DRAFT INVITATION LETTER

From CEQ Chairman Jim Connaughton

To Invitees to Planned Jan. 23, 2003 WH Climate Sector Challenge Rollout

January 2,2002

[Name]
[Address]

Dear
------
It is my distinct pleasure to invite you to participate in a White House event to
announce and recognize the recent initiatives of several business and industry sectors,
and a leading national business organization on behalf of its members, to reduce the
projected growth in their greenhouse gas emissions. These voluntary programs respond
to a challenge to American business and industry that was issued by President Bush in his
February 14, 2002 speech outlining a new national strategy to address global climate
change.

The President's strategy establishes an ambitious national goal to reduce the

greenhouse gas intensity ofthe American economy by 18 percent in the next decade and
will require, as the President stated, the participation of "every sector of our economy."
The significant actions that will be announced at this event will initiate a significantly
heightened level of collaboration between the federal government and American business
and industry sectors. Initiatives such as those announced at this event and in the future
will contribute meaningfully toward achieving the President's national emissions
reduction goaL

Representatives of the various sectors will be joined by representatives of the

federal agencies with whom they have been working over the past several months in
developing these agreements. Federal officials joining me at the one-hour event include:
Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman, Secretary ofEnergy Spencer Abraham, Secretary
of Transportation Norman Mineta and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator
Christine Todd Whitman. . ;

The event will be held on Thursday, January ~3~ 2003, at 10 a.m. in the Indian
Treaty Room of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Participants will need to
th
arrive by 9:30 AM for clearance at the 17 Street entrance to the Eisenhower Executive
Office Building. Please RSVP to Natalie Towcimak of my office at 202 456-6460 no
later than COB January 16. For clearance purposes, for each participant, please provide
name, title, affiliation, date of birth and social security number.
