Title : Measurement of environmental parameters using Wireless Sensor Networks.

Abstract : Measurement of environmental parameters is very important in an array of

government and supervising departments. Hospitals, for example need measurement of bacteria
level, humidity, temperature etc. to maintain a healthy environment. Apart from that wireless
sensor networks are also being used in flood and forest fire detection nowadays and also
measuring pressure on sea beds that can determine soil erosion levels.

Motivation :- After the floods that hit Kashmir in the year 2014, we worked in a Wireless Sensor
network lab sponsored by the government of Jammu and Kashmir to develop a mechanism of
water level/flood level detection which was carried out successfully. Thereafter, the model was
worked upon by us to also help make a wireless sensor mechanism to determine an appropriate
timing for forest fires to hit various parts of Himalayas etc. We used motes and Zigbee to achieve
this successfully. We had also proposed to use the same model for hospitals to determine the
levels of humidity, temperature, etc. that are necessary for bacteria cultivation. This is work in
progress and we plan to write a research paper on it.

Literature Review
We are using various research papers available on the IEEE site for this purpose. A lot of
research has been done on the subject and we ourselves have spent some time in a wireless
sensor network lab in Srinagar, Kashmir. We plan to use the materials provided to us by the
scientists there, our own experience and the assorted number of research papers on the subject on
Google scholar and the IEEE site.

Page 2|7

Aim(s)
1. To devise the sensors/motes independently or buy them.
2. To integrate the motes with the necessary software and use Zigbee for the purpose.
3. To experiment with various environments and measure various parameters required by us.
4. To compare the data and come to conclusions.

Objectives
1. We expect the wireless sensor network made to be properly integrated with our software and
we would prefer buying the motes if economic constraints permit so.
2. We also expect the various experiments we carry out to display an array of different values

which would determine our experiments and the project, a success overall.

Approach :We plan to preferably buy the wireless motes as manufacturing them is difficult and also constly.
When acquired, the motes shall be integrated to our computer softwares using Zigbee protocol.
We already have a little experience with NesC coding required to use Zigbee and the necessary
softwares required in the process. Thereafter we plan to conduct experiments including in areas
like SRM hospital, Techpark washrooms etc. to get a series of results that will determine whether
our experiment and project is a success or not.

Project Deliverables
1. A wireless sensor network capable of measuring various parameters in various environments.
2. A document of the parameters and the formulae used to determine if they show signs of
danger collectively. The Canadian approach might be used in case of forest fire
determination.
Potential contributions of the proposed project
1. Forest fire determination.
2. Water level determination in floods.
3. Bacteria level determination in hospitals etc.
4.
Conclusions
Very little has been done in case of wireless sensor networks determining the bacteria/disease
levels in various environments where health and hygiene are a must. For example : hospitals, old
age homes, baby rooms etc. Apart from that a lot of work has been done on forest fire detection
using wireless sensor networks but most of it was just proposed. We plan to use cryptographic
methods to reduce the errors- human or equipmental etc.
