LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

&Beyond Vamizi Island, situated
off the balmy shores of northern
Mozambique, now joins our trilogy
of private, you wish you were there
island escapes. It is the perfect
complement to a tailormade safari
on both our East and Southern
African circuits.

Claire Trickett
Here at &Beyond, we kicked the
New Year off at pace with the
exciting addition of a third island
to our expanding lodge portfolio.
The exquisite and ultra-luxurious

This exciting new addition of a third

marine habitat to our collection of
lodges allows us to augment our
current conservation efforts on
&Beyond Mnemba and Benguerra
Islands and to actively promote and
contribute wherever possible to the
conservation of the increasingly
fragile Indian Ocean. Check out
page six and picture yourself (and a
small group of friends/family) in one
of the individually-designed, and
completely unique, luxury villas.

And of course, just in time for

Valentines Day, we hope you
enjoy our featured recipes. Happy
Valentines Day!
Until next time

@clairetrickett

Id love to hear from you

ON THE COVER

TOUGHEST DIRECTOR OF THE MONTH

Psst did you hear the exciting

news? Weve added a third island to
our portfolio. Read all about it on
page 6.

This tongue-in-cheek column, usually dedicated to our rangers, showcases

the lighter side of guiding and those rare, not-so-macho, moments captured
on film. When we saw this endearing tough-guy photo of &Beyond Regional
Director Jason King riding sidecar, we couldnt resist crowning him our
Toughest Director of the Month. Move over Hells Angels, theres a new guy in
town!
If you would like to make a nomination, please send it to

ISLAND PARADISE
ISLAND PARADISE TO THE POWER OF THREE
In 2015, the power of three rung true as we proudly added a third continent to our portfolio with the official, and
highly-anticipated, launch of &Beyond South America. Not to be outdone by last years breaking news, 2016 started
with a bang and we are delighted to announce the inclusion of a third island oasis to our growing collection of luxury
properties.

PRIVATELY YOURS
Situated in the Quirimbas Archipelago off the tropical coast of northern Mozambique, the exquisite &Beyond Vamizi
Island is the perfect island escape, boasting just six individually-designed and unashamedly luxurious beach villas.
Scattered along the pristine, rugged coastline, each exclusive villa provides an intimate and very private setting for
up to 12 guests, making &Beyond Vamizi the ideal place for families, small groups or high profile guests in search of a
remote, indulgent holiday.
Each villa comes complete with a dedicated team of staff, which includes a personal chef, butler and housekeeper, as
well as the use of a private vehicle to visit one of the islands five secluded picnic sites or explore the lush mangrove
lagoons.

ISLAND PARADISE
CARE OF THE OCEAN

Set in an extensive marine conservation area, the warm waters surrounding &Beyond Vamizi Island boast some of the
most untouched coral reefs in the Indian Ocean, with over 180 species of colourful coral and more than 400 types of
reef fish. Its no wonder it is hailed as one of the worlds top diving sites.
The island is also renowned as a protected breeding site for endangered green turtles, allowing guests the once-in-alifetime opportunity to witness these remarkable creatures laying their eggs or the tiny hatchlings braving the long trek
to sea.
As we expand our island footprint, so too do we further solidify our ongoing commitment to marine conservation.
&Beyond Vamizi Island boasts an impressive decade-long dedication to conservation, making it the perfect
complement to our existing island lodge offering: &Beyond Mnemba Island in Zanzibar and &Beyond Benguerra Island
in Mozambiques Bazaruto Archipelago.
&Beyond already has a positive influence on more than 9 million acres of protected wildlife land in the areas we
operate. The addition of a third marine habitat to our collection of lodges means that marine conservation will now
receive the same focus as our land-based projects and we will actively promote and contribute wherever possible
to the conservation of the Indian Ocean, stretching from Zanzibar in the north right down to the southern tip of
Mozambique.

ISLAND PARADISE
EXPLORE OR DO NOTHING AT ALL

Blissfully remote and undeniably breathtaking, &Beyond Vamizi is the ideal base for adventure lovers, sun worshippers,
keen divers and friends/families looking to escape the modern world, yet still maintain the utmost in luxury and
pampering. Situated in northern reaches of Mozambique, it is the perfect complement to a safari on both our East and
Southern African safari circuits.
Adventure abounds, with snorkelling, scuba diving, whale watching, kayaking, nature walks, catch-and-release deep
sea fishing, dhow sunset cruises and community visits on offer or choose to simply relax and soak up the suns rays.
And so, last years mantra was two islands are better than one, with the newly-rebuilt &Beyond Benguerra Island
joining &Beyond Mnemba Island as one of &Beyonds two private island oases. With the inclusion of &Beyond Vamizi
Island, wed certainly say third times a charm.

GUEST DELIGHT
SPEAK MY LANGUAGE

A mere six weeks into a brand new year, February is full of possibility. With the dreaded month of New Years
resolutions, diets, detoxes and festive season debt officially behind us, February reminds us that there are still
11 months of the year with which to plan adventure, explore faraway places and learn new things.
Like it or not, February is also the month of love. American author Gary Chapman coined the now widely acclaimed
five love languages you may have heard of them. It is the premise that we all have one primary love language, or
one overriding way of expressing and accepting love emotionally. Everyone responds differently to different cues and
the art is learning what makes the other person tick and feel loved.
So whats your love language?
1. Words of affirmation: spoken words of praise and appreciation
2. Acts of service: simple, random actions that speak louder than words
3. Receiving gifts: neither expensive nor elaborate, small unexpected gifts are the thought that counts
4. Quality time: listening, conversing and giving undivided attention
5. Physical touch: showing affection, as simple as a hand on ones shoulder
With Valentines Day just around the corner, why not surprise your partner with an unforgettable adventure that
speaks directly to their love language? We asked our expert travel planners for some of their top travel experiences for
couples and heres what they had to say

words.

ACTS OF SERVICE
Dont tell your partner you love them; rather show them with a thoughtful act that truly pays it forward. Is
conservation close to their heart? Then why not whisk them away to Kenya and Tanzania for the safari of a lifetime
in the world-famous Serengeti/Mara ecosystem. Not only will they witness and learn about the incredible array of
year-round wildlife, but they can also partake in a community trip that makes a lasting difference to the people living
alongside these vast wildlife reserves.
Stay in a romantic, stilted treehouse suite at &Beyond Lake Manyara Tree Lodge and opt for an afternoon off the
game drive vehicle. Instead, visit the nearby Mayoka community and enjoy an energetic guided bicycle tour through
this quaint fishing village and interact with the Mangati tribe as they go about their daily tasks. Finish with a scenic
sundowner stop on the flamingo-dotted shores of Lake Manyara and know that you have made a meaningful
difference.

There is no gift more famous or more poetic than the magnificent Taj Mahal in India. The ultimate symbol
of everlasting devotion, it is one of the worlds most revered love stories of a grief-stricken emperor boldly
demonstrating his adoration for his late wife.
Surprise your loved one with the unexpected gift of a trip to India to witness the Taj Mahal the most famous gift
of eternal love in all its glory and splendour. And with Indias myriad marketplaces that sell everything from ornate
jewellery, technicolour trinkets and silky saris, to heaping mounds of fresh fruit and a kaleidoscopic whirl of aromatic
spices, there are countless opportunities to purchase small, out-of-the-blue gifts for each other along the way.

If physical touch charges and reignites your relationship, then we recommend the passionate and exciting land of

its sure to heat things up. Danced in a close embrace and fuelled by emotion and steady eye contact, the tango is
sensual, upbeat and invigorating.

The BATELEUR magazine launched its inaugural issue back in June

2012. What started out as a small internal publication aimed solely at inspiring
and motivating our staff with operational ideas, has quickly evolved into a
full-blown, global digital publication that is released every other month.
Also available as an interactive (and free) download for tablets on both the
iTunes and Google Play stores, the BATELEUR continues to evolve. Our goal
with each and every issue is quite simply to inspire our guests past, present

GUEST DELIGHT
BEST FROM THE GUEST
Our goal with each and every guest, quite simply, is to welcome them as friends, spoil them with unexpected
surprises, create lifelong memories and ensure that they leave feeling like one of the family.
Our guests really do say it best and we absolutely love hearing from them about their &Beyond experience. If you
would like to share your own &Beyond story, please send your comments to claire.trickett@andBeyond.com.
As a leader in business myself, I found the intensely heartfelt sense of
welcome and family that we experienced with all &Beyond staff members
truly remarkable. I have become what I call in marketing a brand zealot and
cant sell &Beyond hard enough when people ask me about my safari.
Both Sam and AK, our guides, were some of the most enjoyable people Ive
spent time with. Period. They were incredible and such an asset to your
company. We left them both with tears in our eyes.
Im also very thankful for the passion youve awakened in us as far as
conservation goes. We now are making changes in our own life to protect
the planet and will give frequently to preserve habitat and wildlife, while
encouraging friends to do the same, thanks to the experiences weve been
fortunate enough to enjoy.
It couldnt have been more magical and I think about the experience every
day. I really left my heart back there. I hope someday Im lucky enough to
live in Southern Africa, even for a year or two, so it doesnt all seem like a
beautiful dream.

Having returned from my trip to Botswana, I am afraid I have to raise a complaint. I am considering suing &Beyond for
lifelong compensation, as I have walked away from the trip with an incurable virus that you guys failed to mention in
your travel notes. I think in order to keep this virus under control I will need to continuously invest financial resources.
I now have the Safari Bug, a very severe form of it. And as Racquel at &Beyond Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge
told me, I am lucky not to have caught Khaki Fever, because the safari bug makes you more susceptible to it. I am
distraught as researching the internet I am incapable of finding any treatments, which ultimately means I will have to
succumb to the virus.
This was the most amazing trip I have made, and I have travelled a lot! It was brilliant from start to finish. Not only did
everything work like clockwork, the lodges, the people, the settings, food, everything, you name it, was simply perfect.
I was also fortunate to meet amazing travellers along the way who joined my enthusiasm.
I absolutely loved &Beyond Xaranna Okavango Delta Camp my best camping trip ever and the architecture of
&Beyond Sandibe is incredible. Thank you so much for your great recommendations, I cannot wait to come back and
see more.

KITCHEN SAFARI
MAGIC INGREDIENT
CUPIDS KITCHEN
With Valentines Day on the horizon, Executive Chef Stuart Scott-King at &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve shares
some of his favourite recipes.
The perfect main course for your romantic celebration, Stuarts classic beetroot and feta tart is bursting with flavour.
With a thin, flaky crust, deep crimson beets and rich, creamy feta, this light meal can be served alongside a fresh,
flavourful salad.
No Valentines Day meal is complete without a decadent dessert as the grand finale. Stuarts recommendation is a
warm raspberry souffl. The intense berry flavour and of course the touch of bright red make it the perfect conclusion
for your romantic dinner-for-two.
BEETROOT & FETA TART

Ingredients for Crust

11/3 cup
1
/3 stick
1 tsp
Pinch
cup

All-purpose flour
Cold, unsalted butter; cut into cubes
Thyme leaves
Salt
Cold water

Ingredients for Filling

2
1
1 Tbsp
1 tsp
cup
1 Tbsp
1 Tbsp
1 Tbsp
cup
2
cup
Pinch

Large beetroot
Large leek; sliced into 1 inch pieces
Olive oil
Salt
Balsamic vinegar
Honey
Thyme leaves
Fresh basil
Feta
Eggs
Cream (half the fat)
Salt and pepper

Directions
Remove stems from the beetroots and scrub under cold
water. In a pot, bring water to a boil and then reduce to a
simmer. Place beets in covered pot and cook for 1 hour.
Once tender, remove beets and place under cold water.
With a paper towel, peel the skin off and slice thinly. Set
aside.
In a food processor, mix the flour, butter, thyme and
salt until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Add the
cold water and continue to mix until the dough comes
together. Form dough into a disc, cover tightly with
plastic wrap, and place in the refrigerator for at least 30
minutes.

Grease a 9-inch tart pan with butter. On a well-floured

surface, roll out the chilled dough approximately an
inch longer than the tart pan. Using a rolling pin, roll
the dough loosely around the entire pin to transfer the
dough to the tart pan. Cut off any extra dough and
return to the fridge covered for 15 more minutes.
Preheat oven to 180. Cut out an 8-inch circle out of
parchment paper. Place over crust and cover with pie
weights (uncooked beans or rice). Bake for 10 minutes.
Remove the parchment paper and weights and return to
the oven for 6 minutes.
Heat the olive oil in a saucepan over medium-low heat.
Add the leeks and cook until softened. Add the sliced
beets, vinegar, thyme, basil and honey. Season with salt
and reduce heat to low. Cook for 10-15 minutes, until
the sauce begins to thicken.
Pour the beet mixture over the tart and crumble feta
cheese on top.
Whisk eggs and cream together. Pour the egg mixture
over the tart. Sprinkle with extra thyme leaves on top.
Bake for 35-40 minutes. Serve with a side salad and
enjoy!

THE MIRACLE OF LIFE
&Beyond Ngala Private Game Reserve
By Ranger Andrew Nicholson
It was a cold and windy morning, so
it was a slow start out on the reserve.
Suddenly tracker Adam spotted a
giraffe cow in the distance. She was
standing alone, approximately 30 m
off the road and facing our direction.
Upon closer inspection, Adam
noticed something hanging between
her back legs. Using my binoculars to
get a better look, I realised that she
was in the midst of giving birth.
We sat quietly and watched in
complete amazement. The calfs
front legs came out with relative
ease, but it took what seemed like
ages for the mother to get past
the head and shoulders as she was
visibly experiencing discomfort.
She even began swinging her long
neck down and lifting it back up, as
she continued to push as hard as
possible.
At this point, we suspected there
were going to be some birthing
complications, perhaps even a
breech birth. It certainly appeared
so. After some time, a few
uncomfortable paces back and
forth, and even rotating in a circle to
check there were no approaching
predators, the female giraffe spread
her legs slightly and managed the allimportant next step.

Once she had passed the head and

shoulders, gravity took over and the
birth took place in less than a minute.
We were so fortunate that when this
happened she was actually facing
the opposite direction giving us all a
perfect view through a small gap in
the trees.
With quite a thud, the newborn
calf fell to the ground, breaking
the amniotic sac and severing the
umbilical cord. For some absurd
reason I felt the need to start
clapping, because I was so happy for
her, but I soon realised that I wasnt
watching an auditioned performance.
Sadly, our overwhelming delight
soon turned into heartbreak. It
appeared as though the giraffe had
given birth to a stillborn calf. The
distressed mother turned around
and immediately began nudging
her lifeless calf. I looked back to see
some very glassy eyes on the faces of
the guests behind me. Many anxious
moments passed, as we all feared the
worst.
The giraffe licked and kicked,
repeating the sequence again in an
effort to wake her young and remove
the placenta from around its face to
prevent any breathing obstruction.
Suddenly, we saw the newborn jolt
and slowly begin to breathe.

There is no way I can even begin

to explain this feeling in words.
We were overjoyed and overcome
by the many emotions that were
experienced in such a short space of
time. We sat for the next two and a
half hours watching the calf attempt
to stand up. Each time it would gain
energy and even a little balance, it
would fall to the ground breaking
any confidence. We didnt stay long
enough to see the calf walk with
ease, but it was certainly on the right
track as we drove away.
It was an unbelievable morning that
Adam, the Marlow family and I will
never forget. What made our sighting
even more memorable was the fact
that just the night before we had
watched a pride of lions feeding on a
young giraffe, as its grieving mother
kept walking back towards the lions,
watching in disbelief.
Working in the bush truly allows
one to experience the circle of life
in all its many shapes and forms.
Later that afternoon we got word
from fellow ranger Mike Anderson
that the giraffe and her calf were
walking comfortably and were seen
approximately 1.5 km from where we
had left them that morning. This was
the happy ending that we were all
hoping for.

AN UNLIKELY STAND-OFF
&Beyond Exeter River Lodge
By Ranger Craig Parsons
It was cool and cloudy as we head
out that morning in the Sabi Sand
Game Reserve. I told my guests it
was the perfect weather for African
wild dogs to be out hunting. They
hunt with stamina by out-running
their prey, and with the cooler
temperatures, they would more than
likely be on the move for longer
periods.
Knowing where the pack was the
afternoon prior helped us start our
search for these fascinating animals.
Several vehicles spread out and took
different roads in the area where the
dogs were last seen. I was hoping
that someone would find their tracks.
Eventually the dogs were discovered
and we all took turns viewing them. I
allowed the other vehicles that were
closer to the sighting to view the
animals first. On our way, we had
spotted a large herd of elephants
on the same road as the dogs, so
we stopped to enjoy a viewing. I
was anxious to get to the wild dogs
before they moved off, so I explained
to my guests that we could return to
the herd of elephant afterwards.
Getting through the elephants was
interesting, but we eventually moved
past safely and found the dogs just
200 m from the herd. The adults
and puppies were running around
chasing each other. Every now and
then the pups would approach an
adult and chitter at the adults mouth,
pleading for them to regurgitate
some meat from a kill they had
consumed earlier that morning.
The pack even chased each other
under the vehicle and all around us; it
was a truly magical experience. They
were completely unfazed and totally
undisturbed by our presence, which
I find so fascinating. After playing
for a while, the adults decided that
the cavorting was over and the pack
needed to move out and find a
resting place.

The dogs decided that heading

back past my vehicle was the best
route, so I gave way and let them
pass. I eventually turned around,
anticipating that I would try and
catch up with them. Well, it didnt
take long because the pack had run
straight into the elephants. Now this
was something to see a stand-off
between elephants and wild dogs.
Not something you see every day!
The adult dogs were familiar with
elephants, but I knew this was
going to be an interesting learning
experience for the pups. Some of
the adults had already turned off into
the bush, but the pups were clearly
intrigued and ran straight towards the
elephants.
When the mighty elephants gave
charge, throwing dust all over the
puppies, they soon realised the
elephants didnt want to play. Some
even trumpeted at them, expressing
their displeasure. When you are in
close proximity to an elephant, this
trumpeting is incredibly loud and
disconcerting. Finally the pups turned
and ran, following in the adults paw
prints. They seemed very confused
and scared, and certainly appeared to
have learned an important lesson.
The elephants charged once again
and the last of the puppies scattered
in all directions. We also took this cue
and headed in the opposite direction
in the hopes of meeting up with the
pack again. We were in luck and
soon reunited with the dogs as they
were settling down after a morning
spent hunting, playing and learning
a lesson from a herd of elephants. It
was an incredible, rare encounter
the kind that keeps me going in the
bush.

CLASSIC SAFARI ELEGANCE REFRESHED

The final lodge on our luxurious East

African circuit to receive its stylish
refresh is the iconic and muchloved &Beyond Bateleur Camp in
Kenyas Masai Mara.
Retaining the classic, sophisticated
safari charm of the original south
camp guest area, all upholstery,
cushions and carpets have been
refreshed and elegant mirrored wall
panels have been incorporated to
brighten the space. All of the original
curated artefacts and vintage pieces
have been restored to maintain the
camps essence and pay homage
to its olde world Out of Africa
elegance.

The arrival path has been rerouted

so that the vast, open Mara plains are
the first thing guests see upon arrival.
Long, lazy lunches are enjoyed
under the trees on comfortable
new lawn dining furniture and a
small interactive breakfast bar has
been added to the guest dining area
where signature omelettes are now
prepared daily.
This interior refresh is the second
phase of the camps three-stage
refurbishment. The first phase was
the recent addition of five brand new
customised four-seater safari vehicles
to the fleet. Each vehicle features a
canvas roof, sleek wooden interior

finish, fridge, reclining seats (with the

option to adjust for leg room), handy
camera mounts, useful charging
points and detachable sides that can
be rolled up or down depending on
the weather. Designed entirely with
comfort and convenience in mind,
these bespoke vehicles also enhance
the photographic safari experience.
The third and final stage will be an
extensive refurbishment of the guest
suites and shared guest areas, which
will take place in late 2016 or early
2017. Watch this space for the grand
reveal.

FUEL YOUR FAMILY WANDERLUST
Namibia is often overlooked as a travel destination, but the de Bruyn family proves its the ideal place for families
to reconnect. With the perfect balance of adventure, luxury, learning and tranquillity, Namibia is both a natural
playground for children and a peaceful escape for parents.
Mark and Alison recently took their two sons, Luke and Joel, on a Namibian self-drive adventure of a lifetime. Unsure
of what to expect, but adamant that Namibia was high on their bucket list, there was plenty of excitement and
anticipation as they set off to one of the most strikingly beautiful places on the planet.

ADVENTURE FOR THE YOUNG & YOUNG AT HEART

From dune climbing, sandboarding,
quadbiking and a catamaran cruise,
to scenic sundowners, stargazing and
the lifelong dream of floating in a hot
air balloon over the immense dunes,
each day was a new exploration with
something that appealed to each
person in the family.

It was a thrill for the young boys

to dig in the sand with their guide
and carefully reveal curious desert
critters, their animated squeals of
delight clearly contagious to their
onlooking parents. The hard work of
hiking up the enormous dunes was
rewarded tenfold as everyone raced

carefree down the side of the dune,

arms flailing, sand flying and laughter
echoing off the cascading dunes.
And peacefully hovering over the
desertscape in a hot air balloon was,
unanimously, a journey theyll never
forget.

UNEXPECTED BEAUTY
One would expect the drives to be long, straight, flat and uninspiring, yet Namibia pleasantly surprises newcomers
with its rugged, ever-changing terrain. The kaleidoscope of surprising colours continually shifts with the moving sun
and dancing shadows. Silvery gravel and yellow grasses slowly morph into mauve mountains and deep, terracotta
sand.
As they drove towards the heat-warped vista that unfolded ahead of them, the de Bruyns passed steep canyons, wide
open spaces, picturesque towns and arid, almost moon-like landscapes. The drive in itself was an adventure.

COSSETED BY LUXURY
When they arrived at &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge,
the family was welcomed with open arms and true
Namibian hospitality. It was like coming home.
The lodges ten stone and glass desert villas are
surrounded by sheer silence, total tranquillity and
romantic luxury. The refreshing pool certainly kept the
boys happily entertained and the evening stargazing in
the lodges private observatory captivated the foursome.
A resident astronomer was on hand to reveal the
impossibly starry sky and its fascinating constellations
and he carefully explained their significance in a way that
everyone could understand and appreciate.
Upon their return to everyday life, Alison reflected on
their grand desert adventure, saying, I feel like I have
lived now that I have seen Namibia properly. It enriched
my soul and to be able to experience it with Mark and
the boys will be something forever etched in our lifelong
memories and part of our being. A place where time
stands still, we were able to forget the real world for a
while and truly bond as a family.

LEAVE A LEGACY
LEADERS IN CONSERVATION
BUILDING ON 10 YEARS OF ISLAND CONSERVATION
With 33 luxury safari camps and
lodges in our portfolio, &Beyond
continues to have a positive
influence over more than 9 million
acres of protected wildlife land.
Equally important and increasingly
fragile are the worlds oceans, and
our growing collection of island
destinations is enabling &Beyond
to make a meaningful contribution
towards the ongoing protection and
preservation of marine habitats as
well.
The newest addition to the &Beyond
family, Vamizi Island in Mozambique
was specifically chosen for its
renowned ethos of conservation,
which aligns directly with our core
company ethos of Care of the Land,
Care of the Wildlife, Care of the
People and of course our fourth
unofficial C, Care of the Ocean.
With this new acquisition, &Beyond
will now actively promote and
contribute wherever possible to the
conservation of the Indian Ocean,
stretching from Zanzibar in the north
right down to the southern tip of
Mozambique.
Conservation has been a driving
force on &Beyond Vamizi Island
even before its six luxury villas
were opened, with a dedicated
conservation team present on the
island from 2005. &Beyond has
pledged to build on Vamizis proud
history of successful conservation
efforts.

The island is situated in a marine

sanctuary that was established by the
local Fisheries Council and covers
much of the eastern side of the
island, extending 3 km (almost two
miles) out to sea. Representing a
no-take fishing zone, this sanctuary
is a prime example of cooperation
between communities, government
and tourism entities, the founding
model that &Beyond was established
upon.
Just like one of its sister properties
&Beyond Mnemba Island, &Beyond
Vamizi is a significant breeding site
for the endangered green turtle
and is home to Mozambiques
largest recorded population of the
threatened species. With one of the
longest-standing turtle monitoring
programmes in East Africa based
on the island, Vamizis conservation
monitors patrol the beaches daily
to observe and record new turtle
activity.
Between December and July,
the turtles breeding season, the
monitors carefully tag each turtle
with a unique identification number,
recording data related to their
movements and the number of
eggs laid. Once the eggs hatch
after a period of 50 to 60 days, the
conservation monitors keep a close
eye on the hatchlings, ensuring their
safety until they reach the ocean.
Large congregations of grey reef
sharks are seen regularly at the

Neptunes Arm dive site, which is

situated within easy reach of the
island at certain times of the year.
The Vamizi conservation monitors
also tags the sharks enabling muchneeded research. This particular
school of sharks is one of the very
few known aggregations along the
East African coast, where shark
populations are severely threatened.
With all sharks in the aggregation
mature females, there is speculation
that this behaviour has something
to do with reproduction. &Beyond
Vamizi has initiated a programme
to help research this phenomenon
by tagging the sharks and recording
their movements throughout the
year.
With the local community a longstanding partner in conservation
efforts on Vamizi Island, &Beyond
will continue to work closely with
the Friends of Vamizi Trust through
our own social development partner
of choice, Africa Foundation.
Established in 2012, the aim of the
Friends of Vamizi Trust is to raise
funds for important community and
conservation projects. Similarly to
Africa Foundation, their main areas
of focus are education and incomegenerating initiatives.
We look forward to building on the
strong foundation of conservation
and community initiatives at &Beyond
Vamizi and working together with the
islands community to further these
goals.

WORKING TOGETHER FOR A BRIGHT FUTURE

When &Beyond Benguerra Island
joined our portfolio in 2014, Africa
Foundation immediately engaged
with the local Mozambican
communities to identify the top
priority projects on the island.
They met with the local elders
and other leaders to explain Africa
Foundations model, which depends
on communities taking ownership
of projects and being responsible for
their long-term management. The
Benguerra community was eager to
get involved and work on a shared
plan for their future.
THE HEART OF BENGUERRA
With approximately 1 500 inhabitants
that call Benguerra home, the
community identified their most
urgent need as the construction of
a multi-purpose centre (MPC) that
would serve as a focal point to bring
the villagers together. &Beyond and
Africa Foundation helped bring this
project to fruition and the Benguerra
Community Multi-Purpose Centre
was officially handed over at the end
of 2015.

The Benguerra community now has

a place where they can gather to
make shared decisions that affect
the future of their island. The local
community council finally has an
official meeting place and office
space where they can launch a
number of initiatives that will benefit
the entire island. While the building
of a clinic is being planned elsewhere
on Benguerra, until it is constructed,
one of the functions of the MPS will
be to serve as a centre for health
education.

LOOKING AHEAD
Africa Foundation continues
to engage with the Benguerra
community on several future
initiatives that have been identified
by the islanders. Access to fresh
water is an issue on the island, with
the current wells located relatively
far from the main village. Africa
Foundation is exploring ways to
relocate these wells closer to the
community, thus cutting down on
the time and effort required for them
to access fresh water.

The much-needed MPC will also

serve as a place of shelter for
Benguerras people. The exposed
position of some of the local homes
means that they become vulnerable
when severe weather or bad storms
threaten the coastline. The MPC was
therefore built in a safe and secure
location enabling it to act as a place
of shelter where villagers can take
refuge in times of bad weather.

Currently, the island only has a

primary school, which means that
older children have to travel
45 minutes to the mainland in an
open boat to attend classes, often
arriving wet and having had no
protection from the elements. One of
the long-term goals is to establish a
secondary school (or high school) on
the island. Watch this space for more
updates as we continue to work
hand in hand with the Benguerra
community.

San Jose galleon, Santos said.
A team of international experts,
the Colombian navy and the
countrys archaeology institute
discovered the wreck last week
near the island of Baru, the president said.
Sonar images have so far revealed bronze cannons made specifically for the ship, arms, ceramics
and other artifacts. Some 600
people died in the shipwreck.
Archaeological excavation and
scientific tests on the wreck will
continue to ensure it can be
properly preserved, Santos
explained.
The San Jose was the subject of
a legal dispute between Colombia
and Sea Search Armada (SSA), a
United States-based salvage company. SSA said in 1981 it had located the area where the ship sank.
The company and the government agreed to split any proceeds
from the wreckage, but the
government later said all treasure
would belong to Colombia, a
view that was backed by a U.S.
court in 2011.
Few government spokespeople
will be able to speak further on
the galleon until more investigations are completed, Santos said.
It was unclear how much of the
body of the ship remained and
whether it would be brought to
dry land.

The writer was a guest of the resort.

Benguerra is the definition of an

unspoiled tropical paradise. It is
the second largest of the six

surrounded by a national marine

DESIGN
................................................................

Formerly a bare-bones fishing

lodge, &Beyond purchased the
property a few years ago and
embarked on a $5.5-million (U.S.)
renovation. The book- and antiques-lined lobby, bar and dining areas now take full advantage
of the magnificent Indian Ocean
views. Each of the 13 thatchedroof villas are strung out along a
pristine stretch of north-facing
beach. Dense foliage and a few
cleverly placed stone walls allow
for an almost complete sense of
privacy. Inside each villa, dark,
exotic wood finishes and bright
textiles give the room an elegant,
but subdued character. The fourposter bed and oversized soaking
tub both face the ocean and,
while air-conditioning is available, a tall set of glass doors

slides open to let in the breeze.

The large deck with loungers and
a seating area surrounds the private infinity-edge plunge pool.

BEST AMENITY

My absolute favourite place to

hang out was on a suspended
bed beneath a small thatched
structure on the beach in front of
my room. It was an ideal place to
read and doze or just watch the
fishing boats disappear over the
horizon. When the daily parade
of &Beyonds riding horses
returned to their stable, it was
my signal to get ready for dinner.

FUN SIDE
STAR WARS ON SAFARI
Even before the group arrived
at the lodge, one of the guests,
Emmett, casually welcomed the rest
of the group to their Cape Town
accommodation sporting a leopard
print scarf and matching speedo. This
would set the tone for the rest of
their South African adventure.

What do Star Wars and safari have

in common? Not a whole lot, or
so we thought. You can imagine
our surprise when one afternoons
light-hearted prank inspired the most
memorable, impromptu costumeparty-slash-talent-show for a group
of friends visiting &Beyond Exeter
River Lodge.
Looking back, the costumes didnt
come about for any one particular
reason. Rather, it was a sequence of
curious events that eventually led to
this evening of comradery.

On their third day on safari, Emmett

decided to play a prank on ranger
Blaine Moolman, showing up for
afternoon tea in his leopard print
speedo. Somewhat taken aback,
Blaine handed him his coffee at
arms length. Emmett explained that
he thought everyone would be in
costume. They all had a good laugh
and Emmett quickly pulled out the
appropriate safari gear that was
concealed in his bag.
This somehow planted a seed and
the next morning Emmett pitched his
idea of an impromptu evening talent
show. Much to his surprise, everyone
was keen on the outlandish proposal.
When they gathered for high tea that
afternoon, there was a palpable air
of excitement, with faint whisperings
of what each performer was secretly
planning.

Then it happened Blaine

nonchalantly sauntered in wearing a
lion onesie. Innocently, he explained
that he thought everyone would be
in costume for their game drive. In
a flash of frenzy, the guests raced
back to their rooms and re-emerged
as Princess Leia clones, kitted out
in bathrobes and sunglasses, with
signature Princess Leia buns cleverly
fashioned out of beach towels.
Later that night, the most entertaining
and unforgettable talent show took
place. Tracker Colbert joined the
festivities donning a giraffe onesie
and the performances included
two singers, an &Beyond fashion
show with three costume changes,
a poetry reading about their safari
experience, a (rather tragic) juggling
act and a personalised awards
ceremony with official certificates
and a gift for each competitor. It
was a night that both the guests and
lodge staff will never forget.
Final goodbyes were exchanged with
watery eyes and friendships were
formed that will last a lifetime. After
all, isnt that what its all about?
