ROB NORMAN EXPLAINS HOW VBH MAKES COMPLIANCE

TO DOCUMENT Q VERY SIMPLE

ts the subject that the industrys been talking

about for some months and its finally here.

Much has already been written, but to recap, from

1st October window and doors installed in new
build properties in England and some of those
in Wales must comply with the requirements of
Building Regulations Approved Document Q.
The aim of the document is to increase the level
of security in NEW BUILD homes and in existing
buildings that have been converted into housing.
This is to be achieved by increasing the level of
security in windows and entrance doors. Document
Q does not affect replacement products.
It is down to the people responsible for the building
work, such as the designer, builder or installer, to
ensure that the work complies. Of course, they will
need documented proof from the fabricator to pass
on to Building Control, and failure to comply may
and VBH can help in choosing the best route, but
result in the building owner being served with an

produced to a specification that has been tested
Document Q is applicable to all new build/ to, and passed, the PAS24:2012 security standard

where the windows or doors are manufactured.
Manufacturers producing bespoke timber windows
Conversely, products manufactured in England and doors will have to have their own products
and Wales do not have to comply with Document tested or demonstrate compliance to Appendix B
Q if they are being installed outside of those two of Document Q, which lays down a specification for

countries.
As when any new guideline or legislation is
announced, there has been much gnashing of teeth
and confusion within the industry about what
Document Q means and what fabricators need to
do to comply.
VBH are producing a selection of Document Q
Compliance Packs that will support our fabricating
customers in achieving that compliance.
There are a number of ways to achieve compliance
10 |October 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

On top of the existing PAS24 or product performance

specs, Document Q also calls for a few additional
features such as the fitting of door viewers on main
entrance doors that do not feature clear glass or
do not have a glazed panel adjacent to the door
itself. There is also a requirement to fit a limiter or
chain to such doors, unless there is good reason
not to. The document advises that an example of
this is where a warden may need emergency access
GLAZING

to residents in sheltered housing. In this case an
alternative means of caller identification such as
electronic audio-visual door entry system should
be fitted.
There are also added stipulations about the
maximum allowable letterplate aperture and a
requirement to fit a device to hinder fishing through
that aperture.
It all sounds complicated but it neednt be, as we
at VBH have taken steps to make compliance to
Document Q very easy for our customers.
Our product portfolio of own brand greenteQ and
major market partners such as Maco, Roto and Yale,
among others, enables us to offer our customers
a tailored Document Q solution for all their
applications.
A large part of my job is to work with PVCu and
aluminium systems companies to make sure that
their fabricator network has access to hardware

when a new profile suite is launched, and to work

together for the good of our mutual customers
when new legislation is introduced. Document
Q has been high on the agenda at meetings with
many systems houses these past few months, as
you can imagine.
I mentioned the Compliance Pack a little earlier.
This is something that weve put together for users
of the profiles that weve been in dialogue with. In
short, its all you need to ensure that your windows
and doors comply.
We would love to hear from you to discuss how we
can help.

Managing Director Joe Trueman says, The buzz around
Ultion on social media was something I couldnt ignore,
so I visited the website and was compelled by its
messages.
Truemans sells Ultion as an upgrade cylinder on all its
doors and has been spreading the word. It has added
a dedicated Ultion page to its website, sent an eshot
to existing and potential customers, and created flyers
for all customers, available now, from its three Trade

Ultion outperforms every other lock on the market, and
the marketing is there to back that up, continues Joe.

it as a useful sales tool.
Security is a key issue for our industry, adds Joe. Our
customers are now able to go to homeowners with
important information about home security that speaks
for itself. The clear selling benefits of Ultion are already
helping them win more orders from their competitors.
Brisant CEO Steve Stewart explains: Ultion helps sell
real security in an industry that has been ignoring the

Liniar helps generate energy for eco-house project

wo years ago, Jo and Andy Thompson were living

in social housing at Unity Gardens, Long Sutton,
Lincolnshire - one of the UKs first zero-carbon housing
developments.

a self-build mortgage, continues Andy.

They had resigned themselves to being lifelong renters,

having no spare cash for a deposit; buying or even building
their own home was a pipe dream. We would watch TV
programmes like Grand Designs, but they were utterly
depressing because everyone had such big budgets, says
Andy.
Then one day, the dream of owning their own home became
more of a reality.
Jos mother moved into a semi-detached house in South
Lincolnshire and was sitting outside one day wondering how
she would look after the huge garden as she got older.
In June 2012, Jo and Andy did some sums and took the
plunge by offering to buy some of the garden to build their
own house. Jo comments: My mum was overjoyed when we
offered to buy the land it was her chance to help us and at
the same time, our chance to help her too.

Eco friendly
When it came to looking at house designs, we were inspired
by the development that we used to live in, which was
eco-friendly with no utility bills - and nice and simple. We
employed the help of local Architect Dr Jerry Harrall (www.
drharrall.com) a multi award winning designer of ecofriendly developments.
Jerry, a Chartered Architect, developer and independent
researcher, qualified in 1995 and has accumulated fourteen
years of first-hand experience designing, building, living,
working in and monitoring naturally heated, naturally
ventilated buildings. He has now to his credit designed
14 buildings that hold UKs highest Energy Performance
Certificates, as well as the seven lowest air pressure tests
on record.

Jerry reflects on the Planning process: The first challenge

came after submitting the plans to South Holland District
Council. The planners required a consensus as to whether
to support the application, due to the building being classed
as modern architecture. Luckily, however, the same local
authoritys Building Control team had a completely opposite
approach and championed the designs from the onset.
The issues arose as they were focusing on what wasnt in
the building as opposed to what was. The house has no
foundations, being simply built on a garage floor slab and
has no cavity walls, no plasterboard and no mechanical
ventilation.

The Thompsons previous home, Unity Gardens, is an

award-winning development created and designed by Jerry,
comprising six carbon negative single-storey dwellings
in Lincolnshire. The development was the first nearautonomous housing scheme of its kind and has achieved a
Code for Sustainable Homes Rating of Level 4.
Once Jerry had designed our new home, which wed named
FranklyBee, he submitted the plans keeping it simple to
avoid any hold ups. We then sorted the finance, applying for

The Build
It took 12 months from submitting the plans to beginning
the build.
Andy continues: In March 2014, we moved into a caravan
on-site and building began.
Due to the differences in the way the building was designed,
trades-people had to take a new approach to the way they
worked. Bricklayers, for example, werent required to lay
bricks or leave cavities in the wall.
Our main objective was to build an eco-friendly home with
no utility bills exactly as we had been living in previously.
Jerry explains: The weakest area of a house is traditionally
the windows, as this is where most of the heat is lost. Most
standard house builders will usually get U-values of around
1.7W/m2K - but the aim for FranklyBee was to get below
1.0W/m2K.
Jo says: We hadnt heard of Liniar windows before, but
our architect recommended them as he had used them in
previous projects. We did look at timber as an option, but we
had seen it used in other developments where it had warped
and had problems with the seals. So, as we wanted a large
opening, we didnt want to risk it.

were set on having PVCu from the beginning. We found a

local Liniar installer, Bob Mills, who could help us achieve
our objectives.
Bob ordered windows with Liniar EnergyPlus six-chamber
profile, plastic composite spacer bar, triple glazing and low
emissivity film on the inside and outside to achieve a U-value
of 0.8W/m2K. By using this combination, the heat loss from
the house was reduced by 50%. The windows were installed
on a layer of external insulation as opposed to the usual
cavity, to further increase thermal efficiency.

Modern living
FranklyBee represents modern living, claims Andy, and
were delighted that the building is Energy Positive by 40%
- meaning that it generates 40% more energy that it uses.
Putting that into numbers, our house generates around 5,000
kWh of energy a year, but we only use around 3,000 kWh.
Overall, the build went smoothly from start to finish. It was
constructed exactly as it was designed, and best of all, we
received our first energy bill the other day as wed hoped,
it was actually a cheque!

Top of the caps

The final touch to installing a PVCu conservatory is to fit top caps to hide the framework and provide an attractive
finish. However, a big problem for most conservatory roof manufacturers is in the preparation of their PVCu
single-walled top caps.
Not only do they provide poor thermal efficiency, but due to their flimsy construction they often bend and splay
when cut - making it practically impossible to perform a neat and accurate mitre and leaving the fitter with
ill-fitting parts to make the best of.
One way around this is to opt for aluminium top caps as they are rigid and therefore easier to cut however, they
can bring their own problems - not only do they not have the thermal benefits of PVCu, they are more expensive.
In addition, they are heavier to handle, scratch easily and are difficult to fit. Also, the gasket has to be added to
aluminium top caps manually, costing valuable man hours during the production process.

Best of both worlds

Designed to clip on effortlessly, Liniars twin-walled top caps encapsulate the best of both worlds. They are strong
and durable, making them easy to cut, and the design of the EnergyPlus roof top caps means a Liniar
conservatory is one of the most energy efficient on the market.
Because we are so proud of our product, and confident in its strength, we put it through a series of tests to see
exactly how it would fare in comparison to a single-walled equivalent. The results were conclusive, although no
surprise to us.
As part of the tests, a sample of both profiles was squeezed, twisted, stood upon, sat on and even driven over by
a car. The twin-walled top cap proved to be astoundingly strong while the single-walled samples left much to be
desired just take a look at the photos!

Magnificent mitres
Compound cuts to jack rafters are a joy with a consistent, professional-looking scribe every time. A secure, reliable
one-position location waves goodbye to excessive and uneven leg-splay. Mitred corners fit seamlessly, giving the
roof a beautiful finish.
Available with an unparalleled range of foiled finishes, twin-walled top caps arent the only benefit to buying a
Liniar conservatory roof. Liniars precision factory-fitted woodgrain foils give the authentic appearance of timber
without the maintenance. And, unlike other conservatories, end caps and glazing retainers are also foiled,
ensuring the whole installation matches for a stunning effect.

Bespoke designs
Each Liniar roof is designed on a bespoke basis to your exact specifications and delivered to site with all the parts
youll need and with colours available from stock, Liniars lead times are usually lower than other roof suppliers.

SYNSEAL GROUP SUPPORTS BBC

DIY SOS WAR VETERANS PROJECT

ynseal group companies Masterdor Ltd and

Sheerframe Ltd have helped Nick Knowles and
the BBC DIY SOS team to transform properties
in Manchester and create high quality homes suitable
for British war veterans and local community residents.
In BBC1s two-part special, the DIY SOS team delivered
its most ambitious project to date when it agreed
to refurbish more than 60 houses in Manchesters
New Street and Canada Street. The programme of
building works was undertaken to create an improved,
more resident-friendly neighbourhood and included a
Walking With The Wounded advice and therapy centre
as well as extensive streetscaping work.
Masterdor Ltd was delighted to supply 15 composite
residential doors with Sheerframe outer frames on the
project and supplier partners Select Engineering Asia,
UAP Hardware and Distinction Doors also contributed
associated door components free of charge. The
Masterdor doors were expertly fitted by Glen Bracek of
CLG Joinery who provided on-site installation services.
Sheerframe Ltd provided PVC-U extrusions for energyefficient windows in the 66 homes which were
specially fabricated and fitted by leading window, door
and curtain walling manufacturer and installer CMS
Window Systems.
When we heard what the DIY SOS team were planning
to undertake in Manchester we all wanted to contribute
in a meaningful way, comments Synseals Chief
Executive David Leng, This endeavour was obviously
for such a good cause and the BBC programmes
screened in October were both heart-warming and
inspirational. I would like to thank our associated
Synseal suppliers and fabricator partners for their
additional hands-on support and practical assistance
with this impressive community project.

ENDURANCE LAUNCH COMPOSITE

CLASSICAL COLLECTION

ndurance Doors from Rocal

have just launched their new
Classical Collection, as part
of their ever expanding range of
solid and secure composite doors,
which now boasts 16 colours and
woodgrains inside or out, along
with 11 different frame colours.
This exciting Classical Collection of
door styles, which includes the new
Wentwood and Walton designs, has
been inspired by traditional timber
door designs and those of the
Victorian and Georgian eras. Rocal
was one of the founding companies
in the solid core composite door
market back in 2002 and the relaunch of the Endurance brand
at the back end of 2014 reflects
the new face of the business, as it
looks to cement its position as a
major player in the composite door
market.
Given the nature of these new
door designs, Endurance Doors

expects that consumers will look to

system rather than a handle to
the exterior and theres also the
opportunity to upgrade to the key

Strong colours such as rich red
and racing green are expected to
be popular, along with Chartwell

In 2015 alone there have been
16 new door designs launched
including these latest period

of Walnut and Pearl Grey as new

Stephen Nadin, managing director

of Rocal Group commented:
Over the last 12 months weve

in the business and the Classical

this success. Weve got bold growth

Phoenix Doors: the rise of the doublerebated composite door

hoenix Doors, part of MASCO

demand for its double-rebated

Revolutionary AutoLock

Launched by John Fredericks

or John Fredericks, launching a dynamic, new

than a simple evaluation of current industry
products and then making improvements on what
already exists. Revolutionising a sector takes time,
patience and a commitment to innovation that
will provide a unique solution, which combines
superior quality and lasting guarantees.
As such, the R&D department at John Fredericks

the launch of a new, fully patented product that
will revolutionise door security across the UK and

was an essential part of the product development
according to Managing Director, Steve Darkins.
The unique capabilities of the Autolock maximises
security via IS. cams and hookbolt combinations
that are PAS24 tested. On closing the door, all
locking points are automatically triggered without
any need to activate the lever handle, and a turn of
the key deadlocks the door. This also prevents the
door from bowing as the locking points are always
engaged when the door is closed.

Subsequently, the configuration of the device

completely eliminates warping, twisting and air
leaks thanks to meticulous Austrian design from

SHEERFRAME & CMS TARGET

FUEL POVERTY ERADICATION

igh performance PVCu windows designed and

installed to the right standard, supplemented with
draught proof doors and external wall insulation
(EWI), represent the most powerful weapon that social
landlords have in the fight against stubborn fuel poverty.
That was the message from UK PVCu systems company
Sheerframe, and window, door and curtain walling
fabricator and installer CMS Window Systems, at the latest
seminar in the CMS Technical Masterclass Programme.
Held recently at the companys state of the art educational
facility, the Innovation Hub, the seminar was attended by
more than 25 housing specifiers and managers from local
authorities and housing associations across Scotland.
According to David Strang, Sheerframes Key Accounts
Director, who presented the seminar, the absence of a
joined up strategy to meet the demand for new homes,
coupled with the impracticality of controlling UK energy
prices, means improving the building fabric of our social
housing is the obvious way to help those most at risk from
fuel poverty.
The Scottish Government pledged to eradicate fuel
poverty by 2016, but with only a few months left before
that deadline it seems were a long way from where we are
supposed to be. So we must keep up the drive for better
quality building fabric, particularly in social housing, to
reduce the need for heating in the poorest households
and allow tenants to save money.
Up to 67% of household heat loss is through the windows,
doors and walls so upgrading using todays proven,
thermally superior window and door technology is as high
a priority as boiler and central heating replacement.
Sheerframe window systems are used by CMS to
manufacture all its PVCu windows. The thermal
performance of these windows is optimised thanks to the
design of the multi-chambered Sheerframe 8000 profile
which is reinforced using Thermlock FP. This is a structural
PVC foam fixing reinforcement made from 100% lead,
barium and cadmium free PVC, which eliminates the need
for poorly insulating metal reinforcements it also makes
windows 15% lighter so less demanding for installers.

68 |October 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

David adds: Installing triple glazed Zero Carbon windows

and doors with 0.8 W/m2K U values are increasingly seen
as effective solutions to reducing fuel poverty.
The Sheerframe seminar was the third in the Technical
Masterclass Programme organised by CMS as part of
its support for clients, designed to help them improve
the quality and energy efficiency of their housing
stock. Previous seminars have helped specifiers gain
best practice insights into hardware and security, with
expertise provided by Yale and Securistyle, and the latest
advanced glazing options thanks to technical guidance
from GLASSOLUTIONS Saint-Gobain.
The next seminar will take place in November in
conjunction with Rockwool, with technical insights into
external wall insulation (EWI) on the agenda.

As well as our the energy efficiency of our windows and

R9 PROMISES REVOLUTIONARY
NEW PRODUCT FOR FIT 2016

he company behind Residence 9 the

revolutionary window system that took the
market by storm in 2009 is promising similar
revelations at the FIT Show in April 2016.
Eclectic Systems has invested heavily in research
and development, machinery, stock, and marketing to
ensure that it will hit the ground running with the new
system as soon as it is launched.
The company is taking one of the largest stands at
the FIT Show (116m2) to show off the new product,
after unwavering success with Residence 9 at previous
shows.
Fabricators and installers could be manufacturing and
installing our revolutionary new product within weeks
of it launching at the FIT Show, promised marketing
manager Sarah Hitchings.
It is the first show at which the company will be
exhibiting since it was acquired by the DW3 Group in
April 2015, along with sister company Window Widgets,
Solidor and Nice Door Panels.
The FIT Show 2013 was instrumental in the launch of
R9 to the industry, when we displayed the innovative
window system properly for the first time to fabricators
and installers. The Telford-based show is a key
marketing route for us to get our message out to the

73 |October 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

industry because our relationship with fabricators and

installers is vital to the success of the launch, and The
FIT Show enables to make as a big a splash as possible.
All details regarding the new product have been kept
completely under wraps. Anyone fortunate enough to
be allowed access to any of the designs have been
obliged to sign non-disclosure contracts, which means
potential customers, competitors and journalists have
been left completely in the dark, except for a few
teasing details.
It will be a super premium option that will create a
whole new market, just like R9 did, Sarah said.
Residence 9 is a premium window system designed to
replicate the 19th century flush sash timber window
that can be considered for use in conservation areas
due to its authentic appearance. Thanks to its success,
other systems companies and fabricators have seen the
market potential and have launched their own flush
sash alternatives as a result.
Residence 9 can be found at stand 370. To find out more
about them, visit www.residence9.co.uk.
The Fabricator Installer Trade (FIT) Show takes place
at The International Centre Telford on the 12th, 13th
and 14th April 2016. Further information is available at

has moved quickly to recruit an
enthusiastic new sales manager to
help manage the influx of inquiries
and he cant wait to tune in to the
companys success.
If the name Phil Turner doesnt ring
a bell with those in the industry,
then the face and voice might
spark memories of him leading an
impromptu sing-along session with
his guitar in the bar of the Holiday
Inn after the Gala Dinner at the last
FIT Show.
Originally from Cheshire but now
living in Stoke-on-Trent, Phil has
25 years of industry experience
behind him, specialising in fixings
and fastenings. He joins Liniar from
Rapier Star where he spent more
than 11 years as Technical Sales

stockists, builders merchants and
directly with the window industry.
I began my career as an office
junior before moving on to
technical support and then being
sent out on the road. And Ive been
on the road ever since, says Phil.
Ive always been very passionate
about the technical side of things
and thats one of many elements
that attracted me to Liniar.
When the position came up at Liniar
Phil couldnt resist the challenge,
and after meeting Chief Executive
Roger Hartshorn his mind was
easily made up.
I must admit that I was a bit
nervous about meeting Roger, the

76 |October 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

man behind the Liniar brand, but

he was just really down to earth.
We had a pleasant chat and then he
offered me the job. Best interview
Ive ever had!
Working with Business Development
Director Tony Basile, Phil will be
visiting window fabricators all
over the UK, then focusing on the
Northern Region in the longer
term. We caught up with Phil to
find out what attracted Liniars new
Northern Region Sales Manager of
Building Supplies and Roofs to the
company.
The main appeal was the brand.
I would only ever sell top quality
products and the opportunity to
work for a large organisation with
such an immense reputation was
just too good to turn down.
The installation supplies are really
top of the range and I cant wait
to get out and meet customers to
show them exactly how good they
are and Liniars conservatory roofs
are second to none.
Innovation is the philosophy at
Liniar; everything is designed with
quality in mind. Everyone Id spoken
to about them had the same opinion
Liniar just do it right.
In my short time working here
Ive been impressed by an almost
overwhelming

enthusiasm. Everyones behind the

goal.

working for a company like that?

Passionate about his profession,
Phils other great love, apart from
his wife and four-year-old daughter,
is music.
Ive been in various bands for more
than 14 years as a singer and a
drummer. Im afraid I am that guy
who picks up a guitar at a party and
starts a sing song.
So how did the impromptu gig in
the hotel bar come about at the last
FIT Show?
I just think its a fun way to bring
people together and have a good
time. Everyone likes to let their hair
down and have a good old sing
song. Id taken my guitar along with
me, just in case, and couldnt resist
strumming a few tunes and getting
everyone to join in. It ended up
being a brilliant night!
So what are Phils ambitions for his
new role?
My aim is to build on the brand
and make my mark with Liniar. Id
like my contribution to have an
influence on the future success of
the business. Im looking forward to
being part of this excellent team,
working with our valued customers
and bringing even greater success.
Thats certain to be music to the
ears of Phils colleagues!

Swish launches new suite of marketing materials

Ultimately we want our fabricators to enjoy unrivalled support from us

wish Windows & Doors, the most widely

recognised consumer-facing brand on the market,
has launched a comprehensive suite of marketing
materials that reinforces its number one position.
Designed to help retail companies sell in todays
increasingly competitive environment, the marketing
package has been in development for several months,
and forms part of a wider strategy by Swish to offer its
customers the best industry support available today.
We have long been recognised for the high level of
support we offer our customers, but this is substantially
more than we have ever offered before, Gerald
Allen, Swish Windows & Doors Marketing Manager,
explained. The retail market is where Swishs strength
is unrivalled, and while we have also published
professional new trade literature, retail is where we
have focused to generate and maintain demand.
Available now, Swishs retail customers can now access
the following:
28-page retail brochure
An experts guide to buying window and doors
Maintenance guide
Recommend a Friend chequebooks and vouchers
Showroom posters, certificates and roller banners
Retail advertising templates
Drop cards
Window sample bags
Stickers and vinyls
And lots more

82 |October 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

We have years of experience understanding what works

and what doesnt when it comes to engaging with the
homeowner and appreciating their needs, Gerald said.
We bolstered this with extensive consumer research
to further understand consumer behaviour, which
included focus groups and 500 consumer interviews.
We have distilled this experience to provide practical
tools that will help engage, educate and ultimately
sell, taking away some of that uncertainty that is often
present in a tough retail environment.
These invaluable marketing materials will soon be
joined by two other initiatives.
The first is a new marketing portal where customers can
order stock materials and create dedicated brochures
and mailers, which will include their logo, their contact
details, their text, and their pictures.
The second is a new website, which promises to be
different and more relevant than what is currently
available from other systems companies. Simple to
navigate, and optimised for all platforms (including
mobile phones) the site will educate homeowners on
the advantages of the Swish system, and will proactively
generate leads.
Ultimately we want our fabricators to enjoy unrivalled
support from us, Gerald said. This substantial
investment has been made with them in mind, to
secure loyalty for them from their customers by simply
being the very best in the market.

utumn is a season full of exhibitions that

pretty much cover just about every aspect
of construction. Whether its ways to reduce
heating costs, aesthetics, solar control, safety or just
novel concepts that simply make life all that more
simple or beautiful, there has been something for
just about everyone from builders and installers to
architects and home DIY enthusiasts.
At the end of September, the Homebuilding and
Renovation Show exhibitors saw self-build and
renovation experts descend on Excel in London. Here
visitors were offered free one-to-one advice regarding
both current and forthcoming projects.
Inspirational home renovation ideas were displayed
to an eager DIY audience. Furniture, ground source
heating, home automation and staircase renovation
were just a few of the key areas explored by
homeowners and architects evaluating the next must
have in aspirational living.
The newly launched UK Construction Week began at
the beginning of October and saw the coming together
of no less than 9 Construction Shows under the roof of
the NEC in Birmingham. A great number of professional
companies were exhibiting across five halls at the
exhibition centre, with a vast array of innovative design
and high specification products, ultimately on display
to attract sales, inspire installers and to make life safer
and more beautiful for the all important end user.

there, with many companies remaining happy about

putting aside budget for these types of events. Face
to face interaction with potential new customers
was considered extremely important as a means of
awareness and corporate growth.
As with any trade show footfall varies from day to day,
but the response was a positive one from exhibitors
regarding the Build Show. Likewise, being incorporated
into UK Construction Week, sitting alongside trades
that complement such as gardening and roofing,
undoubtedly helped those exhibiting increase product
awareness. WindowWare certainly looked enthused
and pleased with the results of their exhibition.
For the DIY aficionados Grand Designs Live was the
platform for discovery, with the implication from
exhibitors that quality, security and cost saving benefits
were the most important considerations to many
visiting consumers.
Robert Appleby an installer for the Skylight company
stated that the show had been a resounding success
and the decision to exhibit had been the right one.
The Scottish company manufactures bespoke skylights
and glazing systems that make optimum use of light
in all sized roofing projects. With Secured By Design
accreditation, the rooflights, which are manufactured in
triple glazed units, certainly made quite an impact, with
heavy duty security reflected in the companys on-stand
presence. It certainly was a crowd puller at the show.

Whilst installers, builders and architects could revel in

a Beer Festival alongside the potential of tomorrows
products, which will undoubtedly provide key aspects
to help grow their businesses, I was keen to explore
more than just the figures on footfall regarding some
of these events which combine trade with consumer
audiences.
After spending some time visiting the exhibitions it
was evident that they remain popular and for exhibition
organisers there appears to be a buoyant market out

made an impact with homeowners, which had resulted
in very positive show sales for Chimella Ltd. The

Consumers seem to be drawn to reduce energy costs
without losing anything in terms of product quality.
On discussing this with visitors who had just left the
Skylight stand, they wanted security that would add
value without anything detracting from the overall
look of their home when considering their loft
extension. A couple who had invested in no less than
three Chimellas, had purchased two for themselves and
one as a gift, having seen the energy saving benefits for
themselves in a friends London home.
For sure, ROI was key for many people regarding the
decision making process, which is not particularly news
to anyone, but that design-led living seems far more
achievable is becoming increasingly apparent to them.
The message that they can have it all seems to be
inspiring the crowd to invest.

Supercut 5 helps boost output by 400%

ts not often that the acquisition of one machine

can increase output by more than 400% - but
thats exactly whats happened at Chigwell
Window Centre after they recently purchased a
new Supercut 5 from Wegoma.
Chigwell Window Centre was formed in early 2014
by Sunny and Ammo Singh, with a workforce of two.
Based inHainault, Essex, the company manufactures
and installs uPVC and aluminium doors and
windows for the domestic andcommercial sectors.
The speedy rise of the company was compounded
when they approached a neighbouring firm,
Chigwell Construction, with a view to securing
a contract to supply windows. The Managing
Director, Dean Floyd, was so impressed that instead
of awarding them the contract, he bought into the
company.

Since then they have relocated to 10,000 sq ft

premises and invested more than half a million
pounds in machinery and vehicles in the last
month alone.
This astronomical rise means they now have a
25-strong workforce and have increased output
from between 100-150 windows per week to 500!
One of the major reasons behind the dramatic
increase in output is the companys investment
in a state-of-the-art Supercut 5 machine from
Wegoma.
The latest machining centre for uPVC profiles, the

The value of consistency

well-known fabricator in the north east of

England sadly went into administration recently
and closed down. Their equipment was sold by
online auction as has now become the norm and whilst
most of it sold quite well the prices were generally
speaking not that high with the exception of the two
Stuga machines (and one other). These two machines
were not the latest or most sought after technology but
nonetheless both fetched amazingly high prices. Some
people expressed surprise at the prices a Stuga Autocut
saw center and Ecoline prepping center fetched but at
Stuga no one was surprised. Stuga machines normally
fetch excellent values on the second hand market and
the main reasons are very simple.
Stuga is not only the manufacturer rather than a dealer
but is also a British manufacturer based here in this
country with all of the benefits that brings. The Stuga
brand has been produced in Gt Yarmouth, Norfolk, since
1986 and very nearly every machine the company has
ever made is operational in the market today. There
are numerous machines supplied by dealers that have
come from other parts of the world (mainly Europe)
that were long ago scrapped, sometimes because they
were worn out and sometimes because of technology
or obsolescence. This doesnt really happen to a Stuga
because the company will always refurbish any worn out
machine to make it as good as new and obsolescence is
designed out on an ongoing basis.

The fast pace of modern technological change creates a

situation whereby machines or parts of them regularly
become obsolete and this can be a major headache
for the manufacturer. Stuga often gets no notice of
components becoming unavailable and sometimes
it is only at time of order this comes to light. When
it happens the company has to very quickly design a
work-around. These work arounds then have to form
part of a long term design update, either just as they
are or to be improved upon later. In some cases these
design changes can be major, especially if they require
new software to be written. Stuga has always had inhouse design staff to work on these complications and
a considerable degree of success has been achieved.
Stugas constant involvement in these evolutionary
design changes sometimes leads to complete new
94 |October 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

designs or major improvements on old ones.

Stuga often purchases back its own machines either

as part-exchange or simply because they have become
surplus to requirement for a multitude of reasons such
as insolvency, stopping fabrication etc. When a Stuga
machine comes in that is anything more than (say)
two years old it is fully refurbished to as near to the
latest specification as possible. This will often create
an almost new version that is very close to the same
or similar machine when it was new. A classic example
is the 76 Flowlines that were built before the machine
was recreated as the ZX3. More than 20 of these old
Flowlines dating around the early 2000 to 2002 period
have been totally rebuilt to the latest ZX3 upgrade
specification. These are back in the market place
producing windows with a higher output than when
they were new and with many excellent design updates
engineered into them.
Potential customers often call Stuga seeking to
purchase machines that have been on the market for
very many years and they may be looking for new or
refurbished ones but they are satisfied that whatever
they purchase it will be able to be updated, improved
and kept in service for many more years. They also
know they can rely on the legendary Stuga back-up that
ensures peace of mind on a daily basis.
To return to those machines at the recent auction the
purchasers were prepared to pay a lot of money for quite
old Stugas sound in the knowledge that they could
get the parts, have the machines serviced and get the
benefits of the most recent updates and enhancements
that will have been introduced on an ongoing basis.
They also knew they could call on Stuga expertise to
move the machines and re-commission them as Stuga
has a range of options available for re-siting their
machines from a simple install right through to a full
decommissioning, move and recommission package.
For further information on all Stuga products and
services please call 01493 742348 and ask for

THE BIG PUSH IS ON TO FIND THE MASTER FITTER

2016: Who will take the 5,000 first prize?

he search is on to find the FIT Show Master Fitter

for 2016. Organised in association with FENSA
with live finals taking place at The FIT Show on
the 12th and 13th April and 10,000 in prize money to
be handed out to the winners and runners up at the
Gala Dinner, the excitement is building once again.

of identifying and rewarding the skills of installers at

the top of their game. The 5,000 first prize is fantastic
of course but our experience is that most competitors
are driven by pride. Our assessors report that the skill
levels in the marketplace are higher than ever and we
believe that will show in the competition.

Next year the Finals Pavilion, in which finalists will

compete against each other and under the close gaze of
GQAs expert assessors, is located in the main entrance
to The FIT Show adjacent to the main registration areas
so bigger crowds than ever are guaranteed, adding to the
pressure for competitors. A total of just six finalists will
compete by replacing a window, installing a residential
door and for the first time, each will be expected to
install a solid roof with all products combining to
form a porch configuration. A tricky residential fault
challenge will also be used to separate the winner
from the runners up. The replacement windows are
provided by sponsors Liniar, residential doors supplied
by Truedor and Supalite are supplying the solid roofs.

The entry form is live on The FIT Show website at www.

fitshow.co.uk/master-fitter-challenge/applicationform. All entrants successfully answering the criteria
required at that stage will undergo a telephone
interview when a number of technical questions will
be asked. All applicants successfully completing this
phase of the process will then receive a site visit by one
of the team of assessors to observe working practices
under site conditions. Only then will the assessors
choose six finalists to take part in the Live Finals at
Telford in April.

Now in its third outing the popularity of The FIT

Show Master Fitter Challenge is greater than ever, the
decision to build the Finals Pavilion in such a prominent
location evidence of its importance. GQAs Mick Clayton,
whose team will for the third time assess entrants and
choose the winner, says the standards will be tougher
than ever in the next few months: The Master Fitter

Master Fitter Challenge The best challenge yet!

t hardly seems like five minutes since the last one, but
the FIT show is on the horizon once again and for the
third time in a row we are delighted to be running the
Master Fitter Challenge.
What is it that excites me about the Master Fitter
Challenge? It is the fact that installers across the industry
have the chance to get involved and showcase their skills
in the pressure pot environment of the live final at the
FIT Show but not before they have successfully passed a
series of interviews and on the job assessments from the
GQA team.
Installation as we all recognise is simply THE most
critical part of the whole process. That is not to take
anything away from the great products which are
manufactured across the industry; but we all know that a
great product fitted badly is a bad product in the eyes of
the consumer.
In my view installers have never really been given the
credit they deserve; they are a pivotal part of the industry,
the greatest sector by number, and through selling to the
consumer are the people who start the process which

Seal of approval

enables the rest of the industry to prosper.

The Master Fitter Challenge is the chance for them to
get the recognition they deserve and for those who really
want to, the chance to fully test themselves across a range
of installation disciplines.
The challenge at the FIT Show 2016 is to fit a window,
a composite door, and a solid tile roof; it is going to test
the six teams of finalists to the limit. But the process
starts right now; installers interested in taking part need
to apply straight away the closing date is the 30th
November.
I would encourage as many installers as possible to get
involved; lets make it the best challenge yet!
Apply to take part in the Master Fitter Challenge by going

assessors and for the excellent way they delivered the

GQA qualifications with very little disruption to the day to
day workload of our team.

It is a real seal of approval for the high tech manufacturing

company which produces over 5000 sealed units each
week including toughened and soft coated units at its
20,000 square feet factory. All units are manufactured
and accredited to BS EN1279-5 and the emphasis on
quality doesnt stop there.

This is the start point for us as a company; all new

employees will go through the same apprenticeship
training which is so important if we want to attract young
people to our industry, and I will encourage existing
employees to go further and sign up for NVQ level 3
qualifications.

Quality is a real watchword throughout the company

and Managing Director Eric Falisi wanted the companys
employees to have the opportunity to operate to standards
just as high as those used in the manufacturing process.

Paul Gray from The Vocational College (pictured with

Eric, Sean Hayes from GQA, and members of the Vetroseal
team) was equally delighted.

Working with GQA approved centre The Vocational College

he enrolled his staff to undertake a process of learning
and qualification which would give them skills to carry
with them throughout their career and which at the same
time would benefit the company.
The investment in these qualifications for my employees
will help the company to gain future contracts and keep
us ahead of our competitors. I am very proud of them all
and very happy. Ours is a very competitive sector of the
industry, so the better qualified our staff the more chance
we have of continuing to be successful.

This was a large programme. It was fantastic to see

a company commit to putting a significant number
of employees onto a learning programme all at once
and their enthusiasm to learn was a credit to them all.
Achieving their NVQ level 2 qualifications will help them
as individuals, and will help the company to prosper; it is a
very sound investment on their part, and we look forward
to working with them to implement a level 3 programme.
GQA has been writing qualifications with and for the
industry for over 25 years. Further information on GQA
Qualifications can be found at:

Passive House Ratings

hermoseal Group, the UKs leading

manufacturer of warm edge spacer systems
and supplier to the insulated glass (IG)
industry for over 35 years has achieved top Passive
House Institute (PHI) ratings of phA for Thermobar
warm edge spacer tube and phA+ for Thermoflex
silicone rubber flexible warm edge spacer. These
are both ratings for the coldest Arctic Climate and
all regions with lower requirements.

The PHI is an independent research institute with

the only internationally recognised, performancebased energy standard in construction. The PHI
has played a crucial role in the development of
the Passive House concept and has since assumed
a leading position with regards to research on the

development of construction concepts, building

components, planning tools and quality assurance
for especially energy efficient buildings. It holds a
Database of Certified Passive House Components
which are rated and classified based on hygiene
and efficiency within the criteria of a Passive
House. See www.passiv.de and select Component

their relevant certificates.

Thermoseal Groups Sales Director Mark Hickox

submitted the Groups spacers for ratings and
shares his thoughts: Achieving the highest
Passive House ratings is yet another indication
that Thermobar and Thermoflex Warm Edge
Spacers are the most energy efficient rigid and

flexible spacers available on the worldwide
market. Thermobar and Thermoflex also both have
Bundesverband Flachglas Data Sheets detailing
their thermal performance of 0.14W/mK and
0.135W/mK respectively. They are, of course, fully
tested to EN1279 standards and many additional
worldwide standards.

We are delighted with the thermal performance of

our products and also the quality and consistency
we maintain through our spacer bar manufacturing
sites which are monitored and developed in line
with our innovation centre. We are currently
installing various new production lines to increase
the capacity of our warm edge spacers to meet
the demand from an influx of international
enquiries we have coming through. Achieving PHI

certification now is excellent timing as it rates our

products to an internationally recognised standard
and puts our products where they belong at the

Guardian SunGuard solar glass

provides butterflies a safe haven

ertrange, Luxembourg, October 22, 2015

Butterflies are beautiful and delicate creatures
and very climate sensitive. So when planners
were designing the Konya Tropical Butterfly Garden in
Konya, Turkey, they recognised it was vital to secure the
best, most reliable means of maintaining stable heat
and humidity in the museum.
Thats why they turned to Guardian Industries Glass
Group in Europe, a leading manufacturer of highquality commercial, residential, interior and automotive
glass products, to provide the nearly 1,500 pieces of
different-sized glass needed during construction.
Specifically, they selected Guardian SunGuard SNX
60/28, which lets 60% of sunlight in but keeps out 72%
of the suns heat allowing the temperature inside
the building to be precisely regulated. The SunGuard
eXtra selective (SNX) range is the highest performing
solar protective glass Guardian has to offer. This glass
also offers excellent aesthetics, due to its neutral
transparent colour and its low reflection.
Ensuring a constant tropical climate of 26 C and
80% humidity inside the glass-covered building was a
particular challenge in Konya, which has a continental

138|October 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

climate with large temperature swings between the

winter and summer months. The construction area
covered 380,000 square meters.
The museum, which opened in July 2015, features
Europes biggest butterfly flight zone of 1,600 square
meters. Some 6,000 butterflies of 15 species and 20,000
tropical plants of 98 species live in the museum.
Guardian SunGuard glass not only helps to protect
this rare and valuable plant and animal life, but it also
makes for a more energy-efficient and environmentally
friendly building. The Konya museum project received
a LEED Silver certificate, making it the first museum
in Turkey to be so recognised. (LEED is the Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design rating system,
developed by the U.S. Green Building Council.)
SunGuard products can help buildings to earn the
LEED points needed to earn the much-coveted LEED
certification.
The Konya Seluklu Muncipality worked with the
international architectural and planning firm Arup
on this project and hired the Akim-Eva business
partnership to handle the actual construction.
