Double-T Nation’s Spring Preview Worksheet

This is my attempt to give you guys and gals a place to take some notes so that we can all share our thoughts
about the spring game. I've grouped every player by position and then by number with the hope and thought that
this will make watching the spring game a bit easier. The roster of players is from the official spring roster
distributed by the university prior to spring practices.

QUARTERBACKS
No. Player Pos. Ht / Wt Class Notes: ______________________________________
1 Steven Sheffield QB 6-4 190 Sr-3L ____________________________________________
3 Jacob Karam QB 6-1 205 Fr-RS ____________________________________________
7 Seth Doege QB 6-2 205 So-1L ____________________________________________
12 Taylor Potts QB 6-5 218 Sr-3L ____________________________________________
16 Brant Costilla QB 6-3 210 Fr-TR ____________________________________________
Player Focus: With both Sheffield and Potts out of the mix the focus is obviously on Doege and Karam. In last
week's scrimmage, Costilla didn't receive any snaps and I would imagine that both Doege and Karam will receive
all snaps in the final scrimmage.
Spring Questions: How far have both Doege and Karam progressed? Can Doege improve over last year's
spring performance? Can Karam, a redshirt freshman, pass Doege, a sophomore with another year of
experience, on the depth chart?
WIDE RECEIVERS
No. Player Pos. Ht / Wt Class Notes: ______________________________________
4 Derrick Mays WR 6-0 166 Fr-RS ____________________________________________
8 Jacoby Franks WR 6-1 185 Jr-2L ____________________________________________
13 E.J. Celestie WR 5-11 174 Fr-RS ____________________________________________
18 Eric Ward WR 5-11 202 Fr-RS ____________________________________________
19 Lyle Leong WR 6-1 165 Sr-3L ____________________________________________
22 Weston Benoit WR 5-11 187 Fr-TR ____________________________________________
26 Marlon Kraus WR 6-2 199 Fr-TR ____________________________________________
28 Jason Sabolboro WR 5-10 198 Fr-HS ____________________________________________
30 Jeremiah Mueller WR 6-1 202 Fr-HS ____________________________________________
80 Garrick McCray WR 5-10 184 So-RS ____________________________________________
86 Alexander Torres WR 6-2 196 So-1L ____________________________________________
87 Aaron Fisher WR 6-3 182 Fr-RS ____________________________________________
Player Focus: Same thing about the inside receivers, I'm excited to see if players like Mays, Celestie, Fisher and
especially Ward can make an impact during the spring game. There's lots of depth in front of all of these players
and in 2010 (there's only one senior in the bunch, Leong) and they better realize that their opportunity is now.
Spring Questions: Can Ward be a huge-impact receiver for this team? A game-breaker? Is Mays just fast or can
he catch the ball and does he work the entire field? Of the other redshirt freshmen (Mays, Celestie, and Fisher)
which one will break out of the pack? Can Franks, again a talented player, be a consistent playmaker for this
team?

INSIDE RECEIVERS
No. Player Pos. Ht / Wt Class Notes: ______________________________________
48 Ryan Haliburton TE 6-4 245 So-1L ____________________________________________
2 Cornelius Douglas IR 5-9 193 SoSq ____________________________________________
6 Austin Zouzalik IR 6-1 181 So-1L ____________________________________________
11 Tramain Swindall IR 6-3 180 Jr-2L ____________________________________________
17 Detron Lewis IR 6-0 205 Sr-3L ____________________________________________
82 Nancy James IR 6-3 216 Jr-2L ____________________________________________
83 Blake Kelley IR 5-11 184 Sr-Sq ____________________________________________
Player Focus: Personally, I'm going to be focusing on the lesser known players, including Douglas, Zouzalik and
Haliburton. I know what Lewis and Swindall can do.
Spring Questions: OC Brown talked about how Douglas is one of the players that can make defenses miss, will
Douglas be able to continue that trend from practice to games? Will Lewis be the impact player that he was
projected to be after Crabtree's departure? Will Zouzalik's late-season improvement garner him more playing time
this year? Can Swindall be the impact receiver he is supposed to be?
RUNNING BACKS
No. Player Pos. Ht / Wt Class Notes: ______________________________________
10 Harrison Jeffers RB 5-9 204 So-1L ____________________________________________
20 Josh Talbott RB 6-0 199 Fr-Sq ____________________________________________
24 Eric Stephens RB 5-8 182 So-1L ____________________________________________
25 Baron Batch RB 5-11 205 Sr-3L ____________________________________________
31 Tim Graves RB 5-8 170 Fr-HS ____________________________________________
32 Aaron Crawford RB 5-11 204 Jr-1L y ____________________________________________
36 Gerardo Acevedo RB 6-1 197 Jr-1L ____________________________________________
37 Andre McCorkle RB 6-2 204 Jr-Sq ____________________________________________
Player Focus: The biggest question is whether or not the running game will have a bigger impact under OC
Brown's offense. Batch and Stephens have both seen limited roles this spring and would expect that to continue
for the spring game.
Spring Questions: Can Jeffers continue his spring progress and make an impact in the final spring game? Will
Crawford push for playing time? How arre Acevedo and McCorkle utilized? Will they see running plays or are they
merely blocking backs?
OFFENSIVE LINE
No. Player Pos. Ht / Wt Class Notes: ______________________________________
52 John Weidenhof DS 5-8 213 Fr-HS ____________________________________________
60 Jesse Smitherman DS 6-4 235 Jr-Sq ____________________________________________
59 Joel Gray OL 6-6 306 Fr-RS ____________________________________________
61 Jonathan Guerra OL 6-3 281 So-Sq ____________________________________________
62 James Marcuse OL 6-2 283 Fr-HS ____________________________________________
65 LaAdrian Waddle OL 6-6 350 So-1L ____________________________________________
66 Deveric Gallington OL 6-4 350 So-1L ____________________________________________
68 Terry McDaniel OL 6-7 335 So-1L ____________________________________________
70 Chris Olson OL 6-5 296 Sr-3L ____________________________________________
71 Kyle Clark OL 6-5 277 Fr-RS ____________________________________________
72 Beau Carpenter OL 6-7 275 Fr-HS ____________________________________________
73 Justin Keown C 6-4 302 Sr-3L ____________________________________________
74 Mickey Okafor OL 6-7 319 Jr-2L ____________________________________________
75 Blake Emert OL 6-5 287 Jr-1L ____________________________________________
78 Lonnie Edwards OL 6-5 290 Jr-2L ____________________________________________
Player Focus: I'll be focusing on the right side of the line for most of the scrimmage. The play of Gallington,
Waddle and to some extent, Okafor will be key to having the same type of offensive success that most Red
Raiders are accustomed.
Spring Questions: Can the right side of the line keep the quarterback upright for the game. Has McDaniel fully
recovered from his knee injury? What's the progression of the two other freshmen from last year, Gray and Clark?

DEFENSIVE LINE
No. Player Pos. Ht / Wt Class Notes: ______________________________________
5 Donald Langley DT 6-2 295 Jr-TR ____________________________________________
47 Myles Wade DT 6-2 340 Jr-1L ____________________________________________
75 Chris Knighton DE 6-3 240 Fr-RS ____________________________________________
82 Kerry Hyder DE 6-3 255 Fr-RS ____________________________________________
83 Omar Ontiveros DL 6-2 230 Fr-HS ____________________________________________
86 Cody Rogers DT 5-11 286 Fr-HS ____________________________________________
88 Taylor Boss DT 6-3 255 Fr-HS ____________________________________________
89 Aundrey Barr DE 6-3 238 Fr-RS ____________________________________________
90 David Neill DL 6-5 280 Jr-2L ____________________________________________
93 Colby Whitlock DL 6-2 287 Sr-3L ____________________________________________
95 Pearlie Graves DT 6-1 278 Fr-RS ____________________________________________
97 Britton Barbee DT 6-2 296 Sr-2L ____________________________________________
99 Chris Perry DL 6-4 300 Jr-2L ____________________________________________
Player Focus: It's all about how and where players like Hyder, Barr and Knighton line up through the course of
the scrimmage and how well they're able to get pressure on the quarterback. Their success will be one of the
biggest keys to the 2010 season.
Spring Questions: How much pressure do the defensive tackles generate in the 3-4 defense? Will some of the
JUCO's and transfers made an impact immediately, namely Wade and Langley? How do the aforementioned
Hyder, Barr and Knighton handle the offensive tackles.
LINEBACKERS
No. Player Pos. Ht / Wt Class Notes: ______________________________________
13 Julius Howard LB 6-1 208 Sr-3L ____________________________________________
18 Tanner Foster LB 6-3 209 So-1L ____________________________________________
19 Brandon Mahoney LB 6-2 203 Fr-RS ____________________________________________
20 Bront Bird LB 6-3 240 Sr-3L ____________________________________________
23 Dion Chidozie LB 6-1 194 Fr-RS ____________________________________________
37 Rodney Darrington LB 5-9 192 Fr-HS ____________________________________________
40 Quinn Deal LB 6-2 217 Sr-TR ____________________________________________
41 Sam Fehoko LB 5-11 220 Jr-2L ____________________________________________
42 Daniel Cobb S 6-1 211 Fr-RS ____________________________________________
45 Tyrone Sonier LB 6-2 225 Jr-2L ____________________________________________
50 Daniel Sandoval LB 5-11 194 Fr-HS ____________________________________________
51 Bonner Morren LB 6-0 217 So-Sq ____________________________________________
56 Jonathan Brydon LB 6-3 220 Sr-1L ____________________________________________
57 Brian Duncan LB 6-1 240 Sr-3L ____________________________________________
62 Caleb Schneider LB 6-3 241 So-Sq ____________________________________________
96 Michael Aguilar LB 5-11 226 Sr-Sq ____________________________________________
Player Focus: There's really a handful of players that will be interesting to watch, especially after the position
change. Because their play will largely affect how well Texas Tech does next year, I'll focus on Bird and Duncan
for quite some time.
Spring Questions: We've heard quite a bit about how some of the younger guys are much faster than the
linebackers that playaed last year, but how fast and how well do players such as Chidozie, Mahoney and Cobb?
Backups like Fehoko and Sonier will need to replace starters next year, how close are they to playing?
SAFETIES
No. Player Pos. Ht / Wt Class Notes: ______________________________________
1 Terrance Bullitt S 6-3 182 Fr-RS ____________________________________________
7 Will Ford S 6-1 186 So-1L ____________________________________________
16 Cody Davis S 6-2 200 So-1L ____________________________________________
26 Franklin Mitchem S 6-2 198 Sr-2L ____________________________________________
30 Brett Dewhurst S 6-0 193 Jr-2L ____________________________________________
38 Jordan Osborne S 5-11 180 Fr-TR ____________________________________________

39 Matt Bonano S 6-0 175 Jr-HS ____________________________________________

Player Focus: Most of us know what we have when watching Davis, Mitchem and Dewhurst. Ford did an excellent
job of forcing himself on the field last year. Bullitt has the genes to be a good player, it will be interesting to see
how well he's adjusting to college play.
Spring Questions: Ford is supposed to be all over the field in various positions, how well does is he playing at
cornerback rather than his natural safety position? Bullitt redshirted last year, where is he lined up and could he
eventually become a player like Ford?

DEFENSIVE BACKS
No. Player Pos. Ht / Wt Class Notes: ______________________________________
10 Yashua Williams DB 6-3 181 Fr-RS ____________________________________________
12 D.J. Johnson DB 6-0 170 So-1L ____________________________________________
22 Jared Flannel DB 5-11 167 Jr-2L ____________________________________________
24 Corey Lee DB 5-8 160 So-Sq ____________________________________________
28 LaRon Moore DB 5-9 200 Sr-3L ____________________________________________
29 Marcus Thomas DB 5-10 171 Fr-HS ____________________________________________
31 Eugene Neboh CB 5-11 174 So-Sq ____________________________________________
32 Malcolm Gilliam DB 5-10 180 Fr-TR ____________________________________________
33 Chris Smith DB 5-10 193 Fr-HS ____________________________________________
34 Sawyer Vest DB 5-10 178 So-Sq ____________________________________________
35 Arlan Waller DB 6-0 184 So-Sq ____________________________________________
36 Jarvis Phillips DB 6-0 189 Fr-RS ____________________________________________
87 Travis Malone DB 6-1 224 So-Sq ____________________________________________
Player Focus: I'm as intrigued as you about how the cornerbacks will play. Moore, Phillips and Johnson have
made some noise on the field this spring and there's talented freshmen arriving over the summer. If the
cornerbacks are on an island, I'm very interested.
Spring Questions: Johnson burst onto the scene last year because of his athleticism, is he able to continue that
with the new staff or has a player like Phillips passed him up on the depth chart. Williams was supposed to be a
talented defensive back, but was he between a cornerback and a safety, where is he lined up and how much is he
playing?
KICKERS AND PUNTERS
No. Player Pos. Ht / Wt Class Notes: ______________________________________
9 Jonathan LaCour P 6-2 220 Sr-2L ____________________________________________
43 Ryan Erxleben P 6-0 190 So-1L ____________________________________________
40 Jeremy Elder PK 5-9 160 Fr-HS ____________________________________________
49 Donnie Carona PK 6-0 218 Jr-2L ____________________________________________
84 Bradley Hicks PK 6-0 164
____________________________________________Jr-RS ____________________________________________
85 Matthew Williams PK 5-8 164 Sr-2L
Player Focus: Anyone else slightly interested in the punting battle between LaCour and Erxleben? With LaCour
being suspended the first four games and Carona not getting the job done, Erxleben was a true saving grace last
year.
Spring Questions: Is Williams still kicking field goals? Is Carona getting more height on his field goals? Hicks
signed last year, can he kick and is he a possible replacement for Williams and/or Corona?
