Suspects Captured in
Murder of Engaged Couple
The alleged killers of
a recently engaged Jersey
City, N.J. couple have been
apprehended, according to
The Associated Press.
Darmelia Lawrence
and Latonia Bellamy were
arrested April 9 in connection
with the college sweethearts’
murder. The two women, who
are both 19, were arrested on
charges of armed robbery and
murder.
A third suspect, Shiquan
Bellamy, and his cousin have
been in custody since April 6
after Bellamy was questioned
about the murders and drugs
were found on his person.
Bellamy was later charged
with the crimes.
Nia Haqq, 25, and
Michael Muchioki, 27, were
shot execution-style only
hours after their wedding
engagement party. According
to the report, the couple was
parking their new SUV when
three unidentified persons
– a man and two women –
surrounded the couple and
shot them both in the head.
Seattle Police Cleared
in Stun Gun Attack on
Pregnant Woman
According to The
Associated Press, three
Seattle police officers have
been cleared in a 2004
incident involving use of
a stun gun on a pregnant
African-American woman.
A federal appeals court
ruled April 9 that the officers,
Steven Daman, Juan Ornelas
and Donald Jones, had the
right to use the stun gun on
Malaika Brooks after she
refused to sign a speeding
ticket.
The report said Brooks
was driving her son to
Seattle’s African American
Academy when she was
pulled over for doing 32
miles per hour in a school
zone. She said the car in
front of her was speeding
and refused to sign the ticket.
Instead of issuing the ticket,
the officers decided to arrest
Brooks. When she refused
to exit her car, Brooks was
tasered three times – once in
the thigh, shoulder and neck.
Officers then dragged the
pregnant woman out of her
vehicle and placed her face-
down on the street.
Brooks gave birth to a
healthy baby boy two months
after the incident, but still has
scarring from being stunned.
She sued the officers for
violating her constitutional
rights, and at the time, U.S.
District Judge Richard Jones
said Brooks’ rights were
clearly violated.
But in a 2-1 ruling April 9,

and Diarmuid F. O’Scannlain
said officers were justified
because Brooks resisted
arrest. They will face no
charges or further disciplinary
action relating to the case.

Rally in Wake of Child’s

a rally organized to promote
discussion about violence

– founder of a group that
helps youth stay out of
trouble – urged men to
march. Muhammad is also
the founder of Peacekeepers,
a similar organization
targeting at-risk children, that
Simmons said has made some
progress in his hometown,
Queens, N.Y.
“We sit back sometimes
and allow just a few bad eggs
in our community to scare
us off our own corners,”
Simmons said, according
to the AP. “I stood on (the)
corner. I sold drugs. But I
went back and saw what it
felt like when we launched
our Queens Peacekeepers
movement.”
The city’s mayor said
the rally and march were
beneficial to the community
and hoped other men would
participate. “I think it’s a
good beginning,” Palmer said
while walking with Simmons
and other community
members. “The proof will
be if we can get more men
together in this and other
sustaining activities.”
Black Male College
Enrollment Slumps
College enrollment among
African-American males lags
behind that of Black women,
and graduation rates for

to the “Annual Status Report
on Minorities in Higher
Education,” a study released
by the American Council on
Education.
Similar studies released
last year suggest that as Black
males drop out of college,
some campuses are left with
nearly twice as many Black
females as Black males.
According to the
organization, two decades
ago, 30 percent of Black
male high school graduates
enrolled in college, compared
to 28 percent of Black
females. Recent studies found
that the percentage of Black
male high school graduates
going to college has increased
to 37 percent while the
number of Black female high
school graduates has grown
to 42 percent.
However, just 35 percent
of Black males enrolled in
college graduate within six

of White males and 46
percent of Hispanic men who
entered college the same year.

Notre Dame Names First
Black Valedictorian
In its 161-year history, an
African-American student
has never claimed the coveted
valedictorian title at the
University of Notre Dame
in Indiana. However, Katie
Washington, a biological
sciences major from Gary,
Ind., has made history at
the school and was recently
named the 2010 University
of Notre Dame valedictorian,
according to the school’s
Web site. She will present the
valedictory address during
commencement exercises in
May.
Washington has
maintained a 4.0 grade point
average and has a minor in
Catholic social teaching. She
has researched lung cancer,
genetics and co-authored a
research paper with a school
professor.
Washington also directs
the Voices of Faith Gospel
Choir at Notre Dame, serves
as a mentor for the Sister-
to-Sister program at a local
high school and is the student
coordinator of the “Lives in
the Balance: Youth Violence
and Society Seminar.”
After graduation,
Washington plans to attend
Johns Hopkins University
in Baltimore and pursue a
joint master’s and doctoral
program in medicine.

Budget Cuts Upset Union Groups

Mayor Adrian Fenty’s 2011 budget proposal that cuts
back services and employees that provide member assistance
within the city’s labor unions has met the consternation of their
members – most of whom are highly upset that they will be
left with essentially no place to turn for help with grievances.
Fenty’s plans call for the merger of the Office of Employee
Appeals with the Public Employee Relations Board (PERB).
The latter serves as a conduit for local government workers to
air complaints or challenge unfair punishment or dismissals.
The mayor is also reportedly proposing the elimination of 15 of
the combined 17 staff positions at the two agencies.
According to Josh Williams, spokesman for the
160,000-member Metropolitan Washington Council which
represents all unions falling under the auspices of the District
area AFL-CIO, most of the employees impacted by the
proposed merger and cuts are people of color.
“We’re appalled at the attempt to wipe out an institution that
is supposed to protect workers,” Williams said.
For the past three-and-a-half years, Williams said, vacancies
have appeared on PERB, yet the mayor has consistently refused
to fill them.
“It’s like us winning a case, having it appealed – which the
mayor has the right to do – but there’s no forum for which [to
confront an appeal] because there’s no one on the board to hear
the case,” Williams explained.

He said the situation is particularly upsetting because it
hasn’t been that well publicized.
“Especially for those of us who know what’s going on,”
Williams said. “We have not weighed in yet with the vigor that we
plan to, but we will be testifying and trying to get the word out [as]
people need to know about the injustice of an action like this.”
PERB is normally made up of five members, including one
employee representative and a management presence. As it is
now, just two people remain on board.
Roger Newell, president of the International Brotherhood
of Teamsters Union, said because of Fenty’s own inaction,
employee appeals have been long held up, as PERB has had no
avenue by which to move forward on cases.
“And these are city government employees who are filing
actions because they have been put in dangerous working
conditions [or] felt they’ve been discriminated against in terms
of motions,” Newell said. “[Fenty] sat for months and months
on nominees and when he did put forth folks, they were clearly
people who were not qualified to adjudicate the grievances that
had been put forth to PERB.”
Asked about the number of cases on file with PERB, Newell
said that while he’d have to check with local unions, he could
confirm that the District’s public schools employees who have
been fighting unfair terminations are among them.
Meanwhile, reports state that there’s currently a backlog
of 600 cases – all of which could face transfer to the Office of
Administrative Hearings for resolution.
“I think that the mayor’s proposal of merging the board
does not get to the fundamental issue that you need to have a
fully functioning PERB to handle the back log of cases that
exist,” Newell said. “These are workers, who in many cases,
are the bread winners for working families here in D.C., and
their whole future is being held in limbo because the mayor
won’t seriously accept his responsibilities to nominate qualified
individuals to PERB.”
Although At-large Councilman Kwame Brown said the
merger is being done to help close a gap in the proposed
budget, he said there had also been a lot of energy focused on it
and that a lot of the Council members have expressed concern.
“The members that I have spoken with are a little bit
shocked that it happened and they’re trying to figure out the
rationale,” Brown said. “So clearly, there will be a budget
hearing on it.”
A request for comment from Fenty was not returned by
AFRO press time. But according to a statement made earlier by
mayoral spokeswoman Mafara Hobson in the Washington Post,
the proposed spending plan will position the city to maximize
efficiency by streamlining agency operations, controlling
spending and eliminating vacant and redundant positions.

After more than two years of on-
again-off-again negotiations, District of
Columbia Public Schools Chancellor
Michelle Rhee and the Washington
Teachers Union have finally agreed on a
new contract.
The tentative agreement was reached
earlier this month following a raucous
period of talks that went back and
forth until both sides formed a pact,
that among other benefits gives Rhee
the pull she needs to rid the system of
ineffective teachers and give the city’s
4,000 educators salary increases that
would add up to more than 20 percent
over a five-year period. The new deal
– which comes amid the upcoming
mayoral race – will potentially award
new teachers salaries in excess of
$70,000 compared to the current
$45,000 benchmark and pave the way
for veteran instructors to earn as much
as $146,000 compared to the current
ceiling salary of $87,000.
Much of the funding reportedly will
be gleaned from private entities, such
as the Wal-Mart-related Walton Family
Foundation, that have collectively
vowed to donate more than $50 million.
WTU President George Parker said
during an April 7 press conference that
was attended by Rhee and American
Federation of Teachers President
Randi Weingarten, that the agreement
provides teachers with the supports they
need to facilitate quality teaching and
learning.
“We worked through our differences
to come up with a plan for education
that best serves the needs of D.C.’s
schoolchildren,” Parker said. “We never
veered from the principle that we must
raise academic and teaching standards
while also treating teachers fairly and
giving them the tools and conditions they
need to be effective in the classroom.” He
added that the three factions had come
together to negotiate key professional
issues that will help teachers provide their
students with the “excellent education”
they deserve “which is what teachers,
parents and the community rightfully
demand and respect.”
The contract has been forwarded
to the District’s chief financial officer
for fiscal certification. Upon approval,
it will go to WTU members, who will
have two weeks to vote on ratification.
Following ratification, the contract
then heads to the Council City for final
approval.
Mayor Adrian Fenty, who joined
forces in 2007 with Rhee to take over
the troubled school system, has often
being criticized for his lack of comment
regarding the hotbed of DCPS issues.
Among them has been the chancellor’s
controversial reduction in force mandate
under which more than 200 teachers lost
their jobs last fall.

residents are missing out on a program that
allows thousands of workers in the area

Va. Governor Calls Black

Newspaper to Apologize for
Confederate ‘Mistake’
“I apologize”: This call came at about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday [April 7] – right at the Free
Press deadline.
The caller: Gov. Bob McDonnell. After exchanging pleasantries, the governor immediately
told the editor/publisher the reason for his call.
Unsurprisingly, his urgent communication on this occasion was about his Confederate
History Month Proclamation – the despicable decree that he issued honoring false heroes who
fought to preserve the cruel system of slavery and to annihilate the United States of America
and its promise of freedom.
We listened patiently. The governor immediately acknowledged that he had made a mistake
and had amended his proclamation – a proclamation that ignored the atrocities of slavery in an
ongoing attempt to sanitize the brutalization and degradation inflicted on Black people

Reform Legislation Can Changes Lives
The recent passage of the landmark health care reform
legislation in March 2010 calls for near-universal health
insurance coverage for U.S. citizens, making it one of the
greatest achievements that our American government has
accomplished in many years. Particularly, this legislation is
important because it has the potential to begin turning the tide
of troubling trends in the health of African Americans through
increased access to preventive care services.
 A brief look at reports from the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention and other organizations devoted to
providing condition-specific information, such as the American
Cancer Society and the American Diabetes Association,
reveals that, in comparison to others in the U.S., African
Americans disproportionately bear the burden of chronic
illnesses (e.g., hypertension, diabetes, and various cancers)
and that African Americans perish at a greater rate from
complications related to these illnesses. The complex reasons
behind these disparities involve a combination of biological,
psychological, societal, and political factors that require
continued study, heightened awareness, and informed action.
Even so, many people have experienced advantages from
preventive medical services such as screenings for prostate,
breast and colon cancers, blood pressure monitoring, prenatal
care, nutrition counseling and regular check-ups, and serve as
examples of how such proactive medical care can positively
impact immediate and long term health outcomes.
As the law of the land, health care reform has opened
the way for more African Americans to access and benefit
from these and other preventive services that can aid in
early detection of risk factors for many conditions that
threaten quality of life and longevity. In addition to lifestyle
adjustments that increase physical activity, reduce stress, and
increase the intake of healthful foods, the provisions outlined
in the health care reform law can ultimately translate into great
gains in the health of African Americans at all ages and stages
of life.

Virginia is Not For Lovers
February is recognized as Black History Month. March
is known as Women’s History Month. Now, April is being
honored in Virginia as Confederate history month. Virginia’s
slogan used to be “Virginia is for lovers.” Now, Virginia
apparently prefers to be known for haters. Virginia Republican
Gov. Robert McDonnell proclaimed April as the month for an
understanding of the sacrifices of Confederate leaders, soldiers
and citizens during the civil war. As an African American,
isn’t this Confederate recognition like Germany recognizing
the sacrifices of the Nazis leadership during World War II?
Wouldn’t everyone think it was offensive to Jews?
So why was April selected? April 17, 1861, is the day
Virginia seceded from the Union. Richmond later became
the capitol of the Confederacy. Mississippi and Georgia have
already acknowledged Confederate history month. Yet, two
wrongs don’t make it right.
Originally, Virginia’s proclamation failed to even make
mention of slavery. At first, Gov. McDonnell said he didn’t
think it was significant. That’s like saying the Holocaust did
not exist or was not significant. Worse yet, it’s ignorant on
the part of Gov. McDonnell. Gov. McDonnell later amended
the proclamation to include mention of slavery as an evil
and inhumane part of history. Why did anyone have to let
McDonnell know about mentioning slavery? The whole idea
is disrespectful to the slaves and their descendants whose lives
were beaten, stolen and lost in slavery, whose families were
broken up and sold and whose family members were lynched
in Virginia.
The Confederacy was a rebellion that tried unsuccessfully
to overthrow the U.S. government to save the institution
of slavery. If some domestic extremist militia group today
attempts an armed rebellion to overthrow our government to
advance their cause, will a future governor set aside a month to
honor them? I hope the answer is no.
In Black History Month and Women’s History Month,
we celebrate where we’ve come from. Virginia’s confederate
history month celebrates the way we were. The way we were
involved slavery, a cruel and inhumane treatment of Black
people. There is inherent racism in this way of thinking. That’s
the real problem I have with Confederate history month. So,
no Gov. McConnell, I don’t agree with the confederate party
celebration.
Gov. McDonnell says the reason behind the thinking
was to encourage tourism. There are other ways for Virginia
to encourage tourism without offending over 20 percent of
its population. When I was growing up, my family visited
Gettysburg, Pa., a major battleground of the civil war.
President Lincoln delivered the famous Gettysburg address
there. At Gettysburg, President Lincoln declared we were a
nation conceived in liberty and that all men are created equal.
If Virginia wants to encourage tourism with its past history,
there are positive non-offensive ways to do it.
I don’t advocate us ever forgetting about the civil war and
slavery. As an African-American history major, I do not want
us to ever forget the evil of slavery. I just don’t see the reason
to celebrate the confederacy anymore than I see a reason to
celebrate the Nazi regime.
Virginia is definitely not for lovers unless you are a
confederate lover.

What Health Care Reform Means for You
Passage of health care
reform is a very big deal. It’s
the first time in history that
we have committed to ending
the abuses of the insurance
industry and covering every
single American.
I voted for health care
reform because I listened
to Marylanders as they told
me their stories. People told
me about the situation of
their lives at roundtables
and hearings, at diners and

more wrote to me and called.
They shared with me their fear of one big health care incident
leading them into bankruptcy.
I heard from people like Karen from Kensington, whose
father had to quit his job because he suffered from Crohn’s
disease. When he was two pennies short on his insurance
payment, he lost his coverage. During the six months it took to
reinstate his insurance, his health deteriorated. He died a year
after his insurance was cancelled. He was just 59 years old

when he passed away.
I thought of people like Karen and her father when I was
fighting to pass this bill.
This legislation provides long-term health security for
all Americans. It saves and strengthens Medicare, extending
its life by nearly a decade. It also helps seniors afford their
prescription drugs. It establishes a small business health care
tax credit to help small businesses cover their workers. It
allows young people to stay on their parents’ policies until age
26. And it cuts the hassle factor, allowing doctors to spend time

with patients instead of paperwork.
This bill also ends the punitive practices of insurance
companies by making sure that no American will ever be
denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition.
This is a very big deal for women. I am particularly proud of
the role that I have played in changing the way that insurance
companies treat women. For far too long, they have treated
simply being a woman as a pre-existing condition. They used
every trick in the book to deny women coverage. In seven
states and the District of Columbia, being a victim of domestic
violence was considered a pre-existing condition. Women were
denied coverage because a medically-mandated C-section was
considered a pre-existing condition.
That’s why when they tried to take our mammograms away,
I said, “No!” and introduced an amendment that guarantees
women who enroll in new health care plans coverage of
preventive care such as mammograms, pap tests and heart
disease screenings with no
co-pays or deductibles.
These changes are
a monumental step in
improving the lives and
health of people across the
state of Maryland and across
the United States. This bill is a leap into the future, and it is a
leap we can take with confidence. My job as a U.S. senator is to
provide opportunity for the American people, and health care is
one of the greatest opportunities we can provide.

Time for Action on Summer Jobs for Youth

members of the civil rights
community, the White
House has endorsed a key
provision of the National
Urban League’s six-point
Plan for Putting Americans
Back to Work - summer jobs
for chronically unemployed
urban youth. In a recent
Black teenagers are unemployed – a recipe for disaster for the
young people, their families and our economy. We know that
summer jobs not only put needed money into the budgets of
struggling families, but also provide valuable work experience
that can start young people on the path to productive adulthood,
and help jump-start local economies. Summer jobs also take
idle kids off the hot summer streets where they are more likely
to get into trouble.
In recent months, the National Urban League has waged a

is called for. In fact, Congresswoman Barbara Lee recently
teamed up with California Congressman George Miller to
structure a $100 billion jobs bill, The Local Jobs for America

National Urban League’s six-point plan, including direct job
creation, job training, and targeted help for communities most
in need.

cover story of this year’s “State of Black America Report.”
A summer jobs bill is sorely needed, but as Congresswoman
Barbara Lee has said, it would merely be a down-payment on
which tracks many of the
National Urban League’s
recommendations.
I am pleased that the White House and the Congress are
finally responding to the recommendations of the National
Urban League, the CBC and others. We must increase efforts
to create jobs for the chronically unemployed, especially in
communities of color. But we don’t have months to debate this
issue. Summer is fast approaching. Our young people need jobs
now.

Post Racial? Bah Humbug!

Perhaps it was unfair to
expect that the election of
Barack Obama would “bend
the curve” on hundreds of
years of racial attitudes and
the politics that developed
Joseph C. Phillips around those attitudes. Then
again, for a man that entered
office with a promise to calm the seas and heal the sick doing
“post racial” should have been a piece of cake. Moreover,
with all the talk of “hope and change” it was not outrageous
to imagine that there might be some positive change in the
tone surrounding discussions of race. Certainly it was not
unreasonable to imagine that at the very least this president-
who was going to win back the worlds respect – would not
stoke the fires of racial enmity here at home. Well, as my
mother used to say: “If wishes were horses, beggars would
ride.” Instead of bringing Americans together, this president is
proving to be the most divisive and racially polarizing president
in recent memory. And France still isn’t all that crazy about us.
The press of course has been filled with reports of the
racism rampant on the political right. There is no doubt in my
mind that there are American citizens that dislike President
Obama because he is Black, who are threatened with the
increase in the population of “brown” people and resent the
idea of a Black man with as much smarts, power and charisma
as Barack Obama. I am also absolutely certain that there are
Americans that continue to believe O.J. Simpson did not
murder Nicole, believe men from space have landed and
infiltrated our citizen ranks or believe the recent healthcare bill
passed by congressional democrats and signed by the president
will actually reduce the deficit.
Particular invective has been directed at members of the
various tea parties, who are depicted as violent racists come
together to protest a brother with power and prone to chant
the N-word at members of the Congressional Black Caucus.
Of course this yarn is spun with an absolute disregard for the
truth and absolutely no evidence. The tea parties were formed
in response to profligate spending by a White Republican
president. And in this day and age – with every cell phone
equipped with a video camera – it is difficult to imagine that
not one frame has materialized showing dozens of tea partiers
chanting the N-word and spitting on Black congressmen as has
been reported over and over again. The charges, however, fit
so neatly with the new lefts narrative that facts just get in the
way. As does any notion that playing the race card every time

someone disagrees with this president hinders political debate
and stirs the pot of racial animus.
Now comes news that the Obama Justice Department has
filed an amicus brief supporting a return to the use of racial
preferences at the University of Texas at Austin.
Following the 1996 decision in Hopwood v. Texas the
University of Texas was forced to find race-neutral means to
increase the enrollment of minority students on its campus.
The school began granting automatic admissions for students
graduating in the top 10 percent of their high school senior
class.
In 2003 the Supreme Court in Grutter v. Bollinger held that
some use of race is permissible only if race neutral methods
fail and then they must be narrowly tailored. The University of
Texas chose to hold onto the top 10 percent program and return
to the use of race preferences for students falling outside that
percentage.
In 2008 Abigail Fisher, the lead plaintiff in Fisher v.
University of Texas, graduated in the top 12 percent of her high
school class and was denied admission to the university. Her
lawyers argue that the race-neutral 10 percent plan has been
successful and therefore any use of race preferences oversteps
the dictates prescribed by the Supreme Court and is unlawful.
What is of particular interest is that the administration has
gone beyond simply filing a brief in support of existing law.
The president has extended the argument beyond what The
University of Texas applies and the Supreme Court envisioned
in Grutter and endorses the use of racial preferences in all
“educational institutions” – K-12, undergraduate, and graduate.
As Roger Clegg, president and general counsel at the Center for
Equal Opportunity points out, “The Supreme Court has never
found there to be a compelling interest in the former instance
– nor, for example, in post-doctorates for chemistry – and it
is aggressive and wrong to
argue that, because the Court
found there to be compelling
educational benefits in
diversity at the University
of Michigan law school,
therefore any educational institution can make that claim.”
In the battle against discrimination Obama seeks to take us
backward. This administration does not envision an America
moving away from preferences, but a nation of increased
preferences based on race. Just as unfounded cries of racism
lead to an increase in racial enmity, racial preferences create
racial hostility.
It was anticipated by many of us that a Black man sitting
in the oval office would fundamentally change the racial
discussion in America. This nation would finally and at long
last leave the chains of race on the ground and thus unburdened
soar to the heights promised at our founding. This new post
racial America would be the defining contribution to the
American narrative by the first post racial president, Barack
Obama. Or so we hoped.

such as budgeting and finance, interviewing skills, college life,
career choices and health awareness.
More than 400 family members, friends and guests
attended the debutantes’ formal presentation. The crowd
witnessed the crowning of Lauren Simmons as Miss Cotillion,
Camille Hayslett as first attendant and Courtney Martin as
second attendant. Briana Richardson garnered the title of
Miss Congeniality through the votes of her fellow debutantes.
The evening highlights included the welcome by former
Zeta Chi Omega debutante Angela Russell and the charge by
Ade’Leaka Gore, the former second vice president of Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority. The evening showcased the parents’ Escorts Walter Batts II, Brian Alexander Bracey, Jordan Bundy, Britton Dean, Joseph
waltz and the debutantes’ grand promenade and minuet with Pierre-Miller Dillon, Alexander William Edwards, David Nathan Jordan, Darius Ari Lewis,

Enterprise Community Partners’ St. Martin’s development
in Northeast Washington D.C.’s Eckington neighborhood
is one of the company’s several low-income housing

Partners Faith-Based
Development Initiative (ECP)
is planning to help local
houses of worship and other
faith-based groups bring 629
affordable housing units to
blighted areas over the next

With 14 units presently
open within the metro area
and 214 units currently
under construction, ECP is
working diligently to ensure
its goal is completed. The
company recently hosted
its fourth annual workshop
series on April 8, a two-
part series that provided
groups with an overview of
the public money available
for financing development
projects and tutorials on asset
management.
With offices situated
around the country, ECP’s
efforts to help the District
area have been the most
concentrated. Over the last
few years, the company has
provided more than $125
million in capital to support
affordable housing efforts in
the D.C. area alone.
“Our goal is to get new
units of housing developed
that serve low- and moderate-
income people in the D.C.
metro area,” said Vice
President David Bowers.
“Our approach to doing that
is to connect with houses
of worship who own land
that’s undeveloped or
underdeveloped and connect
them with intellectual and
financial capital, [in other
words] money and expertise.”
Serving as a liaison
between aspiring developers
and capital resources has
placed ECP in a prestigious
light among local faith-
based groups. More than 160
area groups have attended
the company’s 22 training
sessions and 10 networking
luncheons over the past
four years, a number that
will likely grow when the
company hosts another
training session on May 6.

Duke Ellington’s
Compositions Come to Life in
Musical Update

Big band music and the
excitement of the roaring
‘20s are revived in the
Arena Stage production
of Duke Ellington’s
Sophisticated Ladies, a
musical revue based on the
compositions of the late jazz
legend.
“I’m very grateful and
also honored to tell the story
of Duke,” said Leo Manzari,
a 15-year-old dancer who
performs in the show. It’s
the fact that we’re bringing
pieces of history to present-
day people who may not
know about him. You’re
not just reading about him
in books, but it’s actually a
live performance that you
can actually get into. You
can appreciate it for what it
is and you can live in that
moment.”
Manzari and his 17-year-
old brother John, who also
appears in the production,
both began performing at an
early age. They have trained
and danced throughout the
District, sharing the stage
with dancer and actress

John spoke about
how he believes the play
embodies the best aspects
of Ellington’s life and his
musical prowess.
“I think the play lives
up very well to Ellington’s
legacy. I feel like the
original play was just a
revue, so it was a lot of
songs just put together,
but now we’ve taken the
original layout of the
songs—which live up to his
legacy alone—but we’ve
also told the story of his
life. It shows how he grew
from D.C. to America, to
the world.”

how Ellington, who began
his musical career at just
17, expanded his local
shows in the District to
later tour across the nation.
Throughout his extensive
run, he was responsible
for a string of well-known
compositions including
“In a Sentimental Mood,”
“Mood Indigo” and “It
Don’t Mean a Thing (If it
Ain’t Got That Swing).”
Ellington can also be
credited as one of the first
composers to fuse jazz and
classical music. His piece,
Black, Brown and Beige,
which chronicled the history
of African Americans, is
an example of the fusion
between the two different
forms of music. Ellington
and his band continued to
perform across the U.S.
until his death in 1974.
“This piece is a joyous
celebration of Duke
Ellington and D.C.,”
Randolph-Wright said
in a press release. “This
is where he grew up and
where his career began.
We’re going to tell the story
of his musical journey both
visually and through song
and dance. We want to
celebrate him not only as
a true American composer,
but as one of the greatest in
the world.”
The first Broadway
production of Sophisticated
Ladies debuted in 1981
and was the winner of two
Tony Awards. Leo feels
this production, which
conveniently premiers
during National Jazz
Appreciation Month, will
thrive in its own right.

whether the production will
have a similar [outcome],
but I really do believe
the show will be very
successful.”

fashion show last weekend that benefited the Washington Humane Society.
After appearing on the new “Big Tigger Morning Show,” host Big Tigger and rap star
Ludacris were spotted grabbing lunch at the iconic Ben’s Chili Bowl last week. Ludacris was
in town filming a public service announcement, encouraging people to fill out the census form.
Big Tigger was also spotted at fellow radio personality Anji Corley’s birthday bash held at
Tuscana West earlier that weekend.
Last week, Capitol File celebrated their April cover girl, Anna Kournikova, with an

Architect
George Worthy was born July 23,
1937, in Washington, D.C. In his
informative years, he learned that
in order to accomplish greatness
he would be required to work
hard, be committed to his
goals and persevere without
exception.
When he was a young
boy, Alberta Addison took
him in as part of her family.
Her children, Alden and Jean,
became his new brother and
sister and Shirley became his
cousin. George was blessed to be
received by a family who played
an integral role in shaping the man

students in Baltimore. His
professional awards included

the master builder marketer award by Saco

prepared to be slapped with several labels

reveals that justice was served in Pittsburgh.

committed several idiotic college freshmen-
like mistakes during his tenure in “Steel

habitual troublemaker. His trade to the New
York Jets for a fifth round pick wasn’t a
racist reaction or a means of scapegoating
the former Super Bowl MVP, but instead
served as a notice that you can’t smoke
weed, physically assault women and journey
in and out of courtrooms and expect to
continue a career with the Steelers.
For all of Roethlisberger’s drawbacks,
he’s never broken the law or been arrested as
a member of the Steelers, and his two cases
of sexual allegations involved inconsistent
stories from his accusers. While Holmes
has dodged jail time in place of slaps on the
wrist, his March Twitter postings telling a
fan to “kill urself” and it’s “time to wake
n bake,” in the wake of allegations that on
March 7 he assaulted a woman with a glass
at a Florida nightclub, punched his ticket out
of town.
For those unaware, the term “wake n
bake,” as defined by UrbanDictionary.com,
means to get out of bed in the morning and
smoke pot. While catchy, posting that on
your public Twitter page goes two rights and
a left beyond stupid. How do you get your
name placed in the news over assaulting a
woman (for the second time in his career; he
assaulted his child’s mother in 2006) then
less than a week later post you’re about to
“wake n bake” on your Twitter page? After
being suspended for a game in 2008 when
a traffic stop turned up three marijuana
joints in his truck, you would think Holmes
would’ve been straying away from his
Cheech & Chong impersonations but, alas,
common sense isn’t common in everyone.
The Steelers are a patient franchise, but
drug use is something they don’t deal with
for long. Talented tight end Eric Greene’s
run with the team was highlighted by his
spectacular play and marred by a cocaine
habit that forced the team to release him
after the 1994 season. Running back Byron
“Bam” Morris was released in 1996 after
a police stop turned up 4 kilograms of
marijuana and 1 gram of cocaine. Holmes’
boot, then, continues along the line of
Pittsburgh’s “no drugs on your mind” rule.
As long as there’s money, there will
forever be sex, drugs and bad behavior
in professional sports. Only one of the
aforementioned is illegal and apparently only
two of the aforementioned are allowed in
Pittsburgh.

signed a $3.1 million tender with Washington
on April 12, removing himself from the free
agent market. But now that Campbell is
signed, the Redskins may be in the works for
a trade.
According to reports, Campbell was given
permission to seek a trade after pro-bowl
quarterback Donovan McNabb was acquired

at Howard’s campus in

in the Mid-Eastern Athletic

Interscholastic Athletic Association during the past four years
than the Bowie State Lady Bulldogs.
BSU has captured the CIAA Championship in each of the
last three seasons, and after destroying the Saint Augustine Lady
Falcons, 18-0, on April 12, it appears that the Lady Bulldogs are
ready to claim their title as four-time defending champs.
