New Delhi: Even as the Centre worked with the Haryana

government to stabilise the
situation on the streets and
ensure water supply to Delhi
was not hit, BJP reached out
to the agitating Jats, promising that a bill would be brought in the next assembly session to extend quota benefits
to the community.
BJP chief Amit Shah set up
a committee under parliamentary affairs minister M Venkaiah Naidu to examine possible
options to implement the quota without running afoul of the
courts which struck down attempts of the previous Congress government to give OBC
status to Jats.

cretary in charge of Haryana,
said, The state government
will bring a bill in the very
next session to give quota benefits to the Jat community.
This is in keeping with BJPs
efforts since the government
was formed in Haryana.
Wary of generating resentment among current OBC beneficiaries, BJP is planning to
create a category outside the
27% reservation for backward
communities. The quantum of
reservation to be provided to
the Jat community has not been finalised yet.

he capital reeled under a

severe water crisis with
taps running dry in most areas of north, central and west
Delhi, as Jat agitators in Haryana continued to force a
shutdown of the citys lifeline, the Munak canal. The city
government put in place
emergency plans to start tanker services and ordered all
schools closed on Monday.
Army was belatedly sent
to the Munak canal, but forced to retreat by angry protesters after a clash claimed one
life. To make matters worse,
protesters on Sunday made
another cut in the canal, ensuring it will take more time
for normalcy to return. Nearly 8,000 protesters are blocking access to the canal, whose
gates have been damaged.
The Supreme Court is
scheduled to hear Delhi governments petition against
closure of the canal, which
accounts for a bulk of the citys water supply, at 10.30am
on Monday.
Monday is likely to be
worse, we have decided to
start 14 additional tanker filling points, taking the total to
140, said DJB chairperson
Kapil Mishra.
Delhi governments directorate of education on Sunday issued a circular closing
all government and private

Monday will be held at a later
date, it stated. P 2 & 3
