergency Exit
An exit which is intended to be used only during an emergency.
Emergency Lighting
Lighting provided for use when the supply to the normal lighting
fails.
Escape Route
A route forming part of the means of escape from any point in a
building to a final exit.
Exit
A way out which is intended to be used at any time whilst the
premises are occupied.
Final Exit
The terminal point of an escape route, beyond which persons are
no loner in danger from fire.
High Risk Task Area Lighting
That part of Emergency Escape lighting provided to ensure the
safety of people involved in a potentially dangerous process or
situation and to enable proper shut down procedures for the
safety of the operator and the other occupants of the premises.
Illuminance
The luminous flux density at a surface, i.e. the luminous flux
incident per unit area. The unit of illuminance is lux.
K Factor
Is the ratio between the light output from the lamp in the worst
condition, (normally at the end of discharge and with any cable
volt drop) and the light output at nominal voltage.
Self-contained

Luminaire
Apparatus which distributes, filters and transforms the light given
by a lamp or lamps and which includes all the items necessary for
fixing and protecting these lamps and for connecting them to the
supply circuit.
Maintained Emergency Lighting
Lighting systems in which all emergency lighting lamps are in
operation at all material times.
Mounting Height
The vertical distance between a luminaire and the working plane.
Non-Maintained Emergency Lighting
A lighting system in which all emergency lighting lamps are in
operation only when supply to the normal lighting fails.

The time, as claimed by the manufacturer, that the rated lumen
output is provided after failure of the normal supply.
Rated Load
Is the maximum load, which may be connected to the emergency
lighting system.
Re-Charge Period
Is the time necessary for batteries to regain sufficient capacity to
achieve their rated.
Room Index
Defines the relationship between the height, length and width of a
room, used for illuminance calculations.
Self-Contained Emergency Luminaire
A luminaire providing maintained or non maintained emergency
lighting in which all the elements, such as the battery, the lamp,
the control unit and the test and the monitoring facilities, where
provided, are contained within the luminaire or adjacent to it (that
is, within 1 m).
Service (or Maintenance) Factor
Is the ratio of illuminance provided by an aged system with dirty
luminaries to the illuminance of the same system when new.
Single Point Luminaire
See self-contained luminaire.
Slave Luminaire
Luminaire supplied from a central emergency power source and
not having its own internal secondary supply.
Sustained Luminaire
See Combined Luminaire.
Uniformity Ratio
The ratio of the minimum illuminance to the average illuminance
applied to the values on the working plane.
Utilisation Factor at Zero Reflectance (U.F.O.)
Calculates the proportion of the light output from a lamp that fall
directly on the floor taking in consideration room indexes and type
of diffusers being used.

Exit/Safety Signs should comply with the requirements of the Sign
Viewing distances for self-illuminated signs are determined by:

Where direct sight of an emergency exit is not possible, an

assist progression towards the emergency exit.

replaced by 24 December 1998.

Our conversion module has an 8 way terminal for lamp
and mains connections. Pins 14 will eventually be
connected to your mains HF control gear, (or one pin may
be linked to another lamp holder if the HF gear runs
multiple lamps.) Pins 58 will eventually be connected to
the new delegated emergency lamp.
Conversion Procedure
We recommend that you work with one wire at a time to

avoid confusion or miswiring.
It makes no difference the type of HF mains control gear

being converted, or the amount of lamps being run from
it, the principle illustrated below remains the same.

Every month the unit checks for a lamp fault,

that the battery is connected, the charger is
functioning and that the unit operates in
emergency mode. Every six months the unit
carries out the same test but also discharges
the battery for a 1-hour emergency test.
Annually the unit performs the same tests and
also a full 3 hours emergency test.

Many MEWW luminaires are available with a

Self-Test option (suffix ST). Self-Test
luminaires are equipped with an integral
device, which automatically performs routine
checks and reports operational status with an
LED and Buzzer. The tests are automatically
conducted to a regime, which exceeds BS5266.
This facility removes the need for time

consuming and expensive manual testing and
provides the assurance that the emergency
lighting is functioning.

The unit incorporates a Site Commissioning

feature. This automatically initiates a full 3hour test 48 hours after the unit is first
energized (only is the previous 24 hours were
free from supply interruptions).
The unit will test during periods of low risk i.e.

when the normal lighting supply is switched
off. If when the scheduled test is due the
normal supply is on, the test will be postponed
until the supply is switched off. If the normal
supply is permanently on then the test will
automatically initiate after four days.

DEFINITIONS
In these conditions the below
expressions shall have the following
meanings.
(a) MEWW means MEWW LTD
(b) Customer means any person,
firm or company that receives a
quotation and or places an order
with MEWW LTD.
(c) Goods Every item of goods
supplied by MEWW and any work
carried out to any goods supplied
by the customer or any services
carried out by MEWW.

despatching any goods until the Buyer
tenders the purchase money to

GENERAL
All contracts for the sale of MEWW
Products are subject to the below
Condition of Sale. These Conditions
shall prevail any conditions that the
customer may seek to impose in the
event of an inconsistency between the
two parties.
TITLE
(a) Both legal and equitable
ownership of the goods is to
remain vested in MEWW until the
goods have been paid for in full.
However once the goods have
been delivered the risk in the
goods will pass to the buyer.
QUOTATION
(a) MEWW Ltd reserves the right to
refuse acceptance of an order
based upon a quotation unless
the quotation is stated to be open
for a specific period and the
quotation has not been
withdrawn in that period.
(b) All goods unpaid for but delivered

to the buyer must be held in a
fiduciary capacity as bailee on
behalf of MEWW and if required
the buyer shall be responsible for
storing the goods in such away
that they can be identified as
being held in a fiduciary capacity.
(b) Any reduction in quantities or

variation in the specification
quoted to the customer entitles
MEWW to adjust the rates of
prices applicable thereto.
(c) Failure to settle any outstanding

amount in accordance with the
terms specified on the invoice of
the goods, shall give MEWW, its
employees or agents the right to
repossess the goods and if
necessary enter the premises for
that purpose, with or without
notice and without liability and at
its option to avail itself of any
other level remedy.
PRICES
All orders are executed in accordance
with the agreed price discount ruling
at the date of despatch, unless
otherwise agreed in writing.
SAMPLES
All samples submitted with a
quotation or at the customers request
must be returned within 90 days of
receipt, and maybe chargeable if not
returned.
PAYMENT
(a) Unless otherwise agreed in
writing, payment for the goods in
full (without any deduction by the
way of offset or counter claim)
shall be payable with accordance
to the specified terms stated on
the invoice. Payment by cheque
shall not be deemed to constitute
payment until; the cheque is
honoured.
(b) MEWW reserves the right to
charge interest in respect of
overdue accounts. In addition
MEWW is entitled to recover all
direct expenses, collection
agencies fees, solicitors fees,
accounts fees, incurred while
attempting to collect or collecting
outstanding amounts.
(c) The customer shall not be
allowed to be entitled to refuse or

goods that have not been paid for.
CARRIAGE
All orders exceeding the net value of
300.00 include free delivery, for one
complete delivery to one specified
destination. Extra carriage charges
may apply to Northern Ireland, Jersey,
and Eire.
LOST OR DAMAGED/GOODS IN
TRANSIT
(a) MEWW Ltd will repair or replace
free of charge goods damaged in
transit or not delivered to the
customers specified address,
provided the price quoted
includes carriage charges (but
not otherwise).
(b) Any claims of alleged shortages
will only be considered if MEWW
receives written details of the
goods in question within two days
of receipt of goods, in order to
forward the claim to the
contracted carrier and meet its
requirements for submitting a
claim.
DELIVERY & RISK

(a) MEWW will endeavour to deliver
all the goods ordered, repaired or
replaced within the estimated
time of delivery, but shall not be
liable for failure of despatch and
this shall not entitle the
customer to terminate the
contract.
(b) Once the goods have been
delivered to the customer, the
risk in the goods shall be passed
to the customer as specified in
these conditions. MEWW shall
have no responsibility for the
delay in delivery incurred from
lack of instructions or default in
payment or otherwise by the
customer.
(c) Unless otherwise specified, the
goods will be delivered to the last
known business address of the
customer.
(d) MEWW reserves the right to
charge for packing as crates,
pallets, stillages, or skids,
however the amount charged will
be refunded if the packaging is
returned within one month of
delivery.
(e) Once the goods are ready for
delivery and if for any reason the
customer does not arrange or
accept delivery, MEWW reserves
the right to invoice and be paid for
the goods as if they have been
delivered. In addition MEWW shall
arrange storage for the goods and
forward the storage charges to
the customer until such time the
customer arranges collection or
accept delivery.
(f)
Any specific delivery instructions

must be given to MEWW at the
time of order, however MEWW
reserves the right to charge for
delivery once these specific
instructions have been received.
GOODS RETURN
All goods supplied against a firm
order can not be returned under any
circumstances without the written
consent of MEWW, and maybe subject
to a handling charge.
COPYRIGHTS/PATTERNS
Customers shall indemnify MEWW
against all loss, damage, cost, and
expenses incurred by MEWW as a
result of any claim or infringement of
any patent, copyright, design, trade
mark, resulting from MEWW
manufacturing or modifying goods to
the customers own specification.
WARRANTY
MEWW offers a 3-year warranty on all of
its products, subject to condition of sale
set out in this document. Customers are
advised to take out an insurance policy
against any loss or damage that may be
caused directly or indirectly from the
use of any products supplied by MEWW
(and are not covered in the below
clauses).
(a) MEWW will repair or replace, at
its discretion, goods which are
found to be defective, provided the

customer informs MEWW in
writing of the defect within the
warranty period and satisfies the
following clauses.
(b) The goods have been operated
under normal operating
conditions and have been
subjected to normal use as per
specification and installation
Manuel.
(c) The goods are returned to MEWW
factory address at the customers
expense.
(d) The goods have not been
subjected to any modification of
any other work or than routine
maintenance.
(e) The default not relating solely to
any customers specified or
submitted specification or design.
(f)
All goods, parts replaced shall

become the property of MEWW.
(g) MEWW shall not accept any costs

including abort or liability
incurred by the customer or any
third party in replacing or
repairing defective goods.
(h) MEWW will test alleged faulty
goods at the request and expense
of the customer and provide a
written report outlining the test
result. MEWW will not accept any
liability beyond the point outlined
in clause (a) of this section.
(i)
The customer shall fully imdenify

MEWW against all losses,
damages, costs action, claims,
fees Legal, or other expenses.
(a) MEWW may incur in

consequences of the goods or
connected goods where directly
or indirectly involved in a claim
under the customer Protection
Act of 1987 unless the alleged
default is confirmed to be a
manufacturing default.
INFORMATION
All specification, data, drawings and
any other technical information only
remain the property of MEWW unless
written consent have been issued by
MEWW.
LEGAL
(a) The validity of construction and
performance of this contract
shall be governed in all respects
by English Law and is subject to
the sole jurisdiction of the
English courts.
(b) No oral statements made by the
customer or MEWW, its
employees or agents shall form a
part of this contract. All
statements must be confirmed in
writing.
