Pastoral Corner
Greetings!
In the First Reading today, we hear Moses telling the cultural story of the Hebrew people as they escape from
the slavery of the Egyptians. But he is reminding them that this event was more than just an escape from the evil of
slavery. This was the hand of God guiding them into a relationship with His Presence. Great praise for God! The
Responsorial Psalm (91) requests that same God to be present as we face our challenges. And-- to add another
dimension to this idea-- Paul in the Second Reading tells us not to give in to the temptation of worrying---our faith
(our head) and our heart (feelings) know the Presence of Christ and He will walk with us. Great way to start Lent!
In each of the three Synoptic Gospels, after his baptism, Jesus is reported to have spent forty days in the
desert, fasting and praying. In Luke and in Matthew, the tempter presents three temptations to Jesus. He challenges
Jesus to use his own power to stop his hunger---- he offers Jesus all the kingdoms of the world if Jesus will just
worship him---- and he pushes Jesus to put God's promise of protection to the test. In each case, Jesus resists,
quoting Hebrew Scripture to outsmart the temptation. In our own lives we are often tempted through our
cravings/hungers---through our desire for importance/power---through our religious/ethical compromises.
Luke ends his report of Jesus' temptations by noting that the tempter departs--- for a time. The implication is
that he will return. Maybe he is referring to the temptation in the Garden at Gethsemane (use your power now)
when he once again whispers to Jesus to turn away from the task God asks of him.
Jesus' responses to the temptations of evil--- teaches us how we can respond in our own lives as we face
things/people who-- try or do--- derail us from our commitment to Gods Call: living our daily life in more Christian
ways. We know that God is always going to love usJesus tells us that. We know that God is always going to
forgive us---again, Jesus tells us that. The season of Lent (40 daysexcluding Sundays) gives us a time set-apart to
focus on how we can be more like Jesus in our daily living: FAST from gossip this week, GIVE an extra hour to a
friend this week, or PRAY this week for someone specific that you dont like.
We can take control of our temptations---we can walk away from them or turn them into a Grace-filled
opportunity----all because God walks with us.
Deo Gratias,
