OBSERVATIONS
8
5-Year old Nida Anum reported to the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer
Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) in 1996 with complaints of pain in
both legs. The intensity of the pain reached a point where she was unable to walk
and became progressively weaker.

Investigations carried out at the Hospital confirmed the diagnosis of Acute

Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Supportive therapy was immediately
administered to improve Anum’s nutritional status so that she could bear the
extensive treatment of her disease.

During treatment Nida experienced relapses and remissions, but finally, a year ago she was pronounced
disease-free. Currently, she is on follow-up. We all wish her a healthy, prosperous and fulfilling life.

Sidra Arif, a six year old cute little girl came to Shaukat Khanum Hospital in
March 1999. she was severely malnourished and had pain in her joints. Before
coming to us she had undergone some tests at a local hospital according to which
she was told to be suffering some serious disease.

At Shaukat Khanum Hospital she was investigated thoroughly for her illness and
was diagnosed to have blood cancer (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia).
Immediately after the completion of  the first phase of her treatment, it was found
that she had responded extremely well to the therapy and her disease was in
complete remission. After two years of intensive treatment, which ended in 2001,
she was absolutely disease-free. Now, for the last fourteen months, she is on
follow-up with no sings of disease. Sidra will be joining school. Let us all pray
for the good health and prosperous life.

CHILDREN’S CANCER
Children's cancers are rare. Only 1 in every 600 children under 15 years of age develops a
cancer, and these are quite different from cancers affecting adults. They tend to occur in different
parts of the body, they look different under the microscope and they respond differently to
treatment. Cure rates for children are much higher than for most adult cancers and over 60% of
all children can now be completely cured.

What causes cancer?

9
Nobody knows the cause of cancer, although there are many theories. A great deal of research is
currently underway studying a number of possible causes.
In general cancer occurs when cells in the body become out of control and multiply. They stop
working properly and as their numbers increase they form a lump or tumour. When cancer cells
break away and spread to other parts of the body they may produce secondary tumours known as
metastases.
Cancers are not infectious. It is exceptionally rare for a second child in a family to develop
cancer. Parents often worry that their child has a cancer because of something they did or did not
do. This is not the case and parents should not feel guilty or take any sort of blame for their child
developing cancer. Although the total number of children developing cancer has changed little in
the last 40 years, the prospects for many have improved dramatically with advances in treatment.

Tests
Some tests are repeated during the course of treatment to study progress and check for any side
effects of treatment.
Biopsy
Blood Tests
Bone Marrow Aspirate
X-rays
Ultrasound Scan
Bone Scan
CT Scan
MIR (magnetic resonance imaging)

Staff Involved In the Care of Children

Many people will be involved in the care of child whilst in hospital. Some of them are described
below:

Pediatric oncologist
Ward Doctor
Nurse

10
Surgeon
Radiotherapist
Radiologist
Psychologist
Nutritionist
Pharmacist
Play therapist
Pathologist

Treatment
At present, there are three main ways of treating cancer. The tumour can be removed by
operation (surgery); cancer cells can be killed by radiation (radiotherapy), or they can be killed
with drugs (chemotherapy)

Side Effects of Treatment

Since chemotherapy and radiotherapy work by killing dividing cells, they will affect normally
dividing cells as well as malignant (cancerous) ones. The normal cells which divide most rapidly
in the body are those in the bone marrow, the gut and the hair follicles. These are the areas where
the immediate side effects of treatment are seen. The following are the main temporary side
effects which may be experienced as a result of treatment for cancer:
Bone marrow suppression (Low Blood Count)
Risk of infection
Hair loss
Loss of appetite and weight
Drowsiness

Longer-Term Side Effects

Puberty and fertility
Growth & development
Heart & lungs
Kidney problems

11
Intellectual development and education
Second cancer

ABOUT CANCER
Cancer Types

 Prostate cancer
 Breast cancer
 Colon cancer
 Bowel cancer
 Lung cancer
 Brain cancer

All living things - ourselves included - are made up of cells. Cells are microscopic
packages of living material and we have billions of them. They come in many different
types: liver cells, brain cells, blood cells and so on. In the normal adult, cells only grow
and divide slowly and under very tight control to make sure that the number of cells in
each tissue stays the same. Cancer begins when one cells changes and starts growing and
dividing rapidly and out of control. This one cells divides to give two cells, then four, eight
and so on until they form growing mass of cancer cells - called a tumor.

INTRODUCTION
It is estimated that about 150,000 new cancer cases are diagnosed in Pakistan each year. Shaukat
Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Center was built with the mission of providing
state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic facilities for cancer patients irrespective of their ability
to pay.

THE HOSPITAL

13
Over the past decade, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre has
established itself as a centre of excellence providing comprehensive care free of cost to
thousands of indigent cancer patients. This pioneering, state-of-the-art hospital located in the
heart of the Punjab was founded by Imran Khan, one of Pakistan's most illustrious cricketers. As
a charitable institute, it is funded predominantly from the donations of friends and well-wishers
from around the country and across the world.

IMRAN KHAN

14
The inspiration to build the Hospital came from the misfortune and suffering of one individual,
Shaukat Khanum, the mother of legendary captain of Pakistan's World Cup–winning cricket
team, Imran Khan. His mother's death and the personal experience of dealing with cancer in a
loved one convinced him of the need for a state of the art cancer center with access to everyone,
including those who could not otherwise afford the expensive care.

The result was the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, in Lahore,
the first and only cancer hospital of international standards in Pakistan, dedicated to providing
first-class treatment of cancer to all its patients, irrespective of their ability to pay.

Mission Statement

15
To act as a model institution to alleviate the suffering of patients with cancer through the
application of modern methods of curative and palliative therapy irrespective of their ability to
pay, the education of health care professionals and the public and perform research into the
causes and treatment of cancer.

History

Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) is a state-of-
the-art cancer centre located in Lahore, Pakistan. It is a project of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial
Trust, which is a charitable organization established under the Societies Registration Act XXI of
1860 of Pakistan. The institution is the brainchild of Pakistani cricket superstar, Imran Khan.

Fund Raising

Imran Khan made a nation-wide appeal for the collection of funds from a match between
Pakistan and India on November 10, 1989 at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore which raised Rs.
2,902,600. This was followed by a series of more than 50 successful fund raisers held throughout
the world. Pakistan's win under Imran's captaincy in the 1992 cricket world cup in Melbourne
helped fundraising efforts. He was able to collect one and a half million pounds in just six weeks
after the World Cup when the same amount had taken 2 years to collect earlier. He donated his
entire prize money of 85,000 pounds for the project. In 1994 when the project required more
financing for the ongoing construction, Imran Khan launched a mass contact campaign in which
he toured 27 cities in the country and collected Rs. 120 million. During the entire campaign for
the construction of the hospital, over a million individual donors from ordinary citizens to the
rich and famous pitched in. Everything from cash to jewelry and valuables was donated.

PRELIMINARY DATA COLLECTION

As far as preliminary data collection is concerned, we gathered our data from two main
sources;
Informal interview
Literature survey

Informal Interviews:
We conducted informal interviews from almost 500 people, related to cancer treatment (directly

or indirectly), out of which, more than 89% prefer Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer
Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC). By conducting informal interviews with the
people, we have come to know that whether there are so many other private hospitals providing
cancer treatment but majority of cancer patients rely on Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer
Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC). People prefer this hospital due to these
factors:
Patient’s Satisfaction

PROBLEM DEFINATION

Our research will be about the satisfaction level of people regarding their treatment of cancer in
Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) one of
the best hospital in the world providing best treatment of cancer but the question arises that are
the people who go there are fully satisfied with their services or not the basic aim of our research
study is to check and get the people review regarding this and what efforts required to improve
their services.
Our main focus will be on these two research questions:

“Why People prefer their cancer treatment with

Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research
Centre (SKMCH&RC)?”

22
Or
“What is the level of satisfaction with Shaukat
Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre
(SKMCH&RC)with respect to cancer treatment?”

THEORATICAL FRAMEWORK

After conducting the interviews, completing a literature survey, and defining the problem, we are
ready to develop a theoretical frame work.

Dependent Variable:
“Level of Satisfaction in Treatment of Cancer”
About 150,000 new cancer cases are diagnosed in Pakistan each year

Independent Variables:
International Standard Treatment
As there are so many other renowned hospitals in the city, but most of them lack
standardized treatment facilities.

Financial Aid
For the patiets who cannot afford such an expensive teartment, as most of the people in
Pakistan are below the line of poverty.

Trust
For more than a decade this hospital is serving the nation.

Best Services

23
In time diagnoses and treatment.

Cooperative Staff
The charitable cause of free treatment to poor helps in increasing the satisfaction level of
the staff.

Moderating Variable:
Imran Khan’s popularity
One of the best cricketers in the history of international cricket and a prominent political
leader as well.

Intervening Variable:
Management
R&D
HRM

Extraneous Variables:
Political Stability:
It is assumed that political condition is sound in the country, because Imran Khan is a
political leader as well.
