The purpose of this assignment is to help you reflect upon, analyze, and improve your own writing. Revision can be a creative and inspiring process that prompts you to take your work in directions you had not previously thought of. Revision is an essential step in any writing project and one that I hope you will continue beyond this class. This unit will give you some revision strategies that you can apply to other classes and projects. Task: The revision process is twofold. First, we will focus on global revision (a large-scale focus on issues such as content, organization, and style). We will then move on to surface revision, or editing for sentence-level issues. We will do some revision activities in class, but you are also expected to revise outside of class. Your grade for this project will not be determined by the quality of your final paper, but by how much you revisehow much better your new paper is than the first copy you turned in. This means that if you revise an A paper by just fixing grammatical errors, you will probably not be happy with your grade for this project (though you can still substantially revise an A paper for a good grade). However, if you substantially revise a D paper, you will likely receive a good grade. Process: 1. First, you will choose a project (either your literacy narrative or your ad analysis) that you would like to revise. Write me a one-page (double spaced) revision plan explaining why you chose this project to revise and what you think your top 3 priorities in revision should be (pro tip: grammar is not one of them). Due Wednesday 12/2 via BB at 11:59 pm. 2. We will be doing revision activities in class. These activities will depend on what issues we as a class deem to be most crucial in our revision processes. I will post each class PowerPoint to Blackboard later that day. Your homework assignments for this unit will be to apply that days changes to your entire draft and to write me one paragraph about how these changes made your paper better. As always, I will check these at the beginning of class. 3. Before you begin to make changes to your draft, make sure you turn on the track changes feature in Microsoft Word. This is under the Review tab. I will show you how to do this in class. The final draft you turn in will show these changes. 4. You will be required to bring a clean, unmarked copy of your current draft with you to class every day (either on your computer or hard copy). Yes, this requires you to print a new paper for every class meeting (if you do not bring your computer). 5. You will write a cover letter about your revision process and upload it as a separate document (due with final draft, details to come). Final Draft (with markup), Cover Letter, and Reflection Due: Friday, Dec. 18 by 10:30 am via BB (late work policy still applies, but I will NOT accept work after Wednesday, Dec. 23)
All submissions will be processed through SafeAssign anti-plagiarism software.
