The THING on page iii

The face/doll is a Daruma. It is
a Japanese
custom based
on a legendary
holy man. He
was so committed to his vows that
he cut out his eyes to avoid distractions.
The Daruma is used at the beginning of a major activity to represent a commitment. The Daruma
has no pupils in his eyes. The person committing paints in one eye
at the beginning of a commitment,
and at the successful completion,
he colors in the other eye.

Editors Notes
Be patient. The format may
change here and there, but I will
settle down with something decent.
This is the convention issue with
lots of pictures, so there is not
much advice. I learn a lot by
reading magazines like Bonsai
Today, ABS, and BCI. I like the
centerfolds more than some of the
articles. I may not have a tree like
those, but little bits of ideas lodge
in my head and it helps me to deal
with unusual and ugly trees.
Now if you really want to see the
pictures let me know. If you send
me your email address I will Email
you a file in full color. You can
even print out the pages you want.
Even better. Now, the electronic
Email issue has links in it, and you
can go directly to the web from
your issue of Florida Bonsai-that
is neat. If you like, you can go to
a source on an issue, or to see our
advertisers sites. Click the address
and you go directly to that site.
(Just in case it occurs to someonedont tell me you clicked this
magazine with your finger and it
did not go to the web.)
Speaking of Center Folds, we have
one in this issue. Tear it out and
hang it somewhere conspicuous.
Just slip it off the staples, dont
tear it. Pete Woods covers the
material so well I wont repeat it.

THE DISNEY AND BSF PARTNERSHIP:

PREPARING YOUR TREES FOR

THE 2004 EPCOT FLOWER AND GARDEN SHOW

Peter Wood Central Florida

he 2004 Walt Disney EPCOT International Flower and Garden Festival will be held at
EPCOT from April 16th through May 30th. BSF has had an ongoing partnership agreement
w i t h Walt Disney World (WDW) for 10 very successful years to loan and maintain a bonsai display
throughout the show period. The trees on loan to Disney in 2003 were all stunning!

onsider applying to exhibit your bonsai at EPCOT next year! In addition to the honor of
having thousands of people see your art, each exhibitor will receive two Disney World tickets
(maximum two tickets per family) that can be used at any single WDW Park. Disney provides hotel
accommodations for the nights prior to setup and strike, and will reimburse for travel expenses. WDW
also includes insurance for trees and pots in the unlikely event of damage. Trees will be exhibited in
full sun or shade or partial sun, as you designate, for 6 weeks and receive regular care from local BSF
members and the WDW Horticulture staff. Local BSF members, also present a weekly lecture on bonsai
basics for EPCOT visitors.

he BSF/EPCOT Committee makes its selections in January 2004, so applications for 2004 must be
received by December 31, 2003. This year the BSF/Epcot Committee will try bonsai selection on
a nameless basis. The committee chair will know the applicant names, however the selection committee
will not.

1. Disney and BSF have stipulated the minimum heights (pot and tree) of the two tree categories. Class A
trees must not be less than 30 inches. Class B trees must not be less than 15 inches. This requirement is
adhered to strictly. For 2004, 15 Class A trees will be selected and 5 Class B trees will be selected.
2. If more than one tree is proposed, copy and complete one application form for each tree.
3. All trees must be anchored (i.e., wired or tied securely) in the container by the owner. Disney will secure
each tree by the pot to its stand or resting area.
4. Color photographs (3x 5 minimum) of all tree(s) proposed are required. If you have 8 x 10 photos,
even better. These photos are required for the BSF/EPCOT Committee in selecting the trees to be
recommended to the Disney horticulture staff.
5. For 2004 a selection process including nameless applicants will be trialed.
6. The EPCOT Flower and Garden Festival will be held from April 16 through May 30, 2004. Specific
information regarding the set up and strike dates and times will be forwarded to the selected applicants.
7. Disney provides hotel reservations for out of town residents while at Epcot, i.e., one night each for
delivering and picking up bonsai. A meal allowance is provided for each exhibitor and expenses are
allowed for car mileage. Trailer rental expenses are covered, so pooling for transportation should be
considered. Appropriate receipts must support all expenses. More details of this will be provided later.
8. Disney will provide two (any single park) tickets valid for one year for selected applicants (two tickets
per family maximum).
9. Send your application and photos to Peter Wood, Chair BSF/EPCOT Coordination Committee, 3284
Lordmall Ct., Oviedo, FL 32765, before Dec. 31, 2003. For information Email: woodpk@juno.com
10. This is a Disney program, and they could change anything at any time.

Summary of Epcot Application Requirements and Information:

d. Years in training:

or the 2004 exhibit we would like to see participants from all Districts of Florida, and we hope the
trial addition of the smaller trees will open opportunities for new exhibitors.

or 2004 we will also experiment with acceptance of applications for 5 smaller trees or forest
configurations, with applications for 15 larger trees as in the past. Class A trees must be a
minimum of 30 inches height, and class B trees must be a minimum of 15 inches height. Trees must be
healthy, must be wired into pots, and the pot or slab must not be cracked or damaged. Other factors that
enter into the selection are the variety of species, style, and artistic appearance of each tree.

F
T

his early notice for 2004 is to give you a chance to get photos of your trees, especially deciduous
trees, while they still have their leaves. With a December 31, 2003 application deadline,
photos taken now are necessary. Photos are really the crux of the selection process so need to be as
representative of the trees appearance in April through May as possible.

e encourage every member of BSF who has bonsai meeting the requirements to enter one or
more of them to be selected for the show. The enclosed form gives the information needed
to enter. One or more photos of the tree must accompany each form. Send the application form(s)
and photos to the address noted on the form no later than December 31, 2003. For information Email:
woodpk@juno.com

he honor and satisfaction of exhibiting a tree at this International Festival is tremendous. The
BSF/EPCOT committee uses a fair and demanding process for considering applications, and will
do all possible to assist you in the exhibition process should your tree(s) be selected. Get your photos of
possible entries ready now!

A challenge:
The next time you
have the privilege of
attending a convention visit the materials
storage room. Look
around and try to
imagine that mess
being turned into
individual dramatic
works of art!
The convention had a
great array of Masters
Ernie Kuo did a remarkable job
on this Australian Pine making one mistake at a time. His
explanation is that using power
tools you make 100 mistakes at a
time-your hands only one.
Suthin Sukosolvisit explains
the why and how on this small
tree to a student.

Ben Oki came up with one

of his most creative transformations on this monster Bald
Cypress.

15

There is no way to express

the value and learning experience at these conventions
August 2003

NEVER underestimate the ingenuity and talent of

our own Florida Masters (In random order)

We have
some of the
worlds most
unique specimens, and the
experts who
know this material, and what
to do with it.
Jim Smith
continues to
show us his
magic with

Willowleaf Ficus.
That #1 tree is about
the size of his arm. Jim
did this forest for a
demonstration.
Mary Madison and
Buttonwoods-what
hasnt been said. What
trees! What talent!
This was Marys
Buttonwood workshop.
Lots of people went away
very happy, with a tree to
remember.
Mike Cartrett has been
all over the State and
Country showing people
how and why. Here he
demonstrates what can be
done to a Jabotakaba-it
was a unique solution. The
lucky bidder got this one in
the banquet auction.
Florida Bonsai

16

Then there is Ed Trout.

Here is EdNo, Ben,
No, Edwell, they do
work well together.
These pictures are of
Eds demonstration on an
enormous Pyracameles.

You can see-that is

a big one. This too
made a good auction
bonsai at the banquet.
Another good lesson
on what to do with a
complicated specimen. (I also learned
that the Pyracomeles
vilmorinii is a hybrid
cross between Pyracantha and Osteomeles. Now you know too.)
Ed is one of the best artists in Florida. His efforts for BSF, the many
clubs throughout the State, and the Morikami Museum are outstanding.
Jim Vanlandingham,
signed on to assist Jim
Smith, and we saw and
learned a lot from Jim V. as
well. A great communicator, and terrific demonstrator
on his own, if your club has
not tried him for a program
your are missing a good
one.

17

August 2003

Allen Carver,
stepped in cold turkey
for Jim Moody, who
was ill at the time,
and could not do the
workshop. Here he is
giving advice on a very
strong Bucida Spinosa
in the workshop.
Dont forget that
name. You will see a
lot more of Allen. He
is a very talented, creative artist, and knows his trees. This group got a
good lesson on tempering your design and timing on a tree depending on
its characteristics, both botanical and structural.
Ernie Fernandez was busy on the third
floor styling trees. No one told me he
was doing this. But, I heard the grinder
straining when I got off the elevator.
When I went into the room, most of
what I saw looked like the picture below,
ground up wood everywhere. When I
looked up there he was styling an enormous tree-or what was left of it.
See more of Ernie when you go to the
Fairchild Garden in October.

Information about the program sponsored annually by the Bonsai Society of Miami follows in this issue.
There is nothing more effective for learning about bonsai, acquiring
the materials and tools you need than attending conventions. If that
isnt enough, you get to make and meet good friendsand have fun.

From The Morikami

Things at the
Morikami Bonsai
exhibit are quiet.
Of course if bonsai growing made
noise, you would hear the exhibit
ten miles away. Things are growing like crazy. Nothing like warm
rain and long days to make them
take off. Additionally, repotting is
the activity taking most of our time
these days.
With our new facilities, and a
jury rigged mist system,
we have been 0 for 15
repotting. All is going
well.
The BSF sign honoring
people who have done
the major lifting for BSF
has been revitalized.
Now it has two live honorees
on it, Dr. C. Eschenburg, and Tom
Zane. Both were honored at the
2003 BSF Convention Banquet.
Remarkable what they have done.
We will cover that in future interviews.
We now have two pieces of
equipment that should
turn everyone green. A
hydraulic lift table with a
very heavy duty turntable.
With this combination,
one old geezer can pick
up any bonsai we have,
move it, and adjust the table to the perfect level for
pruning the bonsaiand
19

put it back. Eat your hearts out.

Our inventory of exhibit class
bonsai is growing, and we continue to look for contributions. We
have room for one or two loaners,
but we dont want to get overloaded with them.
Shortly, we should have the last
five newly donated bonsai stands
erected. The contractor will begin
working on another project for the
museum. When he does he will
do the rock bonsai stands.
We are planning
another bonsai
retreat, probably
before the end of
the year. Next
month

we
will
provide more information.
Likewise, we will tell you more
about the outstanding achievements of these two men in
the next issue.
Stop by, be our guest
expert. Provide us with
your opinion, critique the
bonsai.
Or, we can enlist you,
we always have weeds to
pull, branches to prune,
trees to repot.
It is your exhibit.

THE 2004 CONVENTION

An Introduction, Part 1
Collecting Workshop Material

The Hornbeam also grows through
out Florida. This workshop
should be priority for
everyone.

Mike Cartrett has always wanted a

The Ti-Ti is a
fabulous tree for
Bonsai. It has very
small leaves and deep
grooves in the bark. It is an
evergreen and can be grown
throughout Florida. Jim Moody
has a very large one that he has
had for years down in Jupiter.
Ive had some for five years, and
Jim Van Landingham for almost
ten years. I dont know why it is
not more popular in the Bonsai
community, however, I bet after
this Convention they will be.
There are large and small leaf TiTi. The small leaf is common to
where we got these and the large
leaf is common in the Pan Handle
area.
The Hornbeams have great
muscling and spread at the base.
On all our previous trips, we never

Jim stayed
in the
van and
peeled the shrimp for supper. We
had shrimp and oysters that night.
There was no roughing it on this
trip.
We got back late on Thursday
evening and, as know, collecting
the trees was just the first phase.
We now had to pot the trees. We
put them in my pond until the
potting operation on Friday.
The next morning we started
potting. It was the coldest morning
of the year at 26 degrees, and
stayed below freezing until almost
noon. Jim had a hood over his
head and all the clothes he could
find. My wife said he looked like
an Eskimo. We did the potting in

the heaters on. But the pressure
cleaning and the chain saw
operation had to be done outside,
and that was made worse by the
freezing temperature.
We got 23 Hornbeams and two
Ti-Ti potted that day, finished the
rest of the Ti-Ti during the next
two days. Of course, my wife
helped by holding the trees while
I operated the chain saw. She
even assisted in mixing the soil.
We used nine bags of the #3 mix,
four bags of Turface and four
bags of pine bark. (That is a lot of
mixing).

We also collected Bald Cypress

on three Saturdays prior to this
trip. Dr. Reggie Perdue got
permission for us to collect the
Cypress in a private area in
Holopaw. This area had thousands
of Bald Cypress. This should also
be another great workshop.

doing, watch for new postings on
our club web site. Use the link
