There are 14 Harris County COWs going out very shortly as a result of two donations: Apache and COSI. Lisa
Felske, the science gal at the Harris County Department of Education, found the first schools and will locate
others as new donations come in. You both should meet with her to share your knowledge of the areas you serve
in case that will be helpful to her in finding schools for the next wave of COWs, and there will be many next
waves. Also you need to communicate with her and copy Doug Kleiner about arranging orientations. The sooner
the better for the first set of COWs. The list is attached. Call Lisa and confirm what communication has taken
place with the schools to notify them that they are about to receive this great gift.

Good news! 14 COWs are in route to Houston in time for the Aug 21 st orientation at HCDE. Since I was not part
of the meeting between the three of you, how are each of the schools receiving COWs being contacted and
invited to the event on the 21Sl? Are all of the schools on board with not only receiving the COW, but also
attending the orientation?
Now that Shell has stepped up to provide 10 COWs, there will be another 10 new COW users to interface with an
addition to the current 15 and invite to the same Aug 21 s1 event.
The one COW that is not indicated below is for Horace Mann in Goose Creek. I will provide that address to Team
Austin for immediate shipment.

I wanted to check to make sure that you all received your Science COWs and that you
were able to put them together successfully. Have you started using them? Are your
students enjoying the COW? Please let me know how things are going.
I also wanted to inform you about the next two training dates so that we can have 100%
participation:
November 1, 2006: Room 502 (on 5th floor of parking garage)
May 10, 2007: Room 502 (on 5th floor of parking garage)
These trainings are from 2:00-4:00 pm and they are a mandatory part of the grant.

We have decals for Apache COWs and need to put them on. We are waiting for decals for Shell and COCI and
will then place them on ourselves or ask the COW users to do that with instructions as to where on the COW.
bp COWs have been deployed in LA and are labeled with their own custom label. We will be conducting an
orientation in Austin for 7 more COW users in Sept when those COWs are deployed.

Teaching Pluto: Ignite! Releases Updated Pluto Content for Teachers

Austin, Texas·- September 18, 2006 .- Ignite!, an educational media company located in Austin, Texas,
has responded quickly to the recent scientific news of Pluto's changing status with an animated music
video. In an entertaining way, the video:
explains why astronomers redefined "planet"

explains what part of the new definition excluded Pluto
makes the broad point that scientific definitions and categories change as new understandings
are reached.
