What is Self Concept?

Self concept is an individual's self-beliefs and selfevaluations

Describe the dimension/elements of Self Concept

The three dimension/elements of self-concept are
1. Complexity - number of distinct roles
2. Consistency - the compatibility of these roles
3. Clarity - the extent the person defines themselves
clearly, confidently, and consistently

Explain how the elements of self concept affects an

individual's behaviour and well-being
1. Complexity - protects our self-evaluation when some
roles are threatened or damaged
2. Consistency - helps people adapt, but too much variation
causes internal tension and conflict
3. Clarity - more easily influenced by others when there is a
lack of confidence, experience more stress when making
decisions, and feel more threatened by social forces that
undermine self confidence and self esteem

What are the four processes that shape self concept?

1. Self-enhancement
2. Self-verification

3. Self-evaluation
4. Social Self

What is Self Enhancement?

A person's inherent motivation to have a positive selfconcept such as being competent, attractive, ethical, etc.

What is Self-verification
A person's inherent motivation to confirm and maintain
his/her existing self - concept.

What is Self-evaluation?
Self-evaluation is defined by three concepts
1. Self-esteem - how much a person likes/respects/satisfied
with themselves
2. Self-efficacy - a person's belief that he or she has the
ability or motivation, correct role perceptions, and
favourable situation to complete a task successfully
3. Locus of control - A person's general belief about the
amount of control he or she has over personal life events

What is the Social self?

People have personal and group identities
Social identity theory - a theory that explains that people
define themselves by the groups to which they belong or
have an emotional attachment

What is perception?
The process receiving information about and making sense
of the world around us.

Outline the perceptual process

1. Environmental Stimuli (5 senses) - We sense something
2. Selective Attention and Emotional Marker Response - We
focus on the sensed thing and possibly have an emotional
reaction
3. Perceptual organization and interpretation - We organize
the perceived thing and interpret it
4. Attitudes and behaviour - We react to or develop attitude
or behaviour against the perceived thing

What is selective attention?

The process of attending to some information received by
our senses and ignoring other information (think of the
basketball passing - gorilla walking video)

What is confirmation bias?

The tendency to screen out information that is contrary to
our decisions, beliefs, values, and assumptions and to more
readily accept confirming information

Discuss the effects of categorical thinking and mental

models in the perceptual process
Categorical thinking - organizing people and objects into
preconceived categories that are stored in our long term
memory.
Mental Model - visual or relational images in our minds that
represent the external world

What are common perceptual errors ?

Attribution Error
Self Fulfilling Prophecy
Stereotyping
Halo Effect
False Consensus Effect
Primacy Effect
Recency Effect

How does common perceptual errors influence

behaviour?
May lead to discrimination
May lead to miscommunication

What are three ways to improve perception in an

organizational context?
1. Awareness of perceptual bias
2. Improving self awareness
3. Meaningful interaction

Explain what it means to have a "global mindset."

An individual's ability to perceive, appreciate, and
empathize with people from other cultures to process
complex cross - cultural information.
