WFBC (B93.7) Greenville, S.C., another CHR station
of the year nominee, adds that B93.7 has heritage
and consistency: The Hawk & Tom morning show
has been with us, and relevant to the market, for over
18 years. They are in the community with bits, laughs
and charity work.
Another commonality among nominated stations: working as a team. Cookeville Communications top 40 WKSW (98.5 Kiss FM)
Cookeville, Tenn., is nominated for CHR station of
the year for the second straight year. PD Freaky Dave

While Marconis arent awarded for promotions

[For] a viral video promotion around Anna Kendricks Cups, [we] invited the community to show up

running team that participates in weekly fun runs that draw thousands of people
per event. [Plus] Beasley provides us with the resources to do cash contesting

CONNECTING TO THE COMMUNITY

Ask WJMN (Jamn 94.5) PD Dylan Sprague how Clear Channels Boston rhythmic station earned its Marconi nomination for major market station, and hell

We were tested several times, from blizzards to Superstorm Sandy, and the events surrounding the marathon.
Each time Jamn provided an outlet for listeners to get
informed, discuss and heal.
Community involvement also runs deep at WMGX,
according to Kirshbaum. In the past year we helped
establish Girls on the Run, which empowers young
girls through physical activity, and contributed to the opening of a new shelter
for homeless teens. Weve matched shelter animals with forever homes and
hosted the first ever Love on the Run 5K for straight and gay couples, following the passage of Maines marriage equality law. Coast 93.1 is more than just

way that fits their personality and the station brand. Our new morning show
with Chunky, Ghia & Tingle took our annual Backpack Challenge promotion

SO, HOW DOES IT FEEL?

For Chicago adult top 40 WTMX (101.9 the Mix) major market personality
nominees Eric & Kathy, it feels incredibly humbling to be nominated. Considering both of us grew up in Chicago and have had the privilege of hosting the
show on the Mix for 18 years, it will be
ERIC & KATHY
a true honor to represent our hometown and Hubbard Radio at the Marconi Awards. While Y107s Cosmo &
Whitney have already won an award
this year from the Missouri Broadcasters Assn., the Marconi nomination is, nonetheless, unbelievable.
Were coming up on our two-year anniversary of doing the morning show together, so being nominated for such a
prestigious award is amazing.
For some nominees, this year is a return trip to the awards. Even if the third
time isnt the charm for Cookevilles Kiss FM, Freaky Dave says, Our greatest
accomplishment is still when someone comes up and shakes our hand and says,
Thank you, or wants to reminisce about some bit they heard during mornings.
To 98.5 Kiss FM, that is truly the greatest award. Kirshbaum, whose WMGX
won in 2011, calls it an honor to be in the company of the other excellent stations in the category. Then theres seven-time nominee and four-time winner
WVAQ and Neff: Each has won station and personality of the year twice. While
its always a good feeling to be recognized by your peers, its also a big deal not
only for the management and staff of WVAQ but for our listeners and advertisers who support us.
As exciting as it is for tonights nominees, its just as much so for the host,
Kelly says. It always makes me feel good to walk into a radio station lobby and
see Marconi Awards, because it shows radio is very special. It feels good that
the Marconis recognize the hard work we do.
Billboard wishes all the finalists good luck at tonights awards. For full coverage
of this years Marconi winners, be sure to visit Billboard.biz tomorrow morning.

The Power Of Brats,

Harmonizers And
Mahomies
Remember what being a fan of a recording artist was like before the Internet and social media?
With few exceptions (such as Madonna Wannabes), an artists fans
were called fans. There were no (Michael) Boltonators, Fan Jovis
or anything like that.
Fans wanting to reach other fans of the same artist had to use the phone
orgulpthe mail. Those wanting to join a fan club or reach out to an
artist had to mail a letter and waitand wait and waitfor a response.
Fans wanting to hear an artists new song on the radio had to keep calling to request it. And wait, and wait.
Maybe that last one hasnt changed. But social media has shifted the
power in favor of fans, making it easier for them to communicate, unite,
perhaps even get a song on top 40. Not only that: Artists themselves understand and know how to harness that power. Ask Lady Gaga about her
Little Monsters.
Its not that radio didnt pay attention to fan activity before the digital
age. Its just that its now harder to ignore, and there are times it might
actually be worthy of attention. WJIM (97.5 Now FM) Lansing, Mich., PD
Josh Strickland says, Fan activity is vital in measuring a songs value.
[While mostly] annoying, fan club activity in some cases let me know there
was a new song from that artist.
Thats how I discovered Cher Lloyds I Wish. During my nightly Twitter check, I noticed multiple tweets from
LLOYD
brats (the pet name for Lloyd fans) reading, Dont forget to request #iWish by @
CherLloyd at your local radio stations.
Some were more specific: San Antonio,
vote for #iWish tonight at 9pm when they
play it on @941KTFMSA. Then I found
the smoking gun: Tweets from Lloyd herself (or the person who tweets for Lloyd)
reading, Lets keep tweetin local radio stations brats!!! #iWish. I noticed radio people
tweeting as well, such as KIYS (101.7 Kiss FM) Jonesboro, Ark.s Brandon
Baxter: The @CherLloyd fans are out in force today! Great response for
#FirstSpinOn1017KISSFM.
I Wish isnt the only song impacting top 40 being tweet-bombed. From
members of the TWFanmily (the name for fans MAHONE
of the Wanted) came #TWFanmily please
help We Own The Night get played on Hot
99.5! Fifth Harmonys Harmonizers tweeted,
Thank you for requesting miss movin on the
radio we love you!!!!!!! please keep requesting.
According to KKHH (Hot 95-7) Houston PD
Mark Adams, this can get a song on top 40
under the right circumstances. Austin Mahones first song 100% broke
out of social media for us. Id never heard of him prior to the blitzkrieg the
Mahomies unleashed on Hot 95-7. We liked the record, put it on and it became a medium-sized hit for us. But Strickland warns, Its often easy to
discern between organic fans and fan club members. That is to say, who has
actually been moved by a song versus who is just trying to move a song.

QUE STIONS

Answered
John Ivey

Senior VP of Programming, Clear Channel Media and

Entertainment; KIIS Los Angeles PD
(@johnivey)
For just one of the five stations nominated for the Marconi Radio Award of
awardslegendary stationmusic is its most important product. That station: KIIS (102.7 Kiss FM), Los Angeles mainstream top 40 mainstay for
nearly 40 years. At ceremonies held tonight (Sept. 19) at the NAB Show in
Orlando, Fla., KIIS goes up against news stations KYW Philadelphia and
WBBM Chicago, sports/talk WEEI-FM Boston and talker KFI Los Angeles for this coveted award. Top 40 Update asked PD John Iveywho since
summer 2004 has made KIIS Los Angeles most listened-to station every
quarterfor his thoughts headed into awards night.
The words legendary station carry with them much history and
accomplishment. In a market where theres always been competition for contemporary music listeners, how does KIIS continue to
hit the spot after nearly 40 years? Its really about making sure a station
feels like the city its in. KIIS always has the Los Angeles listener in mind, and
you should feel that vibe when you listen. With that in mind, we also always
strive to play what our listeners want to hear.
In this era of top 40, with music ever-changing and the audience a
moving target, what are the biggest challenges KIIS faces, and how
do you meet them? While being the most listened-to station in Los Angeles
is very rewarding, being constantly in the spotlight has its challenges. The entire staff keeps KIIS moving and current. We are not competing with anyone
but ourselves, so our challenge is making KIIS a great radio station every day.
KIIS has always been built on larger-than-life personalities, from
Charlie Tuna to Rick Dees to Ryan Seacrest. How do you know when
someone from outside the market, or at another station, is going

to work, and be the right voice and image,

on KIIS? Weve had a great track record developing our own talent. Its all about finding the
most entertaining personalities and providing
the best programming. It doesnt matter where
the talent is from, but its always extremely important to incorporate local, customized content to make sure the station feels like the city
its in. When Jimmy Steele was in San Diego for
us, he gave me Jesse Lozano, who was working
on the morning show. I started him on weekends, got him sounding like KIIS, and now he
has been doing afternoons since 2007. Jimmy
also gave me Sisanie, who was on-air part time
for two of our San Diego stations. She started part time here, and like Jesse was promoted to full time in 2008. My two latest hires are Nathan Fast, who is doing nights on
[KHTS] in San Diego, and Freddy Rivera from KGGI Riverside, for weekends. Freddy
started here as a [Rick] Dees intern, went out and learned how to do radio, and has
now come back to KIIS.
Larger than life also describes KIIS promotions. In a sprawling market
like Los Angeles, how do you make sure nearly everybody knows what KIIS
is doing? KIIS has been a part of peoples lives in Los Angeles for decades. So moms,
kids and the moms moms all have listened. With 4 million cume, great promotions
and great social media, its easier to get the word to everyone today than the day I got
here 12 years ago.
As PD, what have become your priorities in overseeing one of the worlds
most recognized top 40 brands? It all changes daily, really, which makes it very
exciting. Every day I drive in, I really have no clue what the day will hold or what new
technology will be fun to play with and learn from. Being involved in iHeartRadio from
the start has been very exciting. Just watching that grow from an idea to the incredible
platform it is now has been amazing, including booking the iHeartRadio Music Festival with Tom Poleman and John Sykes. Each year, I also put together Wango Tango
and Jingle Ball, which is always fun, but my basic priority is always the same: Do more
of what your listeners like and less of what they dont like.
Youre up against some hefty competition tonight, including your sister station down the hall. What do you think KIIS chances are? If you win, where
will you put the award? Im really excited to have KIIS nominated: Its the first time
for this award nomination since I got here in 2001. We didnt win our first Marconi until
2010, and then again in 2012, for CHR station of the year. They sit like proud bookends
on my desk. If we win, we will have to find a very special spot for this one. Rich Appel

BULLET POINTS GARY TRUST AND KEITH CAULFIELD

Belle Of The Ball:

Miley Cyrus Tops Hot 100
Miley Cyrus smashes her way to
her first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1, as
Wrecking Ball swings 22-1 with top
Streaming and Sales Gainer honors.
The song knocks Katy Perrys Roar
out of the top spot after two weeks.
Cyrus previously peaked at No. 2 on
the Hot 100 with prior single We Cant
Stop and 2009s Party in the U.S.A.
The suggestive video for Ball had
a record-breaking start, drawing 19.3

million global Vevo views in its first 24

hours following its Sept. 9 posting. With
the Hot 100s streaming component encompassing U.S.-only views for Vevo
videos on YouTube, among streams on
other services, the song soars 21-1 on
Streaming Songs with a 1,565% gain to
36.5 million streams in the charts tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS. Of
that sum, 92% are from YouTube views.
Ball concurrently crowns the sub-

scription services-based On-Demand

Songs chart, vaulting 18-1 with a 275%
increase to 2.8 million, the highest
total in the charts 18-month history.
Given the buzz surrounding Ball
and its video, the song naturally
charges 10-1 on Hot Digital Songs with
477,000 downloads sold, according to
Nielsen SoundScan. (Its her second
Hot Digital Songs No. 1, following
Party, which led for six weeks.) The
sum is a new best for Cyrus, passing
the 285,000 that Party sold during
Christmas week 2009. Its also the second-best total this year: Perrys Roar
opened with 557,000 four weeks ago.
With RCA Records having just
begun promoting the song to radio last
week, Ball starts on Hot 100 Airplay
at No. 59 with 21 million all-format audience impressions (up 327%), according to BDS. On Mainstream Top 40,
Ball bounces in at No. 35.
Ball soars to the Hot 100s summit with an almost 2-to-1 lead in overall chart points (up 700%) over Roar
(down 10%) after the latter led the list
the last two weeks. Still, Roar (1-2)
is the Hot 100s Airplay Gainer for a
third straight week. It holds at No. 2
on Hot 100 Airplay with a 20% lift to
148 million.
While Cyrus was already one of
three members of her family to reach
the Hot 100s top 10, shes the first
to top it. Her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus,
climbed to No. 4 with Achy Breaky
Heart in 1992, and brother Trace
Cyrus rose to No. 10 as part of Metro
Station with Shake It in 2008.
URBAN DEVELOPMENT: Country
star Keith Urban debuts at No. 1 on

Top 40

the Billboard 200 with Fuse, edging

out the also-arriving Kiss Land by the
Weeknd at No. 2. Less than 3,000
copies separate the albums, which
enter the chart with rounded figures
of 98,000 and 96,000, respectively,
according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Thats the closest margin between
Nos. 1 and 2 since early January, when
fewer than 2,000 copies separated
the soundtrack to Les Misrables
(92,000) and Mumford & Sons
Babel (91,000).
During release week, Urban performed on NBCs Today (Sept. 10,
the day of the albums release) and
ABCs The View and CBS Late
Show With David Letterman (both
on Sept. 11). As for the Weeknd, he
played Jimmy Kimmel Live on Sept.
12 and toured through the week, playing two shows in California (Berkeley
and Santa Barbara) and one in Seattle.
Urbans debut of 98,000 finds the
top-selling album on the chart selling fewer than 100,000 copies after
six weeks of sets topping the mark.
The No. 1 seller last dipped below
100,000 on the Aug. 10 chart, when
Selena Gomezs Stars Dance entered
with 97,000.

Katy Perrys Roar keeps making noise.

Nielsen SoundScan counts as current only sales within the first 18 months of an albums release (12 months for Classical and Jazz albums). Titles that stay in the top half of the Billboard
200, however, remain as current. Titles older than 18 months are catalog. Deep catalog is a
subset of catalog for titles out more than 36 months.
For week ending Sept. 15, 2013. Figures are rounded. Compiled
from a national sample of retail store and rack sales reports collected by Nielsen SoundScan.
