Configuration Instructions for TCD users of the eduroam service

This document contains configuration instructions TCD users wishing to use the eduroam service
when visiting participating institutions. Please note it is important to read any documentation the
remote site has relating to eduroam before visiting.

Generic configuration instructions


Operating system specific instructions are available further on in this document. This page presents
generic settings which can used for other operating systems.
SSID: The eduroam SSID (Service Set Identifier) is eduroam and is case sensitive. If you do not see
this SSID then you may need to specify it manually in the Wireless network properties. Please refer
to the remote sites documentation.
Encryption: Needs to be configured to use the encryption settings of the institution you are visiting
e.g. WPA2 with AES. This information should be available on the website of the remote institution.
Authentication: eduroam authentication requests are forwarded to Trinity College. TCD uses
Protected EAP (PEAP) MSCHAP v2 authentication.
Username and Password: Trinity College domain name must be specified when authenticating:
Syntax: [username]@college.tcd.ie
e.g. jbloggs@college.tcd.ie

1. Read any documentation the remote site has relating to eduroam
2. Right click on the network icon in the system tray, click Open Network and Sharing Center

3. Click Set up a new connection or network

4. Select Manually connect to a wireless network and click Next

5. Enter the following details:


a. Network name: eduroam (case sensitive)
b. Security type: [configure as per institution you are visiting]
c. Encryption type: [configure as per institution you are visiting]
d. Tick Connect even if the network is not broadcasting
e. Select Next

4. Select Change connection settings and then choose the Security Tab on the Wireless
Network properties window
5. Set the network authentication method to Protected EAP (PEAP) and then click Settings

6. Configure the Protected EAP Properties window as follows:


a

Untick the Validate server certificate box

Set Authentication Method to Secured password (EAPMSCHAP v2)

Tick Enable Fast Reconnect

Select Configure

7. On the EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties window untick the box beside Automatically use my
windows login name and click OK

8. Close all open windows


9. If you are not prompted for a network authentication window automatically, click on the
network icon in the system tray, select the eduroam network and click Connect

10. Enter the following details:


a. User name: Enter your College username in the following format:
[username]@college.tcd.ie e.g. jbloggs@college.tcd.ie
b. Password: Enter your network login password

Configuring Windows 7 and Windows Vista


1. Read any documentation the remote site has relating to eduroam
2. Open Network and Sharing Centre and click Manage Wireless Networks

3. From the Manage Wireless Networks window select Add and Manually create a network
profile
4. Enter the following details:
a. Network name: eduroam (case sensitive)
b. Security type: [configure as per institution you are visiting]
c. Encryption type: [configure as per institution you are visiting]
d. Tick Connect even if the network is not broadcasting
e. Click Next

7. Select Change connection settings and then choose the Security tab on the Wireless
Network properties window.

8. Ensure the network authentication method is set to Protected EAP (PEAP) and then click
Settings

9. Configure the Protected EAP Properties window as follows:


a

Untick the Validate server certificate box

For Authentication Method choose Secured password (EAPMSCHAP v2)

Tick Enable Fast Reconnect

Select Configure

7. On the EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties window untick the box beside Automatically use my
windows login name and click OK

8. Close all open windows.


9. If you are not automatically prompted with a network authentication window, click on the
network icon in the system tray, select the eduroam network and click Connect
10. Enter the following details:
a. User name: Enter your College username in the following format:
username@college.tcd.ie
b. Password: Enter your network login password

Configuring Windows XP
1. Read any documentation the remote site has relating to eduroam
2. Click on Start - Connect To - Show All Connections, right click on Wireless Network
Connection and select Properties

3. On the Wireless Network Connection Properties window:


a. Select the Wireless Networks tab
b. Tick the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings box
c. Click Add

4. On the Association tab, configure as follows:


a. Network name (SSID): eduroam (case sensitive)
b. Tick Connect even if this network is not broadcasting
c. Network Authentication: [as per institution you are visiting]
d. Data encryption: [as per institution you are visiting]
e. Click OK

5. Select the Authentication tab and configure as follows:


a. Tick Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network
b. EAP type: Protected EAP (PEAP)
c. Untick all remaining boxes
d. Select the Properties button

6. On the Projected EAP Properties window, configure as follows:

Untick Validate server certificate


Authentication Method: Secured password (EAPMSCHAP v2)
Tick Enable Fast Reconnect
Select the Configure button

7. On the EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties window untick the box beside Automatically use my
windows login name and click OK
8. Click OK on all open windows
9. You should eventually see a message below stating that you need to supply credentials for
connection to eduroam network. Click on this message
10. Enter the following details:
a. User name: Enter your College username in the following format:
username@college.tcd.ie
b. Password: Enter your network login password

Configuring OS X
1. Read any documentation the remote site has relating to eduroam.
2. Click on the Airport / Wifi Icon and choose 'Join other network' and configure as follows:
a. Network Name: eduroam (case sensitive)
b. Security: [as per institution you are visiting]
c. Username: username@college.tcd.ie
d. Password: Your TCD network login password
e. Tick the Remember this network check box.

3. Click Join. You may get a series of prompts as follows:


a. If you get a message referring to 802.1X Authentication enter your username and
password and click OK
b. You may get a further prompt to 'Verify Certificate' choose to 'Show Certificate' and
check the box beside 'Always trust "eduroam"' before clicking Continue

Configuring Mobile Devices*


*Please note that ISS does not provide support for mobile devices beyond provision of the

Open Settings
Click on the Wi-Fi icon to bring up the Wi-Fi Connection Pane
Select Other and enter the following settings:
a.
Name: eduroam (case sensitive)
b.
Security: [as per institution you are visiting]

Click join
Accept any certificate related messages

Configuring Android

Tap the Menu button on your handset and select System Settings/ Settings.
Under Wireless and Networks select Wi-Fi/ Wi-Fi Settings
Select eduroam and enter the following settings
a.
EAP method PEAP
b.
Phase 2 Authentication MSCHAPV2

CA Certificate Unspecified
d.
User Certificate Unspecified
e.
Identity username@college.tcd.ie
f.
Anonymous Identity Leave this blank
g.
Password Your password for your University account
Select connect.

Configuring Windows Phone Devices

On Start, flick left to the App list, and then tap Settings icon > Wi-Fi. Make sure that
Wi-Fi networking is set to On.
Tap on eduroam network and enter your college credentials in the form:
User Name: username@college.tcd.ie
Password: Your password

* If you receive a connection unsuccessful message at this point, please see below for
manual connection steps.

Tap done. You may receive the following security warning:


If you expect to find eduroam in this location, go ahead and connect. Otherwise, it
may be a different network with the same name.
Tap yes. You should now be connected to eduroam.

* If you receive a connection unsuccessful message, you will need to add the network
manually. In order to do that:
In Wi-Fi settings menu tap advanced
Type in the network name eduroam (case sensitive) and tap add.
Sign in with your credentials in the form outlined above and tap done.
You should now be connected to the eduroam.

Removal of eduroam Network Configuration Settings.


In the case you are no longer planning to connect to eduroam, you should remove eduroam
network configuration settings. You are recommended to do this as otherwise you may experience
unwanted wireless access, device performance issues, or decrease your user account security. Below
are instructions for removal of eduroam network configuration settings.

Windows 8
1. Go to the desktop, click on the network icon near the clock on the bottom right hand
corner of the task bar
2. In the pop up list, right click on the eduroam network and choose Forget this network

Windows 7 and Vista


1. Click Start, Control Panel, Network and Sharing Center, Manage Wireless networks
2. Highlight eduroam in Networks you can view and modify and click on Remove.

XP
1. Click Start, Connect To, Show All Connections
2. Right Click on Wireless Network Connection and select Properties
3. The Wireless Network Connection Properties window should have three tabs at the top.
NOTE: If the wireless Networks tab is missing then it is most likely that your wireless card
has its own utility which you use to configure the card. Click Start, Control Panel and
look for an icon that may refer to wireless. If you cant find such a utility, see if there is
one under All Programs on the Start menu.
4. Click on the Wireless Networks tab
5. Highlight eduroam in Preferred Networks and click on Remove.

OS X

Click the Wifi Networks icon / Airport located in the upper right corner of the task bar
Select Open Network Preferences
Select Wifi in the left hand pane
Select Advanced in the lower right corner
Select the eduroam network
Click the - icon to remove this network

iOS

Open Settings
Click the Wi-Fi icon to bring up the Wi-Fi Connection Pane
Tap the arrow icon next to eduroam network
Tap the option on the screen which says Forget this network
Confirm to delete eduroam Wi-Fi network settings

Long press eduroam network
Tap forget Network

Windows Phone

On Start, flick left to the App list, and then tap Settings icon > Wi-Fi. Make sure that WiFi networking is set to On Toggle control icon
Long tap eduroam network
Tap delete to remove network
