Prerequisite(s):
Textbook(s) and/or other required material:
Control Systems Engineering by Norman S. Nise, Fifth Edition, John Wiley & Sons, 2008
Course objectives. By the end of this course, the student should be able to (use
demonstrative verbs):
Apply principles of control theory to model physical systems; Analyze first and second order
systems in the time domain; Characterize systems in terms of their properties; Design and
analyze systems in the frequency domain.
Topics covered:
A total of 41 lectures (in parentheses): Introduction to control and modeling: block diagrams,
signal flow graphs, Mason's gain formula(4);Models of physical systems: electrical and
electromechanical systems(2);State variable models: simulation diagrams, transfer
functions(3);Time response: first- and second-order systems, time response
specifications(4);Frequency response: higher-order systems(3);System characteristics: closedloop, stability, disturbance rejection, steady-state accuracy, transient response(6);Stability
analysis and design: Routh-Hurwitz criterion, root-locus techniques and design(8);Frequencyresponse analysis: frequency response, Bode diagram, Nyquist criterion, relative stability (gain
and phase margins)(5);Frequency-response design: Gain, phase-lag, phase-lead, and PID
compensation(6).
Class/laboratory schedule (sessions per week and duration of each session):
Three 50-minutes lectures per week.
